MTG Arena Best Ways to Spend Gold [Top 5 Ways]

Gold can make or break the experience of the average MTG Arena spellslinger. It’s bright, shiny, and often times hard not to burn on the first few things you see in the store. However, there is a modicum of strategy when it comes to spending hard-won gold in Arena, and here, we’ll take a look into the 5 best places to spend the gold you earn so you can get the best returns on your investment.

5. Cosmetic Sleeves, Pets, Avatars, Stickers, and Card Arts

Look how you want to look in your games!

Aesthetics! Everyone loves to express their game their own way. Be it with character stickers, sleeves of your favorite Capenna crime families, or a cute flaming cyber wolf buddy to keep you company as you play matches. These additions don’t really add anything that’s strategically helpful or advantageous in any way, but they’re definite par for any online free game. Usually cheap and easy to earn with in-game gold, they're a solid choice if you just want to open up your arena account and play knowing it’s all yours!

There’s not even that much to it!

  • Go to the Arena shop under the shopping cart icon
  • Go to the categories listed at the bottom, there are a couple for Avatars, Sleeves, and Bundles. Or, you can go to Featured or Daily Deals to find sales.
  • If you like personalized Sleeves, you can go to that category, same for avatars. Bundles is where you will find deals on avatar and sleeve art bundles, and oftentimes special card art and stickers pertaining to different planeswalkers like Karn and Jace.

4. Limited Offer Bundles

Aww, look my werewolf pup likes you!

On top of looking the part when you play, Arena often has specials on different bundles. Sometimes, they pertain to lore and story, dealing with the planeswalkers and creatures of a favored part of the plot that still makes a good part of Magic’s history and attraction. Other times, they’re just fan faves from the early days. These choices are usually perfectly solid if you have some good gold to sell. However, some of the best ones are limited time only, and are found under Daily Deals. Snag a deal and see for yourself!

  • Again, under the Store you head to the categories for either Bundles or Daily Deals
  • You can select from pack bundles, gem bundles, Character bundles, and a number of other limited offers and promotions.
  • Once you hit select, you’ll redeem everything listed for the bundle!

3. Packs!

Ahhh, new card smell.

Stack, crack, can’t go wrong with a Pack! Sure you earn them just by playing or redeeming play codes, but honestly when you’re really looking at it, you’re going to spend a considerable amount of gold just on errant packs! Sometimes in bulk. If you’re looking to expand a collection, the first thing to do is get your hands on tons of packs, because if you open lots of packs, you get more cards and also have a chance to get wildcards, if your wildcard wheel isn’t already taking care of those. So honestly, all those out there that don’t want to be restricted in what they play as they boot up Arena, get some packs!

  • Under the Store icon, you have a couple options as before: Packs and Bundles have your back here.
  • Under packs you can buy single packs of any sets from standard or even a bunch that are all historic or Alchemy playable.
  • Choose your pack or your bundle of packs, and turn in your gold, and then go to town!

2. Anthology Bundles

Now that;s a warm welcome into a format.

With the advent of the new formats in Arena, you can now also get a big hand up in starting out in these new frontiers! Explorer and Historic anthologies are groups of staple cards for the formats, and they’ve been released for 24000 gold on average. They’re limited time offers but if you really like the idea of having a chance to play in any of these new formats, they’re a great investment to brave a new world!

  • Under the Store, go to Bundles
  • Scroll to the right you can find a few offers for Explorer and Historic anthologies.
  • 25000 gold later, you’ve got a good spread of staples to get started!

1. Events

Gold buys events, which means more games, which means more gold, which means more events, which means more games, which means more gold.

Another list, another top pick, and it’s really no surprise that I’d have to say the best thing to ever spend gold on if you can are Events. Standard, Historic, and Explorer events are evergreen now in 2022 and for 2500 gold you can hop into any. Along with these you still also can hop into periodically rotating sealed and drafts as well as weekly surprise events. All of these have great rewards, but also are just great experiences for players. Challenging, but fulfilling, these events have high rewards, even if it’s a simple quick draft. Drafts especially help you out because they help you crack open draft boosters with 15 cards, which helps skyrocket your vault progress to keep those wildcards rolling on in! So all in all, if you’re looking to spend gold, pour it directly into a good time by getting in on some events. You’ll reap massive benefits, and who knows! You may just learn a few things and even improve your game at the same time.

  • Go to Play
  • Select under the flag icon for Events
  • Scroll around! Find one you can afford and that sounds fun: Standard, Historic, and Explorer events are all either best of 1 or best of 3 games against fairly strong competition. Drafts and Sealed events are under Limited. Sealed Events don’t ever really change, but Drafts are either Quick, Premiere, or Traditional drafts: Quick drafts let you draft at your own pace with bots and then face off against others that have built decks in the same way with their own bot tables. Premier Drafts are a lot like paper drafts where you sit in a queue with a group of other players and you each draft packs online and then play others that are also doing the same, and then Traditional Drafts are just like Premiere but are best of 3 matches.
  • Have fun! Win or lose the experience is the key here. Remember that, because if you’re new, it can be rather hard to get consistent wins. But you get better by playing!
