Discover our 12 best sci-fi games for 2015
Science Fiction is one of those fantastic genres that allow us to disappear completely in a new world. The most common features in these games involve space travel, holographics, and a whole lot of aliens. This list takes a look at some of the best sci-fi games that you should check out this year.
12. Homeworld Remastered CollectionImage
Chases are even more exciting in space.
Homeworld claims to be the game that redefined the RTS genre, and they’re not too far off the mark. It is an epic strategy game that spans over 30 missions and includes a huge array of units to choose from. The battles that you wage all take place in outer space in absolutely gorgeous battleship warfare. The graphics are top of the line and you feel like you are watching an epic movie. If you enjoy RTS games, you have to check this out.
The story follows a people starved of resources and fruitful lands as they discover space travel and seeks out a new home.
Take part in some of the coolest and craziest air maneuvers you've ever seen.
11. Warhammer 40,000: Space MarineImage
Killing Orks was never more fun!
Sometimes you just need to pick up a machine gun and take out all of your pent up frustrations on Orks. That is when you play Warhammer 40K: Space Marine. It is a third person shooter that puts you in charge as Captain Titus as he leads the Space Marines against an invading horde of ugly green Orks.
They've got a machine... Watch out.
There really isn’t much more to the game than that, but you don’t really need anything else honestly. The game is full of action and is exciting from start to finish. You feel really involved in your duty to protect humanity from brutal extinction by the hands of the Orks. The game is well executed all around.
As you can see, this game is not child friendly
10. Mass Effect 3Image
The awesome cast of Mass Effect 3
In Mass Effect 3 you get to embark on your final adventure as Captain Shepard and his crew. If you enjoyed games like Dragon Age, then you will love this series. The main plot revolves around you rallying your crew and fighting to stop a group called the Reapers before they destroy the universe.
The holographic weapons were an awesome part of the franchise.
What makes this series so fantastic other than the exciting and dynamic combat, numerous customization options, and the massive world to explore, is the morality system that actually changes the game based on the choices you make. I remember having to reload a distant save point because I accidentally shot and killed Rex… I didn’t think Shepard would actually do it.
Commander Shepard in exciting combat.
9. Dead space 2Image
We call them zombies. They call them Necromorphs.
Isaac Clarke’s nightmare didn’t end with Dead Space 1. In the first game you fought your way off of the USG Ishimura that was under siege by it’s dead crew members. Somehow, in the sequel, Isaac wakes up 3 years later on a space station orbiting Saturn. He has no idea how he got there or what is going on. The worst part is that the Necromorphs are back.
Isaac is in for a rough night.
Dead Space 2 is another action packed survival horror game in which you have to solve the great mystery of what is going on, and why are these dead people attacking me?
Trying not to copy Mission Impossible here.
8. Alien: IsolationImage
Here's a face we all know very well.
My absolute two most hated settings for survival horror games are under the sea and in space. Alien: Isolation takes place in the latter. You take charge of a girl named Amanda as she searches for the truth behind her mother’s disappearance.
I hate creepy hallways
15 years after Amanda’s mother disappears they pick up distress signals from her ship. Determined to find out what has happened, Amanda and her crew venture forth on a terrifying journey in which she has to confront the evil that separated them. How will you survive?
Do you think this guy will make it through the game? Wanna bet?
7. Star Trek OnlineImage
They didn't show this in the movie.
This is yet another MMORPG on our list. The free to play Star Trek Online brings the Star Trek universe to the game industry for the first time. The world is massive and all players receive their own ship and crew. This game places high emphasis on exploration and allows you to travel pretty much anywhere you want. You have to check this out if you’re a Trekkie. Unfortunately the name of Spok is probably already taken.
The most awesome star ship there ever was.
6. Planetside 2Image
Shooting down helicopters with a tank because you can.
Planetside 2 was released just a few years ago and is one of the best PvP MMORPG’s out there. The game places you in the middle of a huge war torn world. There are three warring factions out of which you most choose one to ally yourself with. There is the military led empire, the Theocrats, and the Republican freedom fighters.
The great thing about this game is that all warfare between factions is done as PvP, and it’s not just a few dozen soldiers fighting, it is hundreds. You literally get to participate in bloody battles in which hundreds of other real people are fighting.
