[Top 7] Destiny 2 Best Rocket Launcher (2020 Edition)

Or die trying
Blast your way through the competition

No matter what the most powerful weapon in the meta is, rocket launchers will always have a place as explosive burst damage dealers.

Nothing quite says “power” like a rocket launcher. While they might be outclassed as far as damage since the nerfs to auto-reloading skills, rockets are still the go-to for instantaneous burst damage and aren’t to be trifled with in PVP. Below is a list of the top seven best rocket launchers you won’t want to miss before the end of Season of Dawn.

7:Sins of the Past (High Impact Rocket Launcher)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGq6zZ_2Th8 (gameplay)

One of the original rewards from completing the Leviathan way back in season one, Sins of the past has remained a go-to cluster launcher due to its fixed roll and good damage.

Why Sins of the Past is good:

  • You can easily get this weapon from running the Leviathan a few times (you really don’t need an excuse to do so, it’s easily one of the best raids in the game.)
  • Despite the nerf to cluster munitions making them slightly worse at boss damage, you’ll still be hard-pressed to find a legendary weapon better at clearing massive crowds of enemies with a single shot.

Stats:

  • Stability: 63
  • Handling: 70
  • Reload Speed: 42
  • Velocity: 50
  • Blast Radius: 95
  • Rounds Per Minute: 15
  • Magazine: 1

How to get it:

  • Simply play the Leviathan raid or either of the two raid lairs that occur on Calus’s massive ship.
  • Either receive the weapon as a random drop or turn in the tokens you receive from beating each encounter to receive it.

6. Cup-Bearer SA/2 (Adaptive Rocket Launcher)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-eM4hpyUoI (gameplay)

The only rare weapon you should consider outside of PVP, the Cup-Bearer SA/2’s main strength is simply how easy it is to get.

Why Cup-Bearer SA/2 is good:

  • While lacking extra perks or any sort of high tier stats, you probably already have this weapon if you’ve completed the vanilla Destiny 2 campaign, giving you access to cluster rockets for easy add clear at a moment's notice.

Stats:

  • Stability: 42
  • Handling: 43
  • Reload Speed: 44
  • Velocity: 48
  • Blast Radius: 75
  • Rounds Per Minute: 20
  • Magazine: 1

How to get it:

  • You’ll naturally unlock this weapon through the course of play via public event rewards, the campaign, or rewards for activities.
  • Additionally, you can pull this weapon from your collection at any time.

5. Twin Tailed Fox (Exotic Rocket Launcher)

Though it’s definitely not the strongest Exotic rocket launcher, Twin Tailed Fox makes up for it in personality and novelty. Given you’re not exactly flush with choice when it comes to rocket launchers, Twin Tailed Fox is worth a try.

Why Twin-Tailed Fox is good:

  • Though it’s not the most powerful, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a more unique weapon to use, the twin rockets catching enemies off guard in PVP and catching any stragglers in PVE.
  • The split damage types can be useful for dealing with different kinds of elemental shields without switching weapons.

Stats:

  • Stability: 55
  • Handling: 52
  • Reload Speed: 36
  • Velocity: 55
  • Blast Radius: 65
  • Rounds Per Minute: 40
  • Magazine: 1

How to get it:

  • Either hope Xur is selling it on any given week or get it from a random exotic world drop.
  • Alternatively, if you preordered Shadowkeep you’ll already have it along with a unique ornament.

4. Bad Omens (Aggressive Rocket Launcher)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGECTCBY_Zg (gameplay)

One of the original Gambit weapons added back in Forsaken, Bad Omens has survived the test of time by being a solid platform and offering good perk combinations.

Why Bad Omens is good:

  • You can easily farm the roll you’re looking for from the Menagerie without having to grind time consuming or weird activities.
  • The perk combination of cluster bombs and tracking module makes this rocket launcher one of the most lethal available for PVP due to its wide kill radius and ability to follow agile guardians.

