[Top 15] Skyrim Best Landscape Mods

Exploration is one of the best aspects of any Elder Scrolls game. So it stands to reason that the world needs to be an interesting space for us to enjoy it. And thankfully, Bethesda created a detailed world with enough distinct features for us to enjoy this game for more than 10 years.

You might have started the game with only walking, because you wanted to see everything the world has to offer. After years of familiarity though, you pretty much know everything. The mods in this list will touch up the entire worldspace, so it will instill that sense of wonder again. I definitely recommend playing without fast travel.

Since the mods in this list all deal with the external worldspace, there will be certain incompatibilities. Mods altering the same zone will usually need a patch, so be sure to check for patches. In most cases, you’ll only have objects floating mid-air, but it can get worse than that.

15. Markarth Reach Environment Upgrade

The Reach is a region in Skyrim’s east, bordering on High Rock. This mod goes out of its way to give this region a very mystical look. Lots of little details have been added to make you feel like you’re in a very strange land.

One of the most noticeable of these landmarks are strange pillar-like structures that reach for the sky. While I didn’t find anything in the lore that supports it, nothing contradicts it either. It makes you feel like you’re walking through a place of undiscovered myth.

14. Unique Locations - Riverwood Forest

Image
Body Image

The Riverwood region is quite beautiful, lying at the edge of Falkreath. This makes the area quite forested with areas of wildness everywhere. With this mod, the region becomes even more beautiful and strange.

The mod’s goal is to change the forest landscape to make it more mysterious and vast. There are hundreds of hand placed objects everywhere and not everything is as familiar as before. The mod is only available for Special Edition, but Legendary has a different mod which isn’t as great but beautiful nonetheless.

13. Unique Border Gates

Image
Body Image

Crossing the border illegally is not cool, and we get a feel for this sentiment in the game. Your character is literally arrested for that crime. Yet, when you go to any of the game’s borders, all you find are empty roads and invisible barriers.

This mod makes every single border gate unique. Well, first it builds them up to be proper gates. On top of that, they all have unique names and their locations determine their aesthetics. This mod is kind of an immersion mod if you think of it.

12. Whiterun Watchtower Doesn't Start Broken

Image
Body Image

There are some things that you might not notice at first, but once you do it’s just insensible and jarring. You’ll see what I’m talking about if you walk by the Whiterun Watchtower before the dragon’s attack. We know that it’s Mirmulnir who leaves the place in a wreck, and yet it’s already broken. Not immersive at all, unless Balgruuf is just stingy.

This wonderfully immersive mod makes sure that the Watchtower is undamaged and functional before the attack. While the design of the fort isn’t particularly spectacular, the walled watchtower is believable. Once you finish Dragon Rising, the tower will revert back to vanilla without any hitch. In my tests, I found incompatibilities with alternate start mods, so make sure to use the appropriate patches.

11. Immersive Fallen Trees

Image
Body Image

You’d think that the Skyrim fandom wouldn’t make a huge fuss about fallen trees, but you would be wrong. Granted, no one was complaining about the lack in vanilla Skyrim. But the moment this mod came out, it became a staple in almost every mod list.

This mod adds fallen trees to many different locations of the game, giving it an aesthetic appeal. But it serves a second purpose as well. You can use these trees as bridges to enhance your traversal around the world, making the gameplay much more interesting.

10. Oblivion Gates Remade

Image
Body Image

Remember that time when the world faced an all out invasion from Dagon’s realm of Oblivion? Yeah, all things considered there should be remnants of Oblivion gates everywhere. Based on the information from the lore, we know that they invaded everywhere. This mod fixes that by adding Oblivion Gates around the world.

The gates are only cosmetic, so nothing fancy like throwing you in the deadlands. These gates enhance the feeling of living in a world with a rich history, and makes the exploration a lot more fun. And if you think that the people of Skyrim might have destroyed them… Well, let me remind you that the people of Morthal live less than a kilometer away from a vampire’s cave.

9. Ancient Land

Image
Body Image

In the case of this mod, it’s all in the name. Skyrim is an ancient land shrouded in myth and mystery, and the goal of this mod is to deepen that feeling. Like some of the other mods in this list, it does that by adding structures of a forgotten past, adding to that surreal feeling.

Naturally, this mod is going for a fantasy-esque approach, so you might want to skip out if that’s not your thing. Lots of objects have been added around the roads and in the worldspace to remind you of the ancientness of this world. This will make your travels more rewarding as you experience the wonder of this world.

8. Nordic Ruins of Skyrim

Image
Body Image

The land of Skyrim is dotted with ruins of the ancient Nords. Some of them were burial crypts while others were great cities. Unfortunately, having the same structure, it’s hard to tell them apart. This mod comes in and does what can be done, by making simple but extensive changes to the exteriors of these ruins.

The mod only covers a handful of ruins, but the impact is definitely noticeable. The goal is to give their exteriors that epic feeling, and does it satisfy! Places like Labyrinthian and Sarthaal were impressive to begin with, but now they truly feel like ancient cities.

