MTG Arena Best Ways To Get Wild Cards [Top 5 Ways]

Rotation’s come and gone, new decks are on the rise for those seeking to get that coveted Mythic rank in Magic arena, and what better way to step up to the plate than to get on the cutting edge of standard’s metagame. But, as with all things, there is a catch. To build decks, you can’t just cobble together piles of pre-built starter decks arena likes to hand off every season to each player, hoping and praying your Frankensteinian abomination holds water in the grinds of rank matches. So what you need is simple: wild cards! And here, we’re going to run down a short 5 item list of the different avenues to get wildcards and complete a collection.

Method 5: Random Daily Win Rewards

Our 5th entry on our search for wild cards brings us to a very overlooked opportunity you probably overlook because it’s so rare, and that is the random daily win count cards. Every day you can win up to 15 games for xp and rewards. Every few wins, you earn a random card, and sometimes that card is a wild card of a random rarity. It’s really nice to get one of these, but it’s extremely random and unpredictable, usually only happening if you earn a card you already have, therefore it becomes more common the closer you get to completing a collection in the first place. Though it's fairly simple, this path is so rare and so random it’s hard to say it’s a good method. Luckily, it is free. And sometimes all you need is that one final card.

  • Just win games. Sometimes they pop up in rewards!

Method 4: Buying Mythic Packs

Packs of the same set with even more chance for pulling wild cards!

There is now an option in MTG Arena, as of Streets of New Capenna’s release, where you can spend gems and gold directly on Mythic Packs. 260 Gems or 1300 gold buys a single Mythic Pack, and there is an option to buy a bundle of 10 Mythic Packs for 2600 gems or 13000 coins. Though it seems that it’s pretty easy to end up buying a bunch of these and completing a whole set, to get the gems or gold needed you need to grind for a very long time, be very good at Standard, Historic, or Alchemy Events, or you have to be a very prolific drafter so you can earn the same number of gems. To do it quickly, and not end up collecting every card by just playing day in and day out for weeks on end during the standard season, most would break down and buy all the gems needed to get all those packs just for the wild cards. Spending money on a free to play game? Some may see it as a good investment for their hobby, but for the sake of this list, it’s 4th simply because it can run a very expensive tab very quickly and therefore is a pretty lackluster route to earning those wild cards. Further down our list, we’ll see a lot more constructive and even fun ways to get these packs without cutting a 50 dollar wedge out of your wallet.

  • Earn 1300 gold (or 260 gems
  • Purchase Mythic Packs in the Store
  • Open at your leisure. If you have multiple packs of the same kind you can open all of them at one time by hitting “Open All”

3. Simply Opening Lots and Lots of Packs!

Crack packs in bulk! That way your wild card stacks grow without peeling through hundreds of them daily.

Perhaps the most fair method of getting wildcards is simply popping open a pack and opening up a wild card! There’s always a slim chance to open a wildcard in a pack, but the more of that pack's specific set you already have 4 copies of in your collection the more chances you get for wildcards. So if you ever feel like ending up with a ton of wildcards, start cracking reward packs. Get your arena codes in, if you’re not too on the ranked events scene, spend your daily gold. It’s always going to be the most reliable way, though it does take some time, however it was expedited with the help of the number 2 slot on today’s list.

  • Earn a lot of gold or gems, or just pay for gems if you have a budget.
  • OR Get promo codes and arena pack codes to redeem in the store
  • Go into the store and pick packs you want and buy! Usually best to buy a bunch at a time more than one or two. Bundle and bulk deals are always available.
  • Go crack some packs open!

2.  The Almighty Wild Card Wheel

Wheel! Of! Wild Cards!

The Wild Card Wheel is a mechanic in MTG Arena that tracks the number of packs you’ve opened without a wild card in it. Each rarity, common, uncommon, rare, and mythic, have separate tracks. Commons pop up way faster than mythics or rares, and then uncommons are a once-in-a-while roll. This method is very much married to the previous entry in that in the packs you randomly pop open, you sometimes just hit a wildcard. However, for the packs that don’t have such luck, you still get progression in game that gives you a wildcard for each pack you crack, speeding up the collection process. It’s reliable, but this and our 3rds slot do either take time and patience, or a lot of monetary investment if you’re not so patient. There is only one path that seems to fast-track collecting better than any other method.

  • Just as before, this works if you just get packs! The more you open the more the wheel opens. Very simple, not a whole lot of frills to worry over.

1. Draft! Draft Like Your Life Depends on It!

Easy math! 15 cards is a lot more than 7, therefore you collect more cards from one draft pack than a normal Arena pack!

Draft is the premier path to unlocking each and every one of the previous entries while also accelerating the process on its own by simple logic and math. When you draft, you don’t open normal Arena packs, you open 15-card draft boosters on the digital client, and then pick a card from the pack and pass it along to build a deck. This format is always ranked and usually costs a considerable amount of in-game currency to enter, but you always get more cards per pack, but here’s the kicker. There are no wild cards in draft boosters. Instead, what drafting does is set your actual card yield to turbo speed, and if you learn the draft format well enough you eventually start drafting the same commons and uncommons, or even the same rare and mythics pretty often. What this does is open up something called the Vault progress. Not visible on the MTGA client interface, the Vault is a progression that tracks how many of each and every card you own in a set. The more you draft the same cards over and over, the more that the vault shows you have in excess of the 4 card maximum the client allows of any 1 card. And each time you do that, you earn more wildcards, not to mention you just open more cards at a time, completing a collection of a set faster so that you get even more chances for wildcards from normal pack openings and daily win rewards. It’s not easy, drafting is the most skill-based form of magic there is and is highly competitive, however it is a lot of fun, very helpful to players so they learn to build decks out on the fly, and even if you don’t often win, you can earn your daily and weekly quest rewards, drop in, earn some cards and just keep moving along, using each of these other methods en tandem to make the most out of your collecting experience.

  • Get enough gold or gems to get into a draft. Premiere or Traditional is totally fine, both are fun and exciting, but also challenging.
  • Join a draft, and start deck building
  • Try to look for duplicates in the draft. Not only are they good for deck building purposes.
  • If you draft a lot from the same set, you’ll end up with a lot more of the same cards, and vault progress goes up much quicker.
