A moba with some base building mechanics

Starting off we are going to take a look at AirMech, an RTS game that you can play like a moba  if you want to. The story for this game is rather simple. The world has ended through a Great War, and you now fight to survive. Lost technology has been discovered and you are able to create the ultimate fighting air machines called AirMechs. So you’ve got to defeat your enemies and gather more AirMechs to either pillage or protect.

One of the awesome features in this game is that while you can play it as a moba, it still retains its RTS feeling. The army that you create will stand and fight with you and help you overwhelm your enemies.

Getting a stylish double-kill!

This PvP based multiplayer game takes place in an Apocalyptic world in which you have to group up with powerful allies and fight to survive. Imagine dropping a bunch of League champions into an arena and play a deathmatch with a third person camera perspective. That is essentially what this game is.

It is not a traditional moba in that there is a nexus or base to destroy. Instead there are three different game modes to play: Brawl, Domination, and Survival.

Stand as a mighty warrior against devilish foes

The world of Nosgoth has undergone hundreds of years of war that has left each race embittered and hateful against each other. Now there is war again, but this is the war for survival and supremacy. You can play as either the humans or the vampires to crush the opposition.

The game plays like a first person shooter only it feels more like an mmo world. This is not a traditional moba but it has lots of PvP elements and even some E-sports leagues that you can compete in.

7. Prime World

Primeworld has so many ways to customize your characters

Prime World is a game littered with micro transactions and energy mechanics. Don’t let that deter you from enjoying the fun gameplay though. It is a very traditional moba in which you choose your heroes and duke it out in different lanes on the battlefield. You can also customize your own heroes and their abilities.

While this game is pay to win, you can still enjoy it as a free user. The gameplay is very fun and the customization is unlike any other moba on the market.

Like most moba's, this one is also full of magic and exciting classes

6. Strife

The graphics are cartoony but very modern

Strife is a very new moba that understands many of the bad things about the industry, and they have taken strong steps towards fixing them. Some of the awesome features of this game include shared gold so that you progress as a team, customizable armories so that you can play the way you want, and out of combat regen so that you don’t have to go back to base all the time.

Additionally, this game has taken big steps to eliminate toxicity from the community, and that is a huge plus. It is also worth mentioning that this game has amazing graphics and looks fantastic!

Why would you not want to play this game?

If you love mobas and DC universe, than this is the game for you. There is no other game on the market with as big of a DC multiverse roster as this game. Think of a superhero, you can most likely find them in this action packed moba.

The game has several tutorial missions to acclimate you to the new world of Infinite Crisis. You take on the role of a superhero or villain champion as you try to shape the post-apocalyptic earth that they live on. The game has gained massively favorable reviews and is one of the most entertaining mobas out there.

Heroes of Newerth is rich in lore and exciting characters to play

Heroes of Newerth pits two opposing factions against each other in exciting and fast paced PvP combat. The Legion has to guard their world tree while attempting an assault the Hellbourne Sacrificial shrine, and of course it is the goal of the Hellbourne to burn the world tree.

This game shares a lot with League of Legends but has a steeper learning curve. The game is not as easy to play and get into as League is and can therefore deter some players. If you are accustomed to Mobas though, this should not be an issue for you.

3. Smite

Take on the role as one of the mighty Gods from ancient mythologies and duke it out in exciting arena battles. Smite is a very unique moba in the sense that it is played from a third person camera point of view.

Most Mobas has the camera looking at your character from a top down perspective to give you maximum vision. Smite throws all of that out the window and makes the game much more exciting. When you can’t see behind you, it becomes more difficult to gank and keep track of the opposing Gods. Other than that though, Smite is very traditional in how mobas work.

2. Heroes of the Storm

Arthas vs Diablo, now that's a matchup we're dying to see!

Blizzard decided to take all of their most famous video game characters and throw them in a blender. This created the masterpiece that is Heroes of the Storm!

In this game you can play your favorite Starcraft, Warcraft, or Diablo hero and battle on several different maps. Blizzard focused heavily on map objectives as all of the maps contain important points and mechanics that need to be fulfilled. One map has a ship that will shoot several barrages at your opponents structures if you get it enough gold. Another map has you morph into a massive siege plant golem if you can gather enough seeds.

These mechanics move away from the traditional moba structure and allows for diverse and fun gameplay. That and also the fact that you can play your favorite childhood game heroes is pretty awesome! Imagine what it would be like if you could take control of Baron and assault the enemy base in League. That is what you can do in Heroes of the Storm.

1. Dota 2

The historical king of mobas

Dota was the game that started it all. The moba genre was made popular and entered mainstream gaming almost singlehandedly through this game. It was originally created as a mod to Warcraft III that allowed you to play Warcraft heroes in a moba style arena. It has since evolved and the sequel was released not long ago.

The sequel improved on many things from the first version, but it is still the same game at its core. The graphics and feel of the game remain similar to what the original was, and you can’t help but feel a nostalgic pull to pick up Warcraft III whilst playing it.

Some of the major differences from League of Legends is that all heroes are free from the start, there are more complicated mechanics like killing your own creep to deny the opponent farm, night and day cycles that affect certain hero’s abilities, and the meta is much more flexible allowing for different styles of play.

While it is not the most popular moba on the market, it has by far the largest prize pool in any gaming competition worldwide. If you are interested in serious competitive gaming then give Dota 2 a go.
