The Game Awards 2018 presented us with a few incredible live performances, clever jokes and more importantly, several game announcements to look forward to. On top of those, was the reveal of The Outer Worlds, a game by the creators of the original Fallout games developed by Obsidian Entertainment.

If that is not enough to hype you dear friend, I sincerely don’t know what will. And if you are hyped and waiting for the game yet unnanounced relase date, I’ve put up a list of games similar to The Outer Worlds for you to play, be it either visually, gameplay wise or thematically.

10. Fallout: New Vegas

We can’t talk about games similar to The Outer Worlds without mentioning Fallout: New Vegas. Often regarded as the best Fallout game available AND also developed by Obsidian Entertainment (the developers of The Outer Worlds), Fallout: New Vegas is set in 2281, in a reimagined Las Vegas devastated hundreds of years before by the nuclear war that happened in every Fallout game, and you play as the Courier, a character that was ambushed while delivering a package and nearly killed. Having survived the ambush, you embark on a quest to discover who was your almost-killer and try to understand his motivations.

If you’re not very good at being accurate while shooting, Fallout has the VATS system, that help you shoot specific body parts of enemies. You might still have a 5% chance of missing though.

Also, you get to gaze at the beautiful wonders of the radioactive Mojave Desert and it’s uniquely surreal works of art. Wait... That’s not art, is it?

9. Anthem

This Is Anthem – Gameplay Series

Anthem is a third-person shooter and action RPG set in a "contiguous open world" shared with up to three other players in which they take the role of a Freelancer donning exosuits called Javelins. The suits can be customized to give the player have unique weapons and superhuman abilities to use against several different kinds of enemies. Think Destiny + Iron Man. The game will release soon this year, ant the open Beta will be available in February.

With four different classes to choose from, Ranger, Colossus, Storm and Interceptor, Anthem can surely fit to your preferred playstyle.

And we get to fight giant menacing monsters with friends, so it seems to be a win-win.

8. No Man's Sky

No Man’s Sky is an indie action-adventure survival game that allows you to explore the universe. You will need to focus on four different aspects of the game, those being exploration, survival, combat, and trading. The Universe is procedurally generated and completely open, with over 18 quintillion planets to explore and you can go anywhere, alone or with friends as long as you have the resources. Each planet has it’s own flora, fauna and major resources, and you can build your base, trade ships and follow quests. It’s great if you enjoy survival games and exploration games.

As soon as you fix your ships components, you can takeoff and explore the universe, and man, this game has nice visuals.

In the game’s most recente update, you’ll be able to build your bases underwater, if you don’t want those pesky Sentinels bothering you.

7. Mass Effect 2

Sequel to the critically acclaimed game by Bioware, Mass Effect 2 takes place within the Milky Way galaxy during the 22nd century, and follows the footsteps of Commander Shepard, as he discovers The Collectors, a threat bigger than Sovereign from the first game. Each choice in the game affects the final outcome of the game’s much praised Suicide Mission. Playing the game after having played the first one is more advisable, as it gives a more in depth understanding of the game’s universe and choices.

Mass Effect 2 gives you several side quests and objectives to do, and depending on your choices on those missions (or the choices to even do the missions), they will drastically change the end result of the game. So choose wisely.

And you thought a kilometer long living ship with destructive goals was bad enough, eh Shepard... Wait till you meet the Collectors.

6. Star Citizen

Star Citizen is a multiplayer combat and trading game, set in a vast sprawling universe. Some would argue that the game is the more realist cousin of No Man’s Sky, and this definition is not that far from being true. In development for more time than anyone can remember, the game has not been officially released, but several modules are already available for you to play. A story-focused component of the game with a stellar cast is also set to be released under the name of Squadron 42.

With incredibly stunning and near-impossible visuals and mechanics, Star Citizen can be considered one of the most ambitious games ever made, with some in-game products such as ships being as expensive as a car.

And of course, any space game worthy of attention also has fully populated cities. After all, you can’t be a Star Citizen with no cities to live in.

5. Atomic Heart

So, this is the weird entry in this list. Atomic Heart is what would happen if Bioshock and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. had a baby and that baby was high on acid and steroids. The game is an adventure first-person shooter, set in an alternate universe in the Soviet Union. You play as special agent P-3, who was sent to a highly secret object called enterprise "3826" by the Soviet government after it went radio silent. The game has a mix of sci-fi and horror and has one of the most unique and impressively creepy visuals to date.

The good thing about videogames is that you can walk into abandoned Soviet hospitals with zombie-ish ghouls without fearing for your life. I can’t guarantee your sanity though.

I have a lot of questions to ask about this. What is this weapon I’m holding? What happened to the man in the tub? Why are the nurses dead but wearing gas masks? Why is the ceiling melting?

4. Metro Exodus

Sequel to the cult classics Metro 2033 and Metro - Last Light, Exodus is set in 2036, two years after the events of the previous game, on a post-apocalyptic Earth that has been devastated by a nuclear war 23 years ago. The player takes the role of Artyom who flees the Metro in Moscow and is now on a continent-spanning journey to the far east. Fighting against the Russian nuclear winter, mutated creatures and bloodthirsty soldiers, Metro Exodus is an action packed game set to be released later this year.

Different from the previous games, Metro Exodus features much more outdoors environments, different from the othen claustrophobic metro tunnels from the last entries.

But what didn’t change is the amount of creepily mutated creatures you will face throughout the game.

3. Rage 2

Sequel to the ‘failed’ Rage, this game takes place 30 years after the original. Players assume the role of the last ranger, Walker, who must survive in a harsh environment after the majority of mankind passed away when the planet was hit by an asteroid, and is now inhabited by dangerous mutants. Altough there are settlements and different factions, the authorities declared themselves as the new military power and are looking for lost nano technology to rise to power in this dead wasteland.

More colorful than its predecessor, Rage 2 seems to take itself less serious this time. The game features several weapons and vehicular combat similar to the Mad Max game.

The game is set to have several new and returning characters, so we can look forward to having a lot of fun in this new, yet familiar world.

2. Borderlands

Borderlands focuses on a group of four "Vault Hunters", who travel to the planet Pandora to find an alien vault, rumoured to contain advanced alien technology, while battling the local fauna and bandit population, but ultimately attempting to stop the head of a private corporation army from reaching the vault for his own evil schemes. Praised for its visuals and gameplay, Borderlands and its sequels are quite fun games if you’re looking for an action RPG.

Borderlands cartonish visuals became a big trademark for the series, and several fans even managed to cosplay faithfully with this look.

The game has a procedurally generated loot system, where each weapon found is randomly created, and no gameplay is like the last.

1. Cyberpunk 2077

Announced in 2012, Cyberpunk 2077 is likely one of the most hyped games of the last 10 years. Developed by The Witcher’s CD Projekt Red, the game is based on the tabletop RPG Cyberpunk 2020, and it’s set 57 years after the events of the game. It takes place in the dystopian city of Night City, California, and the player assumes the role of V, a mercenary who can upgrade him/herself through cybernetic enhancements. Influenced by great cyberpunk works like Blade Runner, Ghost In The Shell, System Shock and Deus Ex, Cyberpunk is definetly a must play.

In Cyberpunk 2077 we will face several foes, each more cyberpunk-ish than the last.

The game’s world, Night City, appears to be a fully fledged city, as big as real cities can be. Honestly, every aspect of this game seems way too perfect to be true.
