Top 10 Steins;Gate Best Moments Worth Watching Again

Steins gate, Kurisu, Okabe

What are some of the best moments in Steins;Gate?

Steins;Gate is a great anime about romance, friendship, and time travel. It’s easy to get caught up in the drama of it all and overlook some of the smaller scenes, even though they might be some of the best. So I’ve put together a list of the best Steins;Gate moments you should definitely watch again.

10. Maho’s introduction in Steins;Gate 0

Maho gets mistaken for a child by Okabe.

What’s great about this scene:

- Its inherent humor brightens up the start to a new season that frequently touches on despair. In this worldline, in which Okabe failed to save Kurisu, he is often depressed, but after meeting Maho (and later learning about her connection to Kurisu) he begins to heal from his grief.

9. Okabe introduces Ruka… as a guy

What’s great about this scene:

- It’s hilarious, and it seems to get funnier each time you watch it. What a great introduction to Ruka’s character and major dilemma!

8. Kurisu and Okabe meet for the first time

Kurisu and Okabe first stumble into each other.

What’s great about this scene:

- The true significance of this scene slips by anyone who’s watching it for the first time--but for anyone who’s finished the series and is now rewatching the first episode, Kurisu’s question of “what were you talking about earlier?” gains much greater significance to the audience. From her point of view, she has already met future Okabe who is seriously attempting to save her life, and then minutes later comes in contact with his earlier, jovial “mad scientist” self. Her confusion makes a lot more sense!

7. The Divergence Meter reveal

Suzuha explains the Divergence Meter to Kurisu and Okabe.

What’s great about this scene:

- It’s a great explanation for the audience, as well as for the characters--especially for a show that can get as complicated as this one, Suzuha’s breakdown of alternate timelines makes things a lot more clear.

6. Alternate future Ruka

Ruka's tragic future.

In Steins;Gate 0, when Okabe wakes up in the desolate future, his friends have all changed drastically. But one of the most impressive changes is the one Ruka seems to have gone through--he fights and kills their enemies with graceful ease, and directly afterward dies tragically from the battle.

What’s great about this scene:

- Ruka’s transformed look is really awesome to see, and even better to watch again. He looks incredible with his new clothes, swords, and long hair, and his elegant fighting style is a pleasure to watch.

- His subsequent death is one of the reasons Okabe resolves to fix his distorted timeline and save his friends from this reality.

5. The many phone calls

Okabe calls Kurisu.

In the midst of Okabe and the rest of the Lab’s mission to time travel, Okabe wants Faris to send a text into the past. He calls Kurisu and demands that she use the “phonewave” to send it, but she hangs up on him. And again. And again, until he speaks politely to her.

What’s great about this scene:

- The relationship dynamic between Okabe and Kurisu really shines here--her hanging up on him, breaking through his attitude of selfish rudeness, brings him down to a humbler place.

- It’s very funny to watch, and it’s one of those humorous scenes with great comedic timing that breaks up what otherwise is  a very serious anime.

4. Chicken tenders

The chicken tenders arrive.

Mayuri brings back chicken tenders to the Lab, meets Kurisu, and the gang figures out how to send D-Mails.

What’s great about this scene:

- Time travel is achieved! The Lab succeeds in sending a D-Mail text, and their journey into the complex, mind-bending world of time travel really sets off.

- Mayuri’s chicken tender song, sung as she skips up the stairs, is one of the most iconic pieces of dialogue in the whole show. “When you’re on a chicken bender, grab a box of chicken tenders!”

3. Kurisu gets a lab coat

Kurisu tries on a lab coat.

Kurisu tries on one of Okabe’s lab coats and he apparently starts to fall in love.

What’s great about this scene:

- It shows how, at least in this one aspect of lab coats, Okabe and Kurisu are really suited to one another--they both feel most comfortable when wearing them, unlike any other Lab member.

- The pose in which Kurisu and Okabe stand back-to-back in their lab coats is truly iconic.

2. Kurisu and Okabe reunite

The heartfelt renunion.

At the end of the last episode of Steins;Gate, Okabe manages to reach Stein’s Gate, saving both Kurisu and Mayuri. In this corrected timeline, he is the only one who remembers what has happened to all of them in other timelines.

What’s great about this scene:

- This is truly the most emotionally satisfying ending Steins;Gate could have gone with. Not only does Okabe walk through the streets alone, thinking of Kurisu and hoping she’s happy, but he’s not even worried about his own happiness. He’s just glad she’s alive. That is a genuine example of altruistic love.

- Kurisu, on the other hand, doesn’t remember Okabe at first. Her memories come back to her as he calls her “Christina,” his nickname for her. They don’t have to start back at the beginning. Even after all they’ve both been through, they get  their happy ending.

1. Kurisu and Okabe kiss

A romantic moment between Okabe and Kurisu.

In this especially memorable scene, Kurisu and Okabe confess their love to each other and finally kiss.

What’s great about this scene:

- The satisfying, yet heart-wrenching moment of the kiss and their mutual confession of love makes this scene perfect. Although Kurisu has just offered her own life in exchange for Mayuri’s, and she and Okabe now know that this is goodbye, they still take the time to realize and admit their feelings for each other.

- Kurisu is selflessly sacrificing her own life to ensure Okabe is happy, and Okabe is crushed by the realization that she will no longer exist in his timeline. Now that’s love.
