The Iguanodon is one of the best starter tames. You can quite literally run forever riding it. Its stamina doesn’t drain while in a quadrupedal stance, making it one of the best starter dinos to explore with. While in a bipedal stance, the Iguanodon can attack using his thumbs. This creature is also a decent berry and thatch gatherer, so you should consider taming one the next time you start fresh.

This creature is one of the most iconic Ark creatures. Everyone has heard of this guy, and that’s for good reasons of course. The Trike is a great beginner's game with lots of benefits. He is able to collect lots of berries and thatch (using its charging power), while also being a potent defensive mount, as it has nice amounts of health and damage, and a huge head plating that can defend you from front shots.

8. Paraceratherium

The Paraceratherium is a great middle-game tank which’s primary use would be raiding. You can put a platform on its back and build an impenetrable portable base that’s going to protect you while riding. It has huge amounts of health and decent damage, so you’re safe from wild dinos as well. There are better alternatives to this creature which you’ll find further on this list, but this one is the easiest out of the bunch to tame.

7. Castoroides

This little creature is not as harmless as you might expect. You can find these guys usually in lakes, ready to defend their dams. Why should you tame a beaver? Because it’s the best wood gatherer that you’ll find. Not only does it collect huge amounts of wood, but they also have a weight reduction of 50%, meaning that you will be able to carry unbelievable amounts in one go.

6. Woolly Rhino

The Rhino is in my opinion one of the most underrated dinos in the game. This creature’s sheer strength makes it one of the most dangerous in Ark. It’s so strong that you might want to consider taking it to boss fights. Not only does it have decent stamina and health, but also an amazing charging ability that causes huge amounts of damage to anything in its path. It’s speed while charging is immense, therefore being a great transportation dino as well. Oh, and did I mention you can’t be stopped by trees? You can just walk through them, without slowing down.

5. Doedicurus

This creature is great for collecting stone – a material which you’ll need abundantly throughout the whole game . It has an impressive weight reduction for stone that allows you to carry incredible amounts of it at once. It also has a second ability: you can roll around on him!

I’m sure you’ve all heard about the Ankylosaurus. This creature is a must for every small or big tribe. You can collect stone – just like the Doedicurus, but that’s not all: you can collect lots of metal, which is by far the most important material out of all. You will always need huge amounts of metal. You can even use it as a defensive mount because it has good amounts of health and damage

This dino is simply a great addition to your base tames. It’s a good berry gatherer that has three stances. You can fight, gather berries and be safe while this guy is around. Not only that, but it’s quite easy to be tamed and you can find it in any starter region.

This dino is a must for almost everyone that gets to middle or late game. Not only is this creature the best berry gatherer that you can find, but it’s also great for raiding. Its ability to tank huge amounts of bullets from turrets, combined with the fact that you can build a safe house on its back and the amount of health that it has makes this the best defensive dino there is.

The Theri is basically the best all-rounder dino that you’ll find. It’s a very dangerous battle mount (it can even defeat T-Rexes sometimes) with huge amounts of damage, health, stamina, and speed. It can collect big amounts of wood and fiber (with its secondary attack). With its third attack, you can harvest berries. There’s nothing this dino can’t do, so I advise you to get to taming.
