DOTA 2's item shop has hundreds of items with varying costs available for purchase. While some cost chump change, like Boots and Iron Branches, not all items are created equal. If you're looking to buy a Manta Style or Divine Rapier, which cost thousands of gold, it's not really practical to save up all that necessary gold.
In DOTA 2, you don't need to walk around with a heavy purse. DOTA 2 lets you build items, slowly gathering their components to reach the goal.
Here's how you can build items in DOTA 2.
Step 1: Open the Item Shop.
You can't buy Items without opening the Shop. Just press the hotkey (F4 by default) or press the Shop button on the bottom right of your screen.
You'll see a new menu pop up with all the items you can buy.
Step 2: Check Item recipes and identify components
In DOTA 2, most Items aren't standalone. You can buy smaller Items, slowly building up to the more expensive ones.
Each Item has a recipe, the combination of smaller, cheaper Items that make it up. You can see each Item's recipe by left-clicking the Item in the shop panel. You'll find a small tree-like figure on the left under recommended Items.
For example, the recipe for a Battle Fury asks for a Broadsword, a Claymore, a Perseverance, and a Quelling Blade.
So you can build the Item by buying its components as soon as you've got the money.
This video explains the basics of Items in DOTA 2.
