15. Kingdom Come: Deliverance

Kingdom Come: Deliverance Gameplay

In this game, you play the role of Henry, a young man whose family and hometown are slaughtered by invaders, prompting you to go on a quest to get strong enough in order to avenge them.

In order improve your fighting skills, you must train with NPCs in spars where swords clash, fight the Hungarian invaders, learn the right time to shoot someone with a bow, stab them with a dagger, or slash them with a sword, and repeat in order to gain new skills and perks.

There is also a fluid storyline with real life consequences for Henry and the world around him for you to do during your downtime from fighting. Just be careful not to accidentally strike any of your allies while showing off your skills or you’re in for a beating.

He’ll never see it coming…

The combat is up close and personal…very up close.

14. Valhall

Valhall Gameplay

If you ever wanted to have a battle royale with hundreds of other dead Vikings over Odin’s sword in order to prevent the end of the world, then this game is for you.

Arm yourself with the best and strongest blades, perhaps a sturdy shield and some good armor, and get down in the nitty gritty of the battle as the map slowly crumbles away, forcing everyone to engage in combat, so no one can win by just avoiding everyone.

If first person view is a bit to close and confusing for you, there is also the option to view the battle from a third person view in order to view your surroundings a bit better. Only you can stop the Ragnarök that is approaching.

That would be my reaction if someone approached me with a sword too.

The calm before the battle.

13. Mortal Online

Mortal Online Gameplay

If battle royales or playing av pre-made character doesn’t suit you, give this game where you can pick your own race, profession, and build your own house a try.

The combat is varied, from jousting on top of mounts, to head-shotting your enemies with arrows, to the traditional chop them into little pieces method with your sword. And if you get tired of slaying other players and NPCs, you can invest your time in things like magic, woodcutting, book publishing, customizing your armor, plus several more activities.

Just don’t die, or you will lose all of your hard-earned loot.

Little town, it’s a quiet village…

Little town, with its…little people.

It’s not about the rewards, but the fight itself.

Sword beats sword apparently.

Retreating is a perfectly acceptable strategy.

11. Vermintide 2

Hellraid Gameplay

The world is being invaded by demons, and it is up to you, a master demon slayer, to stop them. If going at it alone seems a bit boring, then you can also invite some friends to come along with you to share in all the delicious fighting, no matter which one of the three modes you choose to play. Choose whichever fighting style suits you best, up close with a heavy sword and personal or ranged attacks with fireballs or throwing knives.

The main objective is to slay as many demons as you can and not die, so have fun.

Burn it with fire!

Dude, at least wear a shirt. I can see your innards!

Bannerman Gameplay

In this game, you take on the role of a swordsman who, after a massive battle, was left for dead and your only quest  is to go regain your lord’s banner which has been stolen.

You can’t hack and slash your way through this game. You have to carefully time your cut attacks, dodges, punches, and bashes and choose which engagements you want to partake in order not to get a game order.

This is not a noble quest you are going on this time. Enjoy the brutality of war.

This ain’t Robin Hood and Little John.

Now it’s your turn to take an arrow to the knee.

8. GORN

GORN gameplay

Going into the VR realm, GORN is a bloody, no-holds barred combat game where the only goal is to beat your opponent into a messy pulp.

Go barehanded, use giant maces, throw knives, or crush your enemies’ skulls with war hammers. There is no limit to the amount of carnage and mess you can create other than your own imagination and creativity.

Have fun with this stress reliever of a game.

I’d hate to be the one that has to clean this mess up.

I don’t think skin works that way.

7. Gladio

Gladio gameplay

Despite its name, Gladio is a gladiator simulator, not a game about the Final Fantasy XV character.

There are no fancy graphics in this game, just simple ragdoll opponents that you can slice into bloody little pieces with your sword.

You can set how your opponents act, depending on the type of armor they are wearing and the environment takes on damage the longer the fight drags on. Just make sure you aren’t the one getting chopped to bits.

The sparks are certainly flying.

Flawless Victory!

6. Mount & Blade: Warband

Mount & Blade: Warband gameplay

There’s nothing quite as satisfying as gathering troops and fighting other factions in order to become a ruler of a war-torn country.

On this battlefield, you aren’t limited to the weapons you own, for you can pick up any projectile and chunk it at your enemy to hopefully take off their head.

Or you can go the old-fashioned way and just stab them with your sword. Or you can run them through with a javelin. It’s your choice.

I think this ramp may be a bit crowded.

Don’t fire until you see the white of their eyes!

5. Mount & Blade: Bannerlord 2

Mount & Blade: Bannerlord 2 gameplay

In the sequel/prequel to Warband, your aim is to take over an empire torn apart by civil war and establish your own empire.

Siege cities with massive  engines, tear cities apart from the inside through a network of criminal activities, charge up to ramparts with your sword, or ram the gate open.

You can also slash opponents your enemy’s sword after you’ve slain them for extra irony. And if that is a bit too barbaric for you, there’s only diplomatic options that impact the whole world from peace treaties to treason pacts.

The future of Calradia is in your hands…

I think you’re going to need more people.

Such a stalwart figure…

4. Gloria Victis

Gloria Victis gameplay

In Gloria Victis, it’s all about using tactics in order to beat your opponents in order togain territory to build your towns and castles on.

And if you get tired of fighting, there’s other career options like huntsman or blacksmith.

The land is yours for the taking if you really want it.

Sometimes a family is three knights and two bears.

I think this hold up went very wrong.

If you wanted to ever live in the medieval era without risk of catching the Plague, this game is for you.

It’s like baseball, just without the ball, and trying to chop the opponent in half.
