In this epic tale where sinners are the main heroes of the story, which of them should you take with you in your journey?
Launched back in July 2020, Tales of Crestoria is a turn-based JRPG offering its players the chance to see the world through the eyes of our merry band of protagonists affectionately branded as “Transgressors” by the public. Not everyone thinks Kanata and the others are evil, and to be honest, the game goes out of its way to prove to you that they’re not. These other characters, whom Kanata have personally befriended and/or are acquainted with, are the protagonists of their own Tales of titles - but are made part of his world to further enrich it.
And give us players a chance to roll for them, because this is a gacha game.
Crestoria’s current summoning banner includes the set of starter heroes available to players from the very beginning, along with a lengthy list of newly released characters and the alternate versions or costumes of the old ones. While all of them have their own merits as heroes, we consider the following as the ones who have stood the test of time - and can still be considered the best starter characters to roll for, more than a year after Tales of Crestoria began. They are:
5. Kohaku Hearts (Tales of Hearts)
Flaming batons go!
Kohaku is a hybrid fighter - she can hurt and heal. However, her main draw is her “Anti-Magic” arte as it removes all physical ailments and restores 24% HP (at level 8/8) from 1 ally with a cooldown of 2. This is invaluable in both PvP and PvE battles as she can heal an ally afflicted with debilitate, burn, poison, curse, or paralysis. In fighting bosses who can inflict Wildfire on your heroes, her presence is a must - even a game-saver.
Lastly, her Awakening Skill grants everyone in the lineup an additional 12% MAX HP regardless of their element and weapon usage and gives all Martial Artes users +10 to their OL Gauge when they use artes. This makes her awesome to include in line-ups - whether you’re building an all-Wind team or a purely Martial Artes team regardless of elemental affinity!
What's Great About Kohaku:
- Cleanser
- Decent HIT generator
- Gives the entire team longevity when awakened (+12% MAX HP)
4. Cress (Tales of Phantasia)
Enjoying a bit of peace before ass-kicking commences.
More than a year after launch and even with a handful of OP Earth heroes released, Cress can still be counted as among the most versatile characters in the game. He really shines when you use him in raids - as his Transcendence Board (TB) grants him +120% ATK when activated! He’s also awesome to use in the arena to get rid of those pesky arte users, as his TB gives him +200% ATK against them. He can be used as either hit gen (due to his Mystic Arte and his second arte Phoenix Dance) or finisher when equipped with a Torment Memoria Stone.
If you don’t want him in the front row, his max awakened skill of +10% ATK to all allies makes him worthwhile to put in the backline - whether you’re building an Earth-only lineup or a team filled with sword users. In fact, he's better put in the latter since everyone will also benefit from his second passive skill, which restores sword-type allies’ HP by 15% when an enemy breaks.Lastly, he benefits from Gnome’s blessing - which, when fully activated, also increases all his parameters (ATK, DEF, HP, Damage multiplier, Damage reducer, OL Gauge, CRIT hit rate).
What's Great About Cress:- Versatile - can act as hit generator or finisher
- Awesome to use in Raids and Arena due to attack multipliers in his TB
- Benefits from Gnome’s blessing
3. Kanonno E. (Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology 2)
Coming in like a wrecking ball.
We have no idea what the game has against the Water element as, more than a year later, it still doesn’t have as many OP attackers as other elements do. That’s why Kanonno - a Water Ally - is still considered a fantastic character to get at the beginning given her high ATK! She also shines when used during Fire Raids, since her TB gives her +120% ATK if activated. When awakened, she’s almost the equivalent of Cress but for longsword users, as she gives the team +10% ATK and restores 13% of their HP when the enemy breaks.
While the character is undoubtedly great, Kanonno’s stone is nothing to sneeze at - it’s CRIT damage +150% to Longsword-type allies when fully ascended. Awaken the character, maximize her stone, and you can count on her to destroy enemies left and right - all while looking super cute!
What's Great About Kanonno:
- High ATK
- Great to use, particularly in Fire raids
- Her memoria stone
2. Stahn Aileron (Tales of Destiny)
Just another dude with a big ass flaming sword.
Fire is definitely an element saturated with OP heroes, and Stahn is still one of them. Having low cooldown artes and his MA at 180 OL, you can bet he can dish out a world of hurt especially to Earth enemies. His TB gives him an additional 15% Crit Rate and 70% Attack (when HP is at 50% or above) - meaning you can use him everywhere and still enjoy its benefits. His awakening skill also edges out Cress’s and Kanonno’s, giving all allies +12% ATK, as well as +5 to the OL Gauge of Fire allies every turn. This makes him a popular addition to an all-Fire team!
Lastly, he benefits from Efreet’s blessing - which, when fully activated, increases all his parameters (ATK, DEF, HP, Damage multiplier, Damage reducer, OL Gauge, CRIT hit rate). As if he isn’t powerful on his own enough! What’s Great about Stahn:
- Low cooldown artes
- High ATK character usable anywhere
- Benefits from Efreet’s blessing
1. Leon Magnus (Tales of Destiny)
Don't make him angry!
See, there’s a reason Leon is still a popular character to use particularly in the arena; if you don’t kill him first, chances are he’s going to kill one of yours - especially if they’re a Light ally and he’s equipped with a Dark Torment Memoria stone. Leon’s the definition of a glass cannon, with his high ATK stats, below-average health and defense, and 9% evasion. His MA has an 80% chance of casting Curse, which can end an already weakened enemy if not healed in time. There are also special battles where a tough enemy can only be damaged via Curse, which just makes Leon even more of a necessity in one’s hero list!
As a Dark ally, only Light enemies have an advantage over him - except he’s also strong against them. A double-edged sword, true - but Leon undoubtedly looks cool, too.
What’s Great about Leon:
- High ATK
- MA can inflict curse
- Dark ally
Whether you’re a new player trying Crestoria for the first time, or a veteran player returning to the series after a hiatus, having these five characters at the onset will undoubtedly carry you far into the game - at least, before its shutdown come February 2022. Onward, Transgressors!
