Welcome to USG Ishimura. This is where the fun ends and a true nightmare begins - the crew that you used to work with are now disfigured, bloody monsters that partially resemble human beings - they are hostile, their faces are stuck in a permanent stage of anger and they’re desperately trying to kill you and gather as many corpses as possible.
But how did this happen? Well, we’re gonna get to the bottom of this today in this article, by describing the story of DS Remake from start to finish. Let’s board the USG Ishimura:
The beginning…
You start with a small crew of 5 people aboard USG Kellion, a small ship that responded to the distress call from USG Ishimura. Unable to establish any contact with the ship, Johnson and Chen are trying to land aboard USG Ishimura, unfortunately, due to a malfunction, you crash your vessel into the docking station, barely making it out alive.
As you reach the lobby, you realize some things are strange - blood on the floor, luggage everywhere, and no personnel in sight. Shortly after Issac tweaks around with the ship’s damage status, the lobby enters a quarantine lockdown and that’s when the hell breaks loose - Slashers begin breaking in and almost immediately killing Chen in the process, leaving Kendra and Hammond in disarray and forcing them to escape.
The first goal is to fix the tram, so it’s easier to travel throughout USG Ishimura. After plenty of corridors and heart attacks, Issac manages to fix the tram and head on to the second chapter.
The Medical…
The medical bay was swarmed with injured or disturbed folk who succumbed to dementia and insanity that was caused by the marker. This is only accelerated the growth of corruption and necromorphs, making this sector one of the most dangerous to be in aboard USG Ishimura.
Issac’s goal was to create a hydrazine bomb to blow up a barricade set up by the survivors and gain access to the Captain’s Rig. After some time, Issac collected the necessary items and blew up the barricade, eventually finding the Captain.
Ship Maintenance
Issac has to worry about multiple things - the ship is slowly falling down towards Aegis VII, which was caused by Doctor Kyne in order to stop the infection.
The second issue is the ADS cannons, which are offline, making USG Ishimura susceptible to meteor barrages - Issac has to venture out into the vacuum and reprogram them manually.
Doctor Mercer
Unfortunately, there’s also this prick - he’s a mad scientist, as well as an unitologist who believes that the current outbreak is not an outbreak at all - it’s a gift and everyone must embrace it.
Unfortunately for you, he got his hands on one of the patients from Aegis VII and turned him into a Hunter - a slasher that can regenerate his limbs and take 0 damage.
You have to run around the Medical and go through the most stressful period of this game, run past, or fight through hordes of necromorphs in order to freeze the Hunter in a glass chamber.
Dead Air
If all of the crap mentioned above doesn't sound bad enough, the air quality is gradually becoming worse, due to “corruption” releasing toxic fumes into the air and vent systems, through the necromorphs called Wheezers. Issac has to kill them and face one of the biggest threats - the Leviathan, a massive, tumor-like creature that will come back later on.
False Hope…
After getting rid of the Leviathan and improving the quality of air throughout the Ishimura, Issac has to go to the mining deck in order to retrieve an SOS Beacon, attach it to the surface of an asteroid in the vacuum, and avoid deadly machinery, as well as our beloved necromorphs.
The point of this was to alert anyone in the vicinity for a rescue mission, unfortunately for Hammond, Kendra, and Issac, it was the USM Valor - a military vessel that was supposed to retrieve the marker and kill everyone on board.
Comms Array
In order to establish contact with the USM Valor, you need to fix the comms array by fiddling around with the comms units. The most tragic thing for Issac and Kendra at the time is the fact that USM Valor retrieved one of the escape pods that Hammond deployed earlier - with the Crawler inside.
Before Issac can once more defeat the Leviathan and toss him out into space, the USM Valor is already under attack by the necromorphs. This causes utter chaos aboard the ship, which causes it to steer directly toward the USG Ishimura…
Aboard The USM Valor…
The reason why Issac went aboard the USM Valor was because of a singularity core - earlier, Hammond managed to establish contact with Issac and Kendra and report about a damaged vessel, which could be salvaged and used to escape the USG Ishimura.
Of course, Issac has to go through a new version of hell - super-fast soldier slashers, lasers everywhere that will instantly cut you in half, and a nuclear warhead that will detonate if you even try to blow on it. I wonder why the guys from USM Valor needed it…
And the saddest part is when Hammond meets up once more with Chen, his old friend. Hammond being completely incapable of realizing what his friend has become tries to convince Issac to get him to the Kellion. Shortly after, Hammond gets stabbed in the chest and throws himself, as well as Chen into the singularity core, causing both of them to be brutally disintegrated.
Dr. Kyne and Mercer
Dr Kyne is insane but not evil, Mercer on the other hand is the devil incarnate. Both doctors have opposite plans - Mercer desperately wants the infection to spread to Earth, while Kyne wants to redeem himself and stop the infection once and for all.
Your progress is gonna be hauled by Mercer throwing his babies at you(slashers, crawlers, lurkers, etc) and his biggest baby, the Hunter. After running around with key cards 24/7, Issac manages to kill countless necromorphs, fix the vessel, burn to crisps a Mercer’s hunter, and transport the Marker to the cargo bay. Issac also has a romantic moment with a massive tendril, which he manages to destroy.
Betrayal
Dr Kyne believes that in order to stop the infection on USG Ishimura, is to return the marker back to Aegis VII. Kendra fully understands now that Issac and Kyne both lost their minds and she plays along with their plan - they don’t know that she’s a special agent of EarthGov, who’s supposed to retrieve the marker.
This chapter is pretty difficult, as you have to constantly multitask between fighting off massive tendrils, as well as countless necromorphs charging your way. Issac also has to transport the Marker aboard the vessel that Hammond talked about in the previous chapters.
The primary goal was for Issac, Kendra, and Dr. Kyne to meet up at the vessel, Unfortunately for Kyne, he ends up getting shot in the chest by Kendra, leaving Issac for dead.
Issac is a nutcase at this point and starts talking with Nicole - his beloved girlfriend that kicked the bucket ages ago but Issac’s demented mind and guilt are not allowing him to accept this fact. They both come up with a plan to return the stolen vessel back to USG Ishimura, forcing Kendra to jettison out of the vessel.
“Yes. We’re together now again. Nothing can stop us now.” - Nicole’s and Issac's last words before traveling back to Aegis VII.
Dead Space
For the first time ever, Issac puts his feet on a colony of Aegis VII. His goal is to return the Marker to the pedestal by using the kinesis module, lifting up bridges, and killing countless foes trying to brutally kill you. By far, this will be the hardest chapter for you.
Once you return the Marker, you’ll trigger a convergence event and awaken the Hive Mind but before that, Kendra will trap you in a glass chamber and give you a harsh realization - Nicole Is Dead. Well, for the player it was rather obvious but for Issac, it was quite obviously a massive kick in the balls - still the least painful thing that could have happened to him.
Issac decides to bail the F out of this cursed planet but before that, he finds Kendra trying to do the same thing. He also finds a massive monster called the Hivemind, which was controlling the infection telepathically throughout your journey. The best part is when Kendra gets crushed by one of the tentacles, which actually made me sympathize more with the Hivemind than with Kendra.
After this whole ordeal, you are forced to fight the Hivemind - it’s gonna throw its tendrils at you, puke at you, deploy some weird bombs, toss you in the air, grab you, spank you a few times but after shooting the yellow weak points, it will eventually drop dead and take a nap.
This will give you a moment to finally get into the vessel and escape Aegis VII. Depending on your choices, you will get two endings - one where you accept Nicole’s fate and the second one where you are a unitologist, wishing to build a marker in the future.
