Zeus – God of Thunder and apparently board games

We love playing games and telling epic stories. Why not combine these two activities together? Grab friends and family and immerse yourself in the vast world of mythology board games.

If you don't know where to start, don't worry. I will present to you the top 10 best mythology board games ideal for your table.

10. In the Name of Odin

Get ready to raid

What is this game about?

Jump into medieval Europe from the Viking era and become the greatest jarl world has ever seen. Build your village, go on raids and hire mythological heroes. Even though this game has only mythological themes, the atmosphere of snowy and fierce Viking life is very vivid. What stands out to me is the great graphical design of the game and richly decorated cards and board. Furthermore, with the box, you get a full set of miniatures to complete this deal. In terms of gameplay In the Name of Odin is a very friendly and easy to pick up game. A clear set of rules and short games make it great for a family evening.  I recommend this to anybody who likes Norse games and wants fun and simple game.

9. Risk Godstorm

Gotta conquer this world

What is this game about?

Witness the clash of gods. Choose one of the 5 races (Greek, Celtic, Babylonian, Norse, and Egyptian) and lead them to dominate the ancient world and underworld. To do this you will need to gather your forces, dominate continents, acquire relics of power and call your Gods to earth. The first twist that I adore about this game is having Atlantis as one of the continents. It adds more depth and risk to conquering it because one cataclysm can drown everybody there. The second is that death doesn't stop your troops from fighting. After the defeat, they are sent out to the underworld where they can continue to fight for their supremacy. Get ready to gather your friends and put an end to the dispute which is the best culture.

8. Santorini

This seemingly peaceful island isn't what it looks like...

What is this game about?

Take part in one of the strangest races you could have imagined. Take control of a builder that has one job – build a 3 story building and get inside. What makes it interesting is the option to only build or move at your turn. You will be surprised how deep this seemingly simple game can become. What's best is that anybody can play Santorini from an elementary school kid to a strategy game expert. To make things even more interesting, builders can choose from up to 30 heroic and godly powers that heavily alter the gameplay, adding one more layer of complexity to this tactical game.

7. Rising Sun

Time to become shogun

What is this game about?

Experience the legendary world of fantasy feudal Japan. As the Kami (forgotten and powerful creatures) descend from the heavens disappointed by the rule of Shogun, it is up to each player to lead their clan to victory. Use politics to further your cause, negotiate to seek the most profitable alliances, worship the Kami to gain their favour, recruit monsters out of legends to strengthen your forces, and use your resources wisely to be victorious in battle. I wholeheartedly recommend this game to anybody who loves medieval era Japan. You won't be disappointed.

6. Crossroads of Heroes

Beware of aggressive snow leopard

What is this game about?

Become a martial arts hero hailing from one of the five most venerated sects of Chinese Wuxia. You start the game as a noble character who seeks to gain fame and become the next Grand Master of Wulin. However, during your journey, you need to watch out. If you use too many dark paths you will forever become corrupted by darkness. You will also be able to train in ancient martial arts techniques, fight in duels, employ stratagems, search for food and items, and travel the Jianghu in hopes of gaining an upper hand over your rivals. What I really like about this game is the decisions you have to make. Apart from winning you need to decide which path you will follow – good or evil.

5. Yggdrasil Chronicles

Oh no... Surtr is climbing the World Tree again

What is this game about?

Become Norse gods and protect the World Tree at all costs. Keep evil forces from devastating the nine worlds, destroying the World Tree Yggdrasil and surviving the onset of Ragnarök. You work together to keep enemies from destroying the World Tree. What I love about this game is a 3D board that represents all 9 worlds of Norse mythology. On each turn, the enemy is revealed, if he has already been revealed he makes his action for example moves to another world. You need to plan how to stop them and where you can take risks. Get ready to cooperate and stop the world from ending.

4. Ankh: Gods of Egypt

I will show you who is the real God here

What is this game about?

Set your foot in ancient Egypt and become a god. You will compete to survive as society begins to forget the old ways so that only you and your followers remain. Build caravans, summon monsters, and convert followers in your quest to become the supreme leader of this world. What stroke me about this game is the level of detail on various miniatures that have been reimagined from gods, thought monsters to common people. All of this will make you feel like the god you are. What I love about Ankh is that all gameplay including combat is streamlined and non-random. It truly puts you in the place of the ancient god that will reign over this world.

3. Blood Rage

To the Valhalla!

What is this game about?

The end of the world is here. Ragnarok has come. But don't worry. We are Vikings and that will be a piece of cake for us. Take control of one of the 4 clans that battle to get the honour to sit with Odin in Valhalla. Face various mystical monsters, pillage settlements and fight battles. The beautiful and colourful board makes it apocalyptic setting even more memorable and I still didn't talk about miniatures. You won't find such beautiful and detailed minis in any other game on the market. So stop waiting and fight for your glory till Ragnarok comes.

2. Cyclades

Move that Kraken from my island!

What is this game about?

Conquest ancient archipelago with the help of gods. Take control of the Greek polis and take part in the race to build two metropolises. Use monsters and your armies to rip victory from enemy hands and take all glory for yourself. Seek help from divine powers using an auction mechanic that forces you to plan all your moves in advance to get what you want. Simple rules make it ideal for a friendly game night but the complexity of mechanics allows for great skill expression. Without a doubt, the best board game rooted in Greek myths.

1. Teotihuacan: City of Gods

Pyramid of the Sun wasn't built in a day

What is this game about?

Witness the Aztec empire in all its glory. Take control of the group of workers who have one goal – finish the magnificent Pyramid of the Sun. While managing their workforce and resources, develop new technologies, climb the steps of the three great temples, build houses for the inhabitants of the city, and raise the legendary and breath-taking Pyramid of the Sun in the centre of the city. Each game is played in three eras. As the dawn of the Aztecs comes closer, your efforts (and your ability to feed their workforce) are evaluated to find a winner. For me, this is the best board game that I have ever played. It has everything my heart desires: a strong economic foundation, deep mechanics and an interesting setting. You must give it a try.
