[Top 10] D&D Best Utility Magic Items That Are Excellent

Deep troubles

Magic swords, cursed chalices, and eldritch tome of unbound knowledge are staples of fantasy: Powerful artifacts that empower the heroes (or villains) that carry them through terrible odds.

Dungeons & Dragonsares no exception, since the beginning adventurers far and wide have braved the most dangerous dungeons to claim the most powerful loot.

In the 5th edition, however, wondrous items are an optional rule, so if you’re new to the game or haven’t come across one before, it can be challenging to make the most out of the fantastical loot you can come across.

While enchanted weapons and empowered armors have value, the mechanics surrounding them are static, either increasing to-hit, damage, or defensive values.

Some items, however, are much vaguer or utilitarian, allowing for creative solutions that can lead to the most memorable moments in a campaign!

Hop onto our cart and help us escape, for we’ll talk about the best utility magic items in 5th edition Dungeons & Dragons before said dragons find its hoard to be missing.

10. Alchemy Jug.

Have you ever needed something very specific? Fret no more for it will be yours…if it’s a liquid.

An Alchemy Jug lets you name one liquid from its list to cause the jug to produce the chosen liquid.

From poison to mayonnaise, you can get in and out of trouble with this wacky, creative item.

What Is Great About the Alchemy Jug:

  • Unexpected solutions. With this item, your party can make the most out of their creativeness to come up with ways to bypass obstacles. Perhaps using the BBEG’s lactose intolerance against them?
  • Survival. From dry desserts to a volcano’s womb, sometimes dehydration can be as much of an enemy as a dragon. With the Alchemy Jug, you can make survival viable almost anywhere.

9. Bag of Holding.

Encumbrance, carry weight, leaving loot behind because you only have a sack, never worry about that again with this fashion sensible bag.

A bag of holding can hold up to 500 pounds as it stores them in an extradimensional pocket within it, letting you and your party members carry all the treasure back home.

What Is Great About the Bag of Holding:

  • First of all, it simplifies things. Usually, dealing with loads of loot and inventory management implies a lot of paperwork that most groups either ignore or dread doing. With one of these, you can compromise between inventory management and fun.
  • A bag of holding has up to 10 minutes of air within it, making it so you can engage in some serious shenanigans. Spirit away a hostage without being seen? Carry weapons into the king's chamber? You decide.

8. Stone of Good Luck.

As the name implies, this perfectly polished rock is a handy tool that makes sure you always have a chance at success.

While attuned to it, you gain a +1 bonus to ability checks and saving throws.

What Is Great About a Luck stone:

  • Ability checks are one of the most common reasons to roll dice in the 5th edition, and sometimes they are so important that they can influence the whole campaign. Increasing your chances of succeeding is always great.
  • From spells to diseases, saving throws measure your chances of surviving them, if you want your character to have a long and prosperous career, then you need to bump them as high as you can.

7. Cloak of the Manta Ray.

Being out of your element can be a treacherous ordeal: Let’s make it simple.

The cloak of the manta ray grants you water breathing as well as a swimming speed, this is perfect for nautical campaigns, underwater voyages, and particularly pesky, convoluted temples….

What Is Great About the Cloak of the Manta Ray:

  • Suffocation rules are no joke. You can go from being perfectly healthy to death’s door if you’re not careful underwater. This lets you alleviate the danger.
  • Fighting underwater is a constant disadvantage, getting a swimming speed lets you bypass its obstacles.
  • It doesn’t take an attunement slot!

6. Decanter of Endless Water.

Water is a volatile and versatile element that can be used for destruction as much as utility.

A decanter of endless water pours varying quantities of water depending on your choice.

From a calm stream of clean water to an erupting geyser that swallows all in its path, you can clear whole spaces with a single use of this item.

What Is Great About the Decanter of Endless Water:

  • From bringing allies to the brink of dehydration to public spectacles, you can use water for almost anything!
  • Depending on how you use it, you can know or push objects weighing no more than 200 pounds, useful for getting across traps.

5. Driftglobe.

Light and visibility are an essential part of an adventurer’s job.

“But I have darkvision!” some might say, and yes, but only up to 60 feet and in scales of grey.

A drift globe is a small sphere that can emanate the light or daylight spell. Additionally, you can cause it to hover in the air.

Not only is it hands-free, but it can also emulate a 3rd level spell to great effect.

What Is Great About the Driftglobe.

  • Unlike light, it does not take up concentration.
  • It’s a hands-free light source.
  • Color-based puzzles, enemies standing too far, and supernatural darkness are all things darkvision does not help with. With the daylight spell, you can counter darkness made by a third-level spell or lower.

4. Helm of Comprehending Languages.

To no one’s surprise, this helm allows the wearer to cast the comprehend languages spell.

Fantasy worlds are vast, and so are their inhabitants. It’s impossible for a single player to know all the languages and dialects there are, this can be detrimental in role play escenarios.

What Is Great about the Helm of Comprehending Languages.

  • It does not require attunement.
  • The comprehend languages spell works with letters too, so you’ll never be left out of a conversation or an important fact.

3. Immoveable rod.

When it comes to creative solutions, few items can compare to the Immoveable rod.

Not only can it hold up to 8000 pounds of weight, but it can also lock into any angle and position.

What Is Great About the Immoveable rod:

  • Anchoring vehicles, locking doors, ripping through a flying creature's body as it moves with it inside, it’s a very useful item when applies properly.

1. Winged Boots.

Tired of seeing your enemies fly away? Winged boots are the solution to your problem. These bad boys grant your paladin a flying speed equal to your walking speed for 4 hours, much longer than any combat normally lasts, and longer than the fly spell does.

What Is Great About Winged boots:

  • Most races lack verticality, and sadly, several classes' power kit grounds them, thus once your foe is out of reach, it is challenging to pursue.
  • Three-dimensional movement gives you another perspective when dealing with both enemies and obstacles. No longer will you worry about crossing chasms or dying to gravity!