Stats:

  • Stability: 34
  • Handling: 28
  • Reload Speed: 65
  • Velocity: 75
  • Blast Radius: 60
  • Rounds Per Minute: 25
  • Magazine: 1

How to get it:

  • Slot in a Rune of Ambition into the first slot of your Menagerie Chalice, any purple rune in the second slot, and any red rune in the third slot and complete a run of the Menagerie.
  • Alternatively, if you reset your Infamy rank three times (a step necessary to get the “Dredgen” title if you’re interested in that sort of thing) a god rolled Bad Omens with tracking module and cluster bombs is available for sale from Drifter.

3. Death Bringer (Exotic Rocket Launcher)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHH2-0Xy-U8 (gameplay)

A (relatively) new exotic introduced with Shadowkeep, Deathbringer is a useful weapon filling the niche of being able to take out enemies hiding behind cover. While not as useful in all situations as some other picks, it definitely has its place in any guardian’s arsenal.

Why Death Bringer is good:

  • The special airburst ability of Deathbringer lets you detonate the projectile partway through its flight path, causing void energy to rain down below it, frying anyone unlucky enough to be where it lands.
  • Not only does that give you the ability to take out enemies behind cover, the longer the void energy falls the higher the damage it does, meaning it has some utility for boss damage.

Stats:

  • Blast Radius: 100
  • Velocity: 42
  • Stability: 58
  • Handling: 69
  • Reload Speed: 67
  • Rounds/Min: 15
  • Magazine: 1

How to get it:

  • Run through all three Moon Lost Sectors and complete the Lunar Spelunker bounty.
  • Open the system core vault in the K1 Revelation Lost Sector.
  • Kill Nightmares on the Moon with Arc abilities.
  • Open the chest next to Eris on the Moon in her lookout over the Pyramid.
  • Run through the Faculties of the Skull mission.
  • Complete Hellmouth Public Events, K1 Revelation and kill the Bone Collector
  • In the Scarlet Keep strike, kill the High Conductor.
  • Defeat regular, orange bars, yellow bars, bosses or other Guardians
  • Complete the Choir of Damned mission.

2. Wardcliff Coil (Exotic Rocket Launcher)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMilbWfqP0A (gameplay)

A tried and true powerhouse both in PVE and PVP, accept no substitute if you need to clear a hallway of guardians or a combat arena of adds.

Why Wardcliff Coil is good:

  • The Wardcliff Coil is likely the closest you’ll ever get to a rocket shotgun, spewing out a whirlwind of lethal rockets that can one-shot any guardian and most PVE enemies in the general vicinity of where you pointed.
  • Additionally, you can make your individual rockets track enemies to further guarantee the kill by completing the exotic catalyst.

Stats:

  • Blast Radius: 63
  • Velocity: 96
  • Stability: 60
  • Handling: 82
  • Reload Speed: 37
  • Rounds/Min: 60
  • Magazine: 1

How to get it:

  • Either hope Xur is selling it on any given week or get it from a random exotic world drop.

1. Truth (Exotic Rocket Launcher)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOWolonlDEU&t=2s (gameplay)

Chances are if you’ve ever played any version of Gambit you know exactly how lethal truth is. While the tracking module on most other rockets functions more as a suggestion, Truth will mercilessly hunt down its target from across the map. If you  use this weapon, prepare to be loathed (but also at the top of the leaderboard.)

Why Truth is good:

  • Due to the long ranges involved in Gambit, whether you’re the one invading or the one hunting the invader, use this weapon. Where anything else except a sniper rifle would fail to reach the enemy, Truth succeeds and requires none of the skill of a headshot with a sniper.
  • The exotic quest to get Truth, while somewhat complex, doesn’t take particularly long, meaning you can be terrorizing Gambit within a few hours of first picking it up.

Stats:

  • Blast Radius: 100
  • Velocity: 52
  • Stability: 70
  • Handling: 69
  • Reload Speed: 54
  • Rounds/Min: 15
  • Magazine: 1

How to get it:

  • Complete a run of the Menagerie
  • Talk to Petra Venj in the Dreaming City
  • Complete an Ascendant Challenge
  • Find four map fragments.
  • Decode the map fragments by completing three Dreaming City Patrols, killing enemies of Nessus and Tangled Shore, then complete three Nightfall Strikes with a handicap
  • Find hidden collectibles in the Warden of Nothing strike
  • Kill the boss while ascendant and find a hidden chest.
