MTG Arena Best Ways to Spend Gems [Top 5 Ways]
What are riches worth if you don’t ever spend them? Magic arena’s gems have a laundry list that they pay for, seeing as they’re the premium currency on the client. But, unlike gold, gems aren’t nearly as easy to come by, and aren’t good to just be squandering on everything they can be spent on. Here, we’re going to look at the 5 best choices to spend those gems on to maximize what MTG Arena has to offer!
5) Limited-Time Offer Pets and Cosmetics
Peep the fit. Lookin' pretty clean with a Kaya avatar.
Expression of the self is a big part of everyone’s game. Everyone loves to see their little dragon or griffin pet hang around in the game screen, or see Jace or Ajani as their avatar to represent their favorite Magic lore and characters. However, these items, like many on this list, can be purchased with gold, which is readily earned by completing quests and winning games. And seeing as it’s easier to accumulate than gems are, why spend gems on things you can easily get with gold? But some items are limited, and they’re very cheap for gems, usually only costing a few gems for a small item to a few hundred for limited Avatars. So, in the end, you could easily grab that little spirit for the Halloween season each October, or you can save those gems and see what you can spend it on with a little extra put away for later.
- Head to the Store in MTG Arena
- Look under Daily Deals, Featured, Avatars, Sleeves, or Pets depending on what you’re deciding to grab.
- Search through and select the best fit!
4) Packs!
Let's face it, no one can resist getting these packs no matter what you use to get them.
Packs are never going to be bad buys. Everyone needs cards to play whatever format they play, and even though gold can also be used to pay for them, spending a few gems for the chance to finish a collection and unlock your Vault and get you ready for a new season to come as sets are released. And, even as you complete one set as your collection, you can continue buying packs of that one, cashing in wild cards for things you need from other sets, pulling random wild cards from packs every so often and completing your Wildcard wheels. So if you’re looking to complete a collection to be ready to play any format you may choose, go ahead and turn some gems into cards! Chances are, they’ll go a long way into earning you more gems in the future.
- Through the Store, go to Packs
- Select a Set
- Select either a single pack or a pack bundle
- Supply the appropriate count of gems
3) Mastery Pass
Talk about returns!
For 3400 gems, you can unlock one of the biggest returns in your magic Arena investment. The Mastery Pass is a seasonal tree of level-up rewards mirroring your normal mastery track, but with the Mastery Pass, you unlock more rewards for each level. More packs to open, more gold, more gems, cosmetics, everything. This could easily return so many gems and gold if it’s worked toward, the trick would be saving the gems needed to get it. But, in order to make the most of your experience on arena, maybe take a look at saving your gems up! The Mastery Pass resets each season, but you can for sure start seeing its benefits if you’re a regular player at all on Arena.
- Head To the Mastery heading
- Click the Mastery Pass at the bottom right
- Provide 3400 gems and complete purchase
2) Constructed Events
When in doubt, grind it out.
For a small amount of gems, you can enter a group of events on Arena centered around different constructed events. In standard, historic, alchemy, and explorer, you can spend 750 gems to play til you either win 7 times or lose 3. For such a low entry cost, you can make up to 950 gems back, a 200 gem profit! However, these formats are very competitive, usually not the place for a person that may not be quite as versed in gameplay as one who’s been grinding ranked matches in their respective formats. But, if you’re confident and ready for a challenge, hop on in! It’s never bad to spend gems on healthy competitive experience.
- Head to the Play option
- Click the Formats heading
- Click the Constructed subheading
- Select your format, provide the proper entry fee
- Good luck and do your best!
1) Limited and Special Events
Big gem rewards, big play reward! That's a win-win in my book!
Without a doubt, the best things to invest gems into on arena are Limited and Special events. These events are often slightly more expensive to enter, but have much higher yields in rewards. The most common of these are Limited format events: Quick, Traditional, and Premiere Drafts, and Sealed events. Each of these formats usually cost 1500 gems to enter, 750 for quick drafts, and can earn back 6 packs and 2200 gems. But on top of these events, there are also Prerelease and Release events, qualifiers, and Opens, each can range from piles of gems as a reward or even cash prizes in some special cases! So without a doubt, if there’s anything worth some gems, it has to be limited and special events. Look out for new ones every week! You may find some big rewards along the way.
- Head back to the Play option
- Click Formats
- Click Limited or New
- Select your event format
- Just as before, just pay your entry and good luck!
