MTG Arena Best Ways to Get Gems [Top 5 Ways]

They’re shiny, blue, and not so easy to come by. Gems in Magic Arena are premium and should definitely be the priority grab when playing. To make the most of your experience, complete your collection, and enter limited time events, you have to know exactly how to get those rocks and start seeing the benefit in going premium.

Method 5: Purchase Direct

When you just can't wait, there is always the direct approach.

Arena really isn’t too unlike any other free to play competitive game, and a definite way to tell is that it has 2 types of currency: gold which is dispensed in the thousands by simply playing the game, and gems which are premium and actually used to convert real world dollars into digital products. That being the case, in the shop you can just simply buy gems for money. It’s easy, but not necessarily ranked high, because why spend money when you can get these currencies free? But if you want to have the complete collection of any and all sets on arena, you definitely can.

  • Under the Shop tab, go to the Gems category
  • Look through the various options in gem bulk sales you may fin
  • Select the option for the amount of gems you most want
  • Fill out the credit card info and submit the purchase

Method 4: Constructed Events

No one ever said the path to riches is easy.

A rather new aspect of Arena is the introduction of evergreen constructed events. For a rather affordable price, you can enter a highly competitive event for constructed players. For 2500 gold, you can put your skill against other players’ and compete to win gems and packs. This is especially effective for experienced players looking for a challenge or to just have an easy way to hone their skills. The biggest drawback, though, is that these events are extremely competitive, and unless you’re used to the highly volatile nature of standard or the complexities of Historic or Explorer, it could be very difficult to really see a large amount of turnover from these events. But, so much as attempting will always give you 50 gems, so it’s not a complete loss.

  • Under the Play tab, go to the category for “Format”
  • Click “Constructed”
  • Scroll to whichever format you may choose and click on its respective listing
  • Click the orange Pay button if you have the required 2500 gold, or if you’re experienced you may even use some gems you may already have if you feel confident that you will get a return on that payment.
  • Click submit deck
  • Choose a legal deck for the format
  • Start playing! Prepare for a stiff round of competition.

Method 3: Limited Events

Phew, and I thought the last one was tough!

Since arena’s creation, limited has been a mainstay in getting gems. By placing well in these events you can make a lot of gems fairly quickly. The cheapest entry is a quick draft at 5000 gold. Meanwhile, 10k gets you into premier and traditional drafts as well as sealed events. Each of these events are always ranked, and the better you do the more skilled your opponents will often be, leading to a scaling difficulty. But, limited is a great tool for growing deckbuilding skills! So it’s almost like a dual investment. Give it a try, you’ll most likely have some fun!

  • Go to the Play tab
  • Hit Limited
  • Choose a sealed or draft event and enter!

Method 2: Weekly Special Events

For those not too into the competitive scene, there’s always a great chance to have fun in special events. Arena often holds limited time special events that are easy to enter and unranked, so anyone of any skill level can enter and do well. They vary in price of entry, but it’s usually a rather low amount of gold, and can easily be the most effective way to earn gems from time to time, or at least earn gold to then use to get gems later.

  • Check arena’s news feeds! It often cycles what event is live at the time.
  • Go to the Play tab, then go to the “Formats” category
  • Click the “All” line
  • Scroll down and find out if there are any open or new events! Enter and have some fun

Method 1: The Mastery Pass

This is 100% not the easiest nor the most intuitive way to get gems, but it definitely is the most effective for enfranchised players. The Mastery Pass is only available for purchase through the Mastery tab. Under your season level and rankings you will see the option to buy it for 3400 gems. Now you might be asking: it costs gems to get gems? And the easy answer is, yeah kind of. But if you’re an enfranchised player, this really does make more sense than you might realize at first. Mastery in MTG Arena is like a level-up system anywhere else, but there are 2 different paths. One is totally free, and each time you level up you either get a pack or a Mastery Orb, which unlocks cosmetics in game. But the other is the Mastery Pass, which gives you a lot more rewards for leveling up. More mastery orbs, more gold, more cosmetics, but most importantly, gems. Just by leveling up, you can earn back 900 gems, and special Draft tokens that allow you to enter drafts and other events for free. And also, you earn tons more gold, which means you can enter any events a lot more often and thereby make more gems.

  • Go under Mastery
  • Click “Unlock Mastery Pass”
  • Present 3400 gems
  • Start playing to reap the rewards and make all of your gems back plus who knows how many more!
