Is Baldur's Gate 3 Worth It?

is Baldur's Gate 3 worth it
A good game's worth its weight in gold.

Games these days can cost quite a chunk of change, even those still in Early Access. Baldur’s Gate 3 currently retails for about $60 on Steam.

With that kind of price tag, is the game even worth it? I’d argue that yes, it is. Here are the top 10 reasons why BG3 is worth it.

10. A Peek Behind the Curtain

With a planned release in fall 2023, BG3 is still in Early Access. This gives players a unique chance to experience the game in its raw, unpolished state. They can also have a direct effect on the game’s development by providing vital feedback to the developers.

While I’d argue that this makes buying BG3 worth it, it’s understandable if others would rather wait for the full release. By then, all aspects of the game will be available to players for the same price as it is now.

9. Buy Now, Play Later

Even if players would rather not play BG3 in its unfinished state, buying it now is still beneficial. Larian Studios uses the money earned from Early Access purchases to improve the game. Buying now also means players will already have the game on their computer on launch day– less waiting time is always a plus.

It’s worth buying BG3 now, even in Early Access, as the price will remain the same and you will be supporting the game and developers.

8. Explore with Friends

BG3’s multiplayer mode means that players can explore Faerûn with friends. Up to 4 players can connect wirelessly, giving the game that classic D&D feel.

This social aspect of the game makes it worthwhile. Make memories with old friends or make new ones as you explore together.

7. An Exciting Story

BG3’s story begins with the player in a tight spot: trapped aboard a Mind Flayer ship with a deadly parasite embedded behind their eye. The hope for escape–and an eventual cure–is what drives the main adventure.

The high stakes and lurking danger faced by the player make BG3’s main storyline exciting. It’s definitely worth a playthrough, even without dipping your toes into any side content.

6. Unforgettable Characters

The companion characters in BG3 all have their own distinct personalities, backstories, and motivations. They add substance to the events of the story– as friends, foes, or something in between.

Larian Studios has a reputation for writing strong characters in their games, and BG3 is no exception. Even solitary gamers will meet someone who grows on them and improves their gaming experience.

5. Quests Galore

Players don’t have to worry about running out of things to do in BG3. There are a seemingly endless amount of quests to pass the time. Adventure favors the bold– seemingly unimportant sidequests can yield amazing treasures.

Despite still being in Early Access, BG3 still boasts a ton of playable content to explore and is well worth a buy.

4. Player Immersion

BG3’s character creation is rich with choice and extremely detailed. Plus, its class and race options are lifted straight from the D&D rulebook. The result is a truly immersive experience for all players.

Seasoned D&D players can make their characters come to life, while newbies can dip their toes into RPG character creation.

3. Choose Your Own Adventure

Choice lies at the heart of all RPG games. In BG3, every decision the player makes has an effect on the story– for better or for worse. Players can choose who to help, who to kill, and what path their party should take.

Even in Early Access, BG3 is filled with a plethora of unique quests and avenues the player can take, which makes it worth it in my opinion.

2. Dive Into Lore

The lore of BG3 comes from Larian’s interpretation of 5e D&D. It’s rich with amazing history, creatures, factions, and locations. Even non-D&D fans will find something to like.

The sheer complexity and attention to detail in BG3’s world make it worthwhile to explore.

1. An Engaging Combat System

Combat lies at the core of RPGs like BG3. The combat is turn-based and strategic. Players must consider the battleground carefully, and use a combination of abilities and spells to defeat their enemies.

The combat in BG3 is engaging and just plain fun, making it worth the buy.
