What is Marvel's Avengers?
10. A multiplayer game for Marvel fans
With excellent Marvel games such as Insomniac’s Spider-Man and Eidos-Montréal’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Crystal Dynamics Avengers is the only triple AAA multiplayer game on the market with the Marvel IP.
While it may struggle with proper content and updates, Avengers is still a great game at heart.
9. Loot-based gameplay
Fans of games such as Destiny and Borderlands will be familiar with the gameplay loop. Collect gear and put it on your character until you find better gear. Marvel’s Avengers gameplay loop is similar to that, and oftentimes can be satisfying.
8. Live service game
Marvel’s Avengers is a live service game. When the news broke out about the genre the game is heading, fans were skeptical on how it can work. Most were expecting an experience similar to Insomniac’s Spider-Man.
Crystal Dynamics is admittedly struggling to push out content like other games. The last major content that was released for Avengers was the Discordant Sound raid, and that was 6 months ago. Despite the word of mouth surrounding the game, Marvel’s Avengers continues to be supported.
7. Play as different Avengers
What brawler game lets you play as Captain America or Black Widow with satisfying combat? While Avengers may stumble in other areas, combat is where Avengers shine the most, and playing as the different Avengers is the highlight of the game.
6. Content drops are slow
As mentioned before, content and updates are very slow. Spider-Man and the Discordant Sound raid were released 6 months prior in December 2021, and the War for Wakanda expansion was released 4 months before that in August 2021.
Some can say that it is a lack of direction that is causing the game to receive very slow updates, and that can be clearly seen in the game.
5. MCU Synergy
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is responsible for the popularity Marvel has accumulated today. In fact, it’s what helps most Marvel games from succeeding. Marvel games in recent years have noticeably taken inspiration from the MCU, and who can blame them? Incorporating elements from the MCU into their games guarantees sales.
Avengers is no different. The game takes elements from both the comics and the movies, while still retaining an original identity. The game has also recently coincided their skin release with the Ms. Marvel and Hawkeye shows. With Thor Love and Thunder coming soon, you can expect something for Thor and Jane Foster.
4. Continued support
As stated before, Marvel’s Avengers continues to be supported. Some may say that the game is not good enough to deserve support, and that is fine. However, you should make your own opinion before casting judgment.
3. PC playerbase is low
A little warning for those planning on buying the game, the PC playerbase is low. It can take 30 minutes for you to get a match, sometimes longer. It is advisable to buy the game on consoles, as the playerbase on both PlayStation and Xbox is more active than PC.
2. Story is on par with the MCU
The quality on the story for Marvel’s Avengers is on par with MCU. Not on the level of Infinity War or Endgame, but on the level of Age of Ultron and 2012 Avengers. You can tell Crystal Dynamics is setting something up for Avengers, and they want to have their own Endgame moment, so characters are slowly coming in and stories are slowly unraveling before the climax.
1. Get the game on sale
While I may praise the quality of the game, I also recommend you to get the game on sale. It is a fun game, no doubt. But it might not be for everyone. So many people have been turned away from the game due to bad experience, and I hate for readers to buy this game for full price and regret it.
I personally love the game, but I also know that it’s not perfect. So do yourself a favor, get the game on sale. If you have Xbox Game Pass, even better! Try it out.
