The spirit box is a default item in phasmophobia and will automatically be included in your loadout for each investigation you go on. It’s used for the collection of spirit box evidence which is an evidence piece for identifying nearly half of the ghosts; Spirit, Wraith, Phantom, Poltergeist, Mare, Yokai, Moroi, Onryo, Deogen, The Twins, and The Mimic.
Using the spirit box
Add it to your inventory from the van, and flip it on with your ‘primary use’ button.
The lights near the ghost must be turned off in order for the ghost to respond.
If your voice recognition is on, press your push to talk button to ask the ghost a question.
Alternatively, you can switch your voice recognition mode to ‘Text’ in the settings to be prompted 3 questions when using the item (click one of the questions to ask it to the ghost).
You can ask; “Where are you?,” “Are you friendly?", or “How old are you?” Be warned, speaking to the ghost may anger it and cause some unwanted ghost activity.
Tier 1
The tier 1 spirit box has a range of 3 meters, low audio quality, and a low response rate. When speaking to the ghost, pay attention to the LED bulbs. If a question is recognized by the game, the far right LED will blink red, and if you get a response it will blink white.
Tier 2
At a range of 4 meters, medium audio quality, and a medium response rate, the tier 2 spirit box is a significant improvement over the previous version. If the game recognizes a question, a small black ‘X’ will flash. If you get a response then the ghost icon will flash.
Tier 3
The tier 3 spirit box is vastly superior to its predecessors. It has 5 meters of range, high audio quality, and a high response rate. If the game recognizes an asked question, but no response is given, the LEDs will flash red. The LEDs will flash white if you get a response.
Tips and Tricks
When using the spirit box with your voice recognition in ‘Text’ mode, the ghost cannot identify you from your voice like it can with ‘Text’ mode off. This can be useful against the yokai.
The moroi and deogen ghosts cannot hide spirit box evidence unless evidence is set to 0.
If you hear the Moroi on the spirit box, it will place a curse on you, increasing your passive sanity drain. The curse can be cleansed with sanity restoration items.
The Deogen has a 33% chance to produce a unique spirit box response if you are within 1 meter of the ghost. It sounds like an aggressive and ghostly asthma attack.
From personal experience, the indicators on the tier 1 and 2 spirit boxes can sometimes be misleading. It would be best to hear the ghost audibly respond before marking spirit box evidence in your journal.