7. Imperial Stone

Image
Body Image

While the Imperial history of Skyrim is much more recent compared to the nordic heritage, it is undeniable. Skyrim is practically the founder of the Empire, and the land is full of Imperial forts which now sadly lie abandoned. This mod won’t add any features, but a lot of details to these abandoned fortresses.

First of all, you’ll see the forts being more extensive and built-up. Some of them are slightly larger than before while others have a lot of extra details. Fort Greymoor, for example, now has a destroyed village on the outskirts. You’ll also see lots of little tents and shrines when a faction takes over the forts.

6. Ryn's Dragon Mounds Collection

Image
Body Image

Ryn is a modder who has recently been making a lot of these environmental landscape edits. While all of them are impressive, if I had to choose one, it would be this one. Dragon mounds are burial spots of dragons in Skyrim, and it’s a shame that all of them look the same. Not anymore.

With this mod, now every dragon will have a unique touch. It’s not exactly environmental storytelling, but the details do make a difference. Since there aren’t many mods that touch these areas, it should be free of any kinds of incompatibilities. And be sure to check out other mods by the author if you like this.

5. Hold Border Guards - Definitive Edition

Image
Body Image

The land of Skyrim is divided into different holds that don’t always see eye to eye. Even if you take the civil war out, these rulers are a lot more independant compared to the Dukes of Cyrodiil. And yet, when you’re roaming through Skyrim, walking from one hold to another is too easy.

This mod doesn’t actually make traveling difficult. You’ll still go from one place to another as before, but now you’ll see different checkposts between each hold. All of these border checkposts have their unique appearances and are manned with armed guards. Some of them are a little close to bandit camps, making it look a little dubious. But all in all, it adds some nice flavors to the world.

4. Distinct Landscape

Image
Body Image

The Elder Scrolls series has a long standing history of doing certain things that fans don’t like. In this case, we’ve seen instances of in-game locations not looking on par with the descriptions from previous games. A lot of this can be explained by engine limitations, but some of the other things are still strange. Or it might just be a matter of taste, at the end of the day.

Distinct Landscapes is a mod that aims to make the world of Skyrim inconsistent with the depiction of lore from the previous games. A lot of this is done by removing trees from the Whiterun, Morthal and Dawnstar areas, giving them a harsher look. In contrast, Falkreath will have bigger trees and Windhelm is full of dead trees. That might not sound like a lot, but it makes a lot of difference in game.

The only two holds it leaves untouched are Markarth and Riften. Those two were pretty appealing and unique to begin with. And if you wanted something more for Markarth, check out the first mod in this list. There hasn't been a Special Edition port of this legendary mod yet, unfortunately.

3. Lux Via

Image
Body Image

There are several Skyrim mods that focus on revamping the roads. Lux Via isn’t even the best one, that mod’s higher on the spot. But Via’s focus on lighting makes it stand out. The name might ring a bell, because it’s part of the author’s Lux series of lighting mods.

First thing you’ll notice is a lot more pretty light sources by the sides of the roads. But just lighting itself wouldn’t be that interesting. The roads are now littered with props and cues that complement the environment they’re in. You’ll find mammoth bones near the entrances of giant camps, gazebos near Whiterun and derelict coffins near historical nordic ruins.

The mod also replaces many of the bridges in Skyrim, giving them a unique look. Personally, it replaced Skyrim Bridges for me, which did the same thing. It also makes it rewarding to play without the compass, as you can now pay more attention to the unique world around you.

2. Daedric Shrines

Image
Body Image

The Daedra of The Elder Scrolls are complicated entities. Just calling them demons or evil gods doesn't suffice, because nothing in TES is that simple. And while some cultures do view them as nothing more than evil entities, their presence in the hearts of people cannot be denied. Just the fact that every game has a quest for each and every Daedric Prince is proof enough.

Sadly, the presence of their worshippers isn't that strong. Unlike Oblivion, where everyone had a shrine and a statue, we only see a handful of them. And that’s where this mod comes in. It doesn’t add any content, except for these shrines to the Daedras. The mod also has replacer models for the existing ones. You can check out their locations on the description page, but it’s more rewarding to stumble onto them in your travels.

1. Northern Roads

Image
Body Image

As far as road mods go, none of the other mods go as above as beyond as Northern Roads. It takes influence directly from real world sources and incorporates them into the game. You’ll see many roadside totem poles and ruins that remind you of the ancient heritage of this land. The influences from real life are used cleverly to create a distinction between the regions of Skyrim, making the world feel alive.

All the road textures themselves have been reworked. They all use textures rather than meshes, so you’ll see a slight performance boost. The bridges have been replaced with unique models and textures as well. Some of the things this mod does is similar to what Lux Via does, so obviously you’ll have incompatibilities. Thankfully, we have compatibility patches that ensure Northern Roads works with many of the popular mods.
