Have You Tried Building Any of These?
The Wonders of the World have changed throughout the ages as mighty buildings have crumpled and new ones have been erected. One of the beauties of our modern technology is that we are able to recreate some of these wonders virtually to see what they looked like in their prime. One recent trend for gamers is the reconstruction of these feats of architecture in Minecraft. Most of us aren’t professional archeologists that have access to the most recent reconstruction software so Minecraft works as our next best thing. The following list shows the ancient 7 Wonders of the World as recreated by the Minecraft community.
7. Pyramid of Giza by IanHoff
The Pyramid of Giza is unfortunately the only Wonder among the 7 to remain mostly intact today. That should tell you what a well-constructed building it is though. Most Egyptologists believe that this massive Pyramid was built way back in 2,560 BC. That is over 3,800 years ago! The pyramids purpose was likely to serve as a tomb for a great Pharaoh.
The Minecraft re-creation of this Wonder can be seen in the video above. While it is impressive that someone took the time to recreate the Giza pyramid in a proper scale, it is not quite as impressive as some of the other Wonders that required more details than a massive triangle.
6. Statue of Zeus by Vahi125Image
Zeus's face looks a little more square than usual
The mighty Zeus was recreated as a statue by Phidas, a Greek Sculptor around the 430’s BC. The statue was massive and portrayed the powerful god of gods sitting on his throne. Greeks and faithful from all over the world came to the temple of Zeus in Olympia to pray and make sacrifices. A little bit of Trivia for you: It was to this temple and this statue that Hercules went to pray in the Disney movie.
The recreation in Minecraft was done by Vahi125, and as you can see in the images, no details were spared. Great job!
All hail the mighty Zeus!
5. Temple of Artemis by ShimotoImage
This looks like a dungeon entrance from an old game
Artemis’s Temple is another of the 7 Wonders of the World that was visited by many during its glory days. The old temple was rebuilt three times before it was finally destroyed. Today only the foundation of the temple remains.
Its got ponies. Everyone likes ponies right?
The originator of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World, the Antipater of Sidon, spoke these words regarding the temple:
I have set eyes on the wall of lofty Babylon on which is a road for chariots, and the statue of Zeus by the Alpheus, and the hanging gardens, and the colossus of the Sun, and the huge labour of the high pyramids, and the vast tomb of Mausolus; but when I saw the house of Artemis that mounted to the clouds, those other marvels lost their brilliancy, and I said, "Lo, apart from Olympus, the Sun never looked on aught so grand"
Shimoto and JCHelland are responsible for this incredible reconstruction in Minecraft. Hats off to them for an amazing job!
Just incredible!
4. Mausoleum at Halicarnassus by ShimotoImage
How would you like to be buried in that?
Earthquakes were responsible for destroying this Wonder of the World that served as a tomb for several mighty leaders of the Persian Empire. The tomb was huge and lined with beautiful sculptural reliefs on all sides.
There must have been something in the water over in Greece because this building was also designed by the Greek architects, Satyros and Pythius.
Shimoto and JCHelland are back again with this stunning model of the mausoleum in Minecraft. The image might not seem super impressive, but you have to realize that it is zoomed out immensely far so that they can fit the entire structure in one image. It is a very impressive construction!
Amazing! But slightly creepy.
3. Colossus of Rhodes by MCserverUK – kg9dhImage
Stradle the ocean
This was by far one of the tallest statues of the ancient world. The massive depiction of the titan-god Helios stood over 30 meters tall. The statue stood at the islands coast looking out over the open sea. It served as a reminder and celebration of Rhodes’ victory against Cyprus. Unfortunately though, the statue met an untimely demise when a powerful earthquake struck in 226 BC.
This recreation was built by the Minecraft user kg9dh, props to you and great job!
2. Lighthouse of Alxeandria by RutgerFJImage
This is ridiculously impressive!
This ancient Wonder was the third longest surviving structure among the seven. It lasted as long as 1480 when its stones were taken to build the Citadel of Qaitbay. Don’t be angry though, the Lighthouse was only a remnant of its former glory since it had already been severely damaged by numerous earthquakes.
The lighthouse stood on the island of Pharos just off the coast of the Nile Delta. It guided ships through the rocky harbor for many years before it ceased to be used.
This Minecraft adaptation was built by RutgerFJ and his brother. It is a magnificent interpretation! Wonderful work!
How about a romantic getaway?
1. Hanging Gardens of Babylon by Duplex
Whether or not the Hanging Gardens of Babylon were real is a topic of much dispute. The legend claims that the most beautiful garden was constructed by Nebuchadnezzar II as a tribute to his wife who missed the green hills of her homeland Media. No archeological evidence has actually been discovered to prove the garden’s existence, but if it was real, you can imagine it being the most beautiful thing you’d ever seen.
Minecraft user Duplex constructed an interpretation of what he thought the Gardens looked like, and it is one of the best things I’ve ever seen in Minecraft. The attention to detail is astounding and the entire creation is absolutely gorgeous. Definitely check out the video above!
Nothing short of amazing!
This concludes our list for the best interpretations of the Ancient Wonders in Minecraft. Let us know in the coments if you know of any others worth sharing!