The game is free and plays as a first person shooter. There are four huge maps in which battles for key locations and structures take place.
There is always time for a photo. Look styling.
5. Eve OnlineImage
Eve Online is the most massive game out there.
Eve Online is by far the oldest game on this list. It is a completely player driven MMORPG set in outer space. The world is massive with over 7,800 star systems to explore. Even though this game was released way back in 2003, it still has a huge loyal fan base that plays it today.
You can wage both physical and economic warfare against other players. You can group up and create empires or explore the massive universe. The things you can do are mostly limited to your imagination due to the player drive nature of the game.
While the game has a flat fee for the initial purchase and a monthly subscription cost, all expansion packs that have been or will be released are free.
Like a roller coaster!
4. DestinyImage
One of the most hyped up games of all time.
Humanity has declined. The golden age of mankind has expired and you must fight to keep your race from going extinct. It is only thanks to a divine guardian that watches over humanity's last stronghold on Earth that aliens have not wiped out the rest of your people yet.
In this exciting shooter mmo you get to take on the role of a badass hero that defends humanity from the alien hordes. You blow up aliens, get glory, and collect loot. What more could you want?
The game is an mmo, but not in the traditional style like World of Warcraft or Star Wars: The Old Republic. The game has a matchmaking service that matches you up with a few players at a time, that way your world doesn’t get run over.
Defend humanity and stand with your friends.
3. Warhammer 40k: RegicideImage
Another bloody Warhammer game.
Warhammer 40K is a universe full with rich lore and exciting races. This turn based strategy game takes everything great about Warhammer and shoves it into a game of chess. The game is dark and brutal. In fact, I bet you would be surprised just how brutal chess can be.
The game has two game modes: Classic, which follows the rules of chess, and Regicide, which involves a lot more dynamic Warhammer action. In both game modes you can play single and multiplayer.
Bet you've never seen such a bloody game of Chess before.
2. Xcom: Enemy UnknownImage
Strategic dispatching of Aliens, that's what the game is about.
The 2012 release of Xcom: Enemy Unknown places you in control of a secret government organization aimed to protect the world from a ruthless alien invasion. As the leader of Xcom, it is up to you to decide where your resources are spent, how you advance your technology, and what combat strategies you use.
The combat is exciting and incorporates many fun mechanics.
The game is a turn based strategy style sci-fi game If you like the RNG system, then this game is for you. In this game you can’t just kick the door down and run in gun’s firing, you have to roll the dice and see what happens.
As part of the game you get to interrogate aliens for information, and if you get lucky you might get to dissect one or two. All in the name of science of course.
Isn't it cute?
1. Star Wars: The Old RepublicImage
The game we we're all waiting for!
Do you love Star Wars? Then jump on board The Old Republic train. This Star Wars game is the 4th most subscribed to MMO in the world, and that's a lot considering that free users get access to almost the entire game. So why do people love this game so much?
Because it is Star Wars! It has light saber's, smugglers, bounty hunters, gold bikinis... Ok, maybe I made that last one up. However, the reason for Star Wars success is its great history. We have grown up watching and loving this franchise, and now we can dive into it and create our own character to take an active role in the shaping of the Star Wars universe.
There are few games out there whose trailers looked as awesome as these.
The world as you see it when you create your character is a world that is bordering open war between the Repulic and the Sith Empire. When you create your character you have an option to choose between multiple races. However, only paying users unlock all race options. The classes include some of the most iconic Star Wars roles such as Jedi Knights, smugglers, and bounty hunters. Who doesn't want to pretend that their character is Darth Maul and bring glory to the Sith?
This game also includes many new and exciting features such as the ability to take cover behind objects to reduce incoming damage. That might not sound like something exciting, but it is the first time a mechanic like that has been incorporated into a major MMO.
Another awesome part of this game is it's size. You think World of Warcraft is big? WoW takes place on a few continents, but Star Wars covers multiple planets! Also, you can play for either factions on the same server. That way you can experience both sides of the story and still feel connected. You could also duke it out with your guild mates in awesome PvP if you wanted.
This game really has it all. It's got dynamic sci-fi combat, exciting races, well-defined classes, in game international markets, class and race specific development, and much much more.
