[Top 5] D&D Best Warlock Builds You Should Try

D&D Best Warlock Builds

So, you checked online or in the D&D Player’s Handbook, and decided you want to play a Warlock in your next adventure. This class would be exciting and fun to play based on the Warlock’s backstory and the available spells!  (Plus, the awesome Eldritch Blast cantrip is a bonus.)

The D&D Player’s Handbook states that “through pacts made with mysterious beings of supernatural power, warlocks unlock magical effects both subtle and spectacular.”  For Warlocks to be excellent spellcasters, cooperation and negotiation are key.  Read on to find out more about the best Warlock Builds to create a fantastic character!

5. Half-Elven Warlock

According to the D&D Player’s Handbook, “walking in two worlds but truly belonging to neither, half-elves combine what some say are the best qualities of their elf and human parents: human curiosity, inventiveness, and ambition tempered by the refined senses, love of nature, and artistic tastes of the elves.”  Since half-elves are part of both worlds, as Warlocks, they would have access to elven deities, including Feywild, and other entities to make pacts. Read on to find out details about creating the best Half-Elven Warlock build!

Build Details:

  • Half-elves would make excellent Warlocks because their Charisma ability scores automatically increase by +2. (Warlocks need a lot of Charisma to schmooze with otherworldly beings for magical powers!)
  • Also, Half-elves increase two ability scores by 1. I recommend using these for Constitution and Intelligence.
  • The D&D Player’s Handbook mentions using the charlatan background, if possible.
  • The best cantrips to use are Eldritch Blast and Chill Touch. The best 1st level spells are charm person and witch bolt.
  • Keep in mind that Half-Elves have the gift of Darkvision, so they can cast cantrips and spells in places where sight would pose a hindrance.

4. Paladin/Warlock

The Paladin/Warlock combo would be fun to play, because in 5e, the Paladin does not necessarily have to have a lawful good alignment.(Like just about everything else, that is ultimately up to your Dungeon Master (DM) to allow this multiclass combination.)  However, in Paladins, there is usually a source of power of divination of some sort, so combining that with finding outside sources of power to play a Warlock The magical sources, I believe, would have to complement rather than contrast. Can you imagine being able to cast the Aura of Protection along with Eldritch Blast? Read on to find out more about this unique build!

Build Details:

  • To play a Paladin/Warlock, the PC must have ability scores of at least 13 for Strength and Charisma. (Fortunately, both the Paladin and Warlock need high Charisma scores, so only two ability scores need to be high.)
  • Concerning Proficiencies, Paladin/Warlocks have light armor, simple weapons, shields, simple weapons, and martial weapons.
  • Paladins should play a noble background, if possible.

3. Sorlock

After doing research, this is a build I plan on creating with a new character. The multiclass combination of the Sorcerer having inherited magical abilities from ancestors and the Warlock making pacts with other supernatural beings will make this multiclass PC almost unstoppable! There are several methods in which you can build a Sorlock. Read on to find out more!

Build Details:

  • To play a Sorlock, the PC must have ability scores of at least 13 in Charisma for both Sorcerer and Warlock. (That’s a two-for-one deal!) The Constitution ability score should be high as well, but not required.
  • Concerning Proficiencies, Sorlocks have access to light armor and simple weapons.
  • Cantrips that would be useful from the Sorcerer’s side are light, prestidigitation, ray of frost, and shocking grasp.
  • Spells that would be helpful are shield and magic missile.

2. Tiefling Warlock

The D&D’s Player’s Handbook states that “to be greeted with stares and whispers, to suffer violence and insult on the street, to see mistrust and fear in every eye: this is the lot of the tiefling.” As intense and outcast beings cursed with the legacy of Asmodeus in the D&D 5e universe, Tieflings are hardwired to become excellent Warlocks. Read on to find out why Tieflings would make awesome Warlocks!

Build Details:

  • The Tiefling race brings +1 to their intelligence ability score and a +2 to their charisma ability score, so the Tiefling Warlock would be a natural fit. (They have an advantage on Charisma, which is what is needed to become a Warlock.)
  • Also, Tieflings already have some demon blood in their DNA, so making magical contracts with an entity and/or deity would not be a far stretch.
  • Like Half-Elves, Tieflings also have the gift of Darkvision, so they can cast cantrips and spells in places where sight would be a hindrance.
  • The best cantrips to use are Eldritch Blast and Chill Touch. The best 1st level spells are charm person and witch bolt.

1.Warlock/Wizard

This multiclass Warlock/Wizard build would be legendary, but the PC would need to have high ability scores to create a stellar character. The combination of the research skills to learn spells and the charm to negotiate with other entities would make for a powerful character and fun for roleplaying purposes. Read on to find out more about the Warlock/Wizard build!

Build Details:

  • For a PC to become a Warlock/Wizard, they must have at least a 13 in Charisma, and a 13 in Intelligence. In addition, it is also recommended that the Warlock/Wizard have high Constitution and Dexterity scores.
  • The Warlock/Wizard proficiencies include light armor and simple weapons.
  • The best cantrips to use on the Warlock side are Eldritch Blast and Chill Touch. Also, the best cantrips to use for Wizards are Mage Hand, Light, and Ray of Frost.
  • The best 1st level spells for Warlocks are Charm Person and Witch Bolt.
  • For the Wizard part of this build, the D&D Player’s Handbook recommends using the sage background.
