10. Poochyena
What a cute dog…!
- It can be caught early on.
- Mightyena (its evolution) can be a fairly decent Pokémon.
- It's easy to catch.
Poochyena isn’t a great Pokémon when compared to others of the same type, but it is an easy catch in the beginning of the game. Since it’s so early, it would be good for a new player.
9. Seedot
It’s very easy to tell where it gets its namesake from!
- It can be caught early on.
- It is an early grass type, and while it doesn’t have access to the best moves, it evolves decently early.
- It could be useful at the first gym.
- Upon evolution, it becomes a dual type of grass and dark.
Seedot is a decent grass type that can be caught early on. It isn’t perfect, but it can be useful when it evolves.
8. Wurmple
This thing’s pretty cute!
- It evolves very early on, and is fully evolved by level 10.
- It can be caught extremely early on.
- It is easy to catch and has a high catch rate.
- It can evolve into two different forms, which is a fun surprise.
Wurmple itself is not the strongest, but the fact that it appears so early on and can evolve so early makes it really decent for a new player to try and use.
7. Wingull
What a cute bird!
- It can be caught early on.
- It covers two HMs, both fly and surf.
- Pelipper, its evolved form, can be a really decent Pokémon, especially with the ability “drizzle.”
- Its early dual typing would be useful for a beginner to learn how types work.
Wingull is a decent early Pokémon, and upon evolving it, it can become even more useful. I feel it could be useful for a new player.
6. Taillow
This is kind of just a normal bird, huh?
- It can be caught early on.
- It is an easy to get flying type, and it is useful for the fly HM.
- Its evolution, Swellow, is a pretty good Pokémon.
- It evolves at a fairly early level. That level being 22.
Taillow is a flying type that can be caught early on in the game. , Since it is so early, you have an HM covered already . Swellow is a good Pokémon as well.
5. Zigzagoon
It’s so fluffy!
- It can be caught very early on.
- It can learn almost every HM needed in this game (there are a lot of them).
- Its pickup ability can be really useful for getting items.
- It is easy to catch, and it can be found almost anywhere in the game.
Zigzagoon is looked down upon for being one of those early Pokémon, but it can be a really good and worthwhile Pokémon. Since its ability helps with getting items, I feel that makes it good for new players.
4. Ralts
The little guy’s got a cute hat...
- It can be caught early on.
- Its dual typing of fairy and psychic makes this Pokémon really good.
- It has two possible final evolutions. Those forms are Gallade and Gardevoir .
- It is a bit hard to find, but can be worth it.
Ralts has a very low appearance rate, but because of the search function on the DexNav in Omega Ruby, if you have already seen a Pokémon you can search for it. By the time you can catch Ralts, you will have already seen one, so you can use that to search for one.
3. Torchic
What a cute chicken!
- It is one of the starter Pokémon.
- It is unfortunately not the best for the first gym, unless you evolved it beforehand.
- Fire/Fighting is a very solid type for when it evolves.
- You receive its mega-stone from a character in-game.
Finally, on to the starter Pokémon of Hoenn. These Pokémon are meant to be for beginners , so they’re great for new players. Torchic is probably the hardest for a new player due to the first gym’s typing, but it is really useful as the game progresses.
2. Treecko
What a cool design!
- It is one of the three starter Pokémon.
- You get its mega-stone easily if you pick this Pokémon.
- It is very useful for the first gym.
- It does not have a dual type unless mega-evolved, making it easy to learn how to use.
A very easy to obtain Pokémon and a good Pokémon to start with. That is what starter Pokémon are made for. Treecko, and its evolutions, are good Pokémon.
1.Mudkip
What a silly-looking little guy...
- It is one of the starter Pokémon
- Water/Ground makes for a good dual-typing upon its evolution.
- It is very good for the first gym.
- Its mega-stone is easy to acquire, due to the fact that it is given to you as the game progresses.
Mudkip works very well for the first gym, which I feel is probably one of the bigger hurdles for a new player in any Pokémon game. Mudkip’s dual typing allows it to be fairly useful in later gyms too.
As long as they try, any Pokémon works fine for a new player.. These are just some ideas as to what might be useful for a new player.
