What are the best shader packs for Minecraft 1.18?
I think we can all agree that of all the things Minecraft does spectacularly, establishing a realistic lighting engine isn’t one of them. That’s why so many of Minecraft’s passionate fans have created shader packs, which make the game beautiful beyond words. Seriously, some of these shader packs blow the real world out of the water. Just the other day I was building a beach hut in my survival world and the shaders immersed me so much that I got sand in my fingernails.
Here are the top 10 best shader packs for Minecraft 1.18. Whether you’re wanting realistic water, great lighting for a cinematic shot, or just a small upgrade to vanilla Minecraft, there’s a shader on this list for you.
10. Optifine
Optifine gives you a lot of control over your graphics
Now, Optifine might not be the most spectacular shader on this list, but boy is it an important one. Not only does Optifine provide an increase in frames over vanilla, but it is also required to allow you to run any of the other shaders on this list. This mod is truly one of the most useful ever created. And yes, it does qualify as a shader, since it provides certain small lighting changes.
What's Great About Optifine:
- Allows you to install other shaders
- Gives you a zoom function
- Provides FPS boost
9. Sildur’s Enhanced Default
It's the small things in life
See Sildur’s Enhanced Default in action
It actually hurts me to put this shader so low on the list because of how close it is to my heart. As someone who loves shaders that cleverly improve upon the vanilla feel of Minecraft without being obtrusive, I can say that this one is one of my favorites. Sildur’s Enhanced Default takes everything that you love about vanilla Minecraft and makes it infinitely better. Even if you really don’t like the idea of installing a shader, just give this bad boy a try and see how much better it makes vanilla look and feel.
What’s Great About Sildur’s Enhanced Default:
- Super easy on hardware as far as shaders go
- Doesn’t ruin that vanilla Minecraft feel
- Has a huge array of small tweaks that just feel right

8. Beyond Belief
Who needs a girlfriend when the water reflections are this pretty?
Beyond Belief’s brilliance lies in its subtlety. It doesn’t actually change Minecraft all that far from vanilla, but you’re constantly catching yourself saying, “Oh hey that’s cool!” Every time you round a corner, you see another little trick of the light or detail that makes you grateful you installed this shader. In addition, Beyond Belief’s work with rain and moisture really is, well, beyond belief.
What’s Great About Beyond Belief:
- Innumerable tweaks that just make sense
- Rain and moisture graphics to die for
- Great for players with lower-end hardware
7. Chocapic13 Shaders
It takes a committed cameraman to get that shot
See Chocapic13 Shaders in action
Chocapic13 Shaders is the first shader pack on this list that makes a major overhaul in how Minecraft looks and feels. Now, don’t go thinking that it’s the worst shader pack for people who like their game to look totally different. On the contrary, Chocapic13 Shaders makes so many changes that only someone who genuinely wants their world rocked will enjoy it. The extremes in lighting are downright breathtaking, so go ahead and install it if you want to step into another world.
What’s Great About Chocapic13 Shaders:
- Stunning lighting effects
- Never a dull moment
- Makes even mundane textures such as grass interesting
6. BSL Shaders
If you can build like this guy and run shaders you've won the day
Don’t get me wrong, every shader on this list looks absolutely spectacular. You could really just install one at random, and you’d still see a massive overhaul in how your gameplay looks. However, no other shader has quite the unique personality and, dare I say flavor, of BSL. BSL does not actually make any crazy changes like turning torch lights purple, but it still manages to craft a beautiful and memorable look unto its own.
What’s Great About BSL Shaders:
- Unique look and style
- Makes adventure maps feel like their own game
- Very easy on lower-end hardware
5. AstraLex Shader
You'll love this shader twice as much if you're a werewolf
AstraLex actually began as an offshoot of BSL, but has since grown to offer more customization and more dramatic lighting. It still has that unique BSL identity and remains light on graphics cards, though. If you love the look of BSL but want just a little more out of your shader pack, then AstraLex Shader is for you.
What’s Great About AstraLex Shader:
- Everything that’s great about BSL but better
- Fixes many common technical issues with shader packs
- Should run on any PC with ease
4. SEUS PTGI HRR 3
Fan-favorite for a reason
SEUS PTGI HRR 3 is, simply put, beautiful. It gets right what so many other shader packs ignore: shadows. Yeah, your other shader packs might have incredibly dramatic sunset shots, but do their shadows blend together in ways that make the real world jealous? I don’t think so. This pack has a long name that represents its long history, and it has been fine-tuned to brilliance. Every last detail is crafted perfectly, and it’s been designed to be playable on even lower-range computers.
What’s Great About SEUS PTGI HRR 3:
- Phenomenal in every area
- Best shadows in the game
- Relatively gentle on computer hardware
3. Apollo RT Shaders
Show off your money in and out of the game
See Apollo RT Shaders in action
Apollo RT possibly provides some of the most realistic lighting of any shader in Minecraft. Regardless of location, time of day, or level of light, you always feel like you’re somewhere between Minecraft and reality with Apollo RT. It is quite demanding on computer hardware, and it requires you to donate, but if you have the money it is absolutely worth it.
What’s Great About Apollo RT:
- Phenomenal lighting
- Looks good in every environment
- Perfect for cinematics
2. Continuum 2.1 Shaders
I had a friend use this for a school project once and he got an A+
See Continuum 2.1 Shaders in action:
Continuum 2.1 is easily the most realistic texture pack out there. No other shader makes you feel like you’re playing a triple-A masterpiece like this one does. I seriously can’t overstate how much this shader pack overhauls the game. It takes some powerful hardware, but for those of you with high-end gaming PCs and a desire to take Minecraft to the next level, this is the shader for you. This is also the most expensive shader on this list (with ApolloRT being the only other paid shader pack), so take that into consideration.
What’s Great About Continuum 2.1:
- Makes Minecraft feel like Metro Exodus
- Lighting that manages to be stunning while maintaining visibility
- A new experience in every environment
1. Sildur’s Vibrant Shaders
If someone says Sildur's Vibrant isn't the best we kindly but firmly ask them to leave
See Sildur’s Vibrant Shaders in action
What can I say about Sildur’s Vibrant Shaders that hasn’t been said? The instant you load up the shader pack it feels like you’ve entered into a new world. Not even a new game; a new world. The beams of light at sunset are positively stunning, as is the glow of torches underneath the night sky. Every block seems to be transformed by this shader pack. If your PC can handle it, do yourself a favor and get Sildur’s Vibrant Shaders.
What’s Great About Sildur’s Vibrant Shaders:
- Completely revamped lighting
- Spectacular water features
- Makes any scene feel exponentially more dramatic
