Whether it’s helping your friends escape from zombies, hiding in the dark from monsters, or braving jumpscares, horror games are a great adrenaline rush. 

10. No More Room in Hell

First on this list is the game that started as a Half Life 2 mod, No More Room in Hell. This game takes place during the zombie apocalypse, and your only objective is to survive.

This game’s zombies are just downright grotesque. Taking inspiration from American Psycho and other classic slasher flicks, No More Room in Hell’s writing and minimal graphics makes it feel like you’re going through the world once teeming with life, barely clinging to hope. It’s fast paced, action driven, and overall a heart-thumping, breath stopping experience.

And it’s multiplayer! You can play with your friends and try to survive the apocalypse together, or do what I do, and hunt each other down. The choice is all yours to make.

9. Secret Neighbor

Who can you trust? One of your friends has been kidnapped by a deranged neighbor, and now you have to help bust them out of the creepy basement! Easy enough, right?

Except, there is a twist in Secret Neighbor. One of your friends will randomly be playing as the neighbor in disguise! This makes for a fun setup each time with the promise of randomized terror, and the replayability of this game is very high.

If you were a fan of Hello Neighbor, this is precisely that, but multiplayer. Stealth and puzzles make for endless possibilities being both the hunter and the prey in Secret Neighbor. The full game’s release is scheduled for sometime this year.

The children wait outside of the insane neighbor’s house, wary to start looking for their kidnapped friend.

8. 7 Days to Die

After World War III, the country is in ruins. In rural Arizona, a few survivors cling onto hope while battling hordes of mutated undead.

Multiplayer zombie survival games are the hot new experience right now, and for good reason: They’re immensely fun to play. This game’s two modes, survival and creative, are worth several hours worth of replay and exploration.

A zombie game set in this day and age with the real possibility of WWIII makes for an interesting setting, and the graphics don’t look half bad either.

Zombies shuffle towards the player characters! At least the trees look nice, though.

The old dusty feeling of the hot Arizona desert is portrayed well in this map.

7. Deceit

Can you blatantly lie to your friends? This multiplayer game tests the limits of truth and well, deceit.

One player is infected, and they must lie to the others until either the rest are all dead or infected too, which is more difficult than it seems. You’ve got plenty of ways to draw out one friend from the crowd, but getting away with it in good conscience is another obstacle.

If you think you’ve got the guts and wits to outsmart your friends, then this multiplayer one against many game is just right for you. It’s like an advanced version of the game ‘mafia,’ except you get to carry out the kill!

The infected team mate’s goals vary differently than everyone else’s. Can this killer carry out the deaths of those around them?

The scenery in Deceit is eerie, unsettling, and downright spooky.

6. Killing Floor 2

This sequel to the first Killing Floor is more gruesome, unforgivable, and brutal than its predecessor! How long can you survive against the hordes of Zed hungry for your flesh?

The most challenging part of this sequel is without a doubt, the intense boss fights. This multiplayer first person shooter has improved on the class system of the first Killing Floor and with its updated graphics, it’s no wonder it’s so high up on the list.

To call it fast paced would be something of a misnomer. It’s high octane, adrenalyn pumping, and addictive. Sort of like going bungee jumping for the first time.

Eww! This skinned zombie enemy is both gross and viscious.

Sort of like Dead Space but, uh, more gory. Somehow.

5. Five Nights at Freddy’s

A newspaper advertises an easy job for good money - All you have to do is keep watch over a few inanimate animatronics inside of a pizzeria. Oh, except … they’re alive, and bloodthirsty.

This game took the internet by storm when it came out, and for good reason: Five Nights at Freddy’s is an intense and gripping single player experience. What works the best here is not only the atmosphere, but also the sound design. Jumpscares ahead!

The design of the animatronics is creepy, the setting is unbelievably harrowing, and the amount of strategy that goes into surviving all five nights at Freddy Fazbear’s makes this game complex, and replayable. You’ll certainly never look at animatronics the same way again, that’s for sure.

Who designs an animatronic with teeth?! Chica the chicken looks hungry, but I wouldn’t let her in if I were you.

Bonnie the Bunny makes his way down to the main office to … well, I’m not sure I want to know what his plans are, thank you very much.

4. Left 4 Dead 2

The mother of all zombie apocalypse games returns to the consoles in this fun and mod friendly first person shooter, with a whole new cast of characters and unique maps.

This is the zombie game that really defined a whole generation of first person apocalyptic shooters. It’s the first of the first, and even with its now dated graphics, it’s insanely fun to play with a bunch of friends.

In my opinion, the best thing about Left 4 Dead 2 is the unreal amount of modifications to your game you can put in. You want your Tank (specialized class zombie) to play Thomas the Tank Engine music when it charges? Why not! Check out all of the different mods available on the Steam workshop, you won’t regret it.

Look out! This zombie’s still coming at you! The carnival background doesn’t help either.

That’s a whole lot of zombie. Let’s hope the survivors can escape!

3. Friday the 13th

He’s back, he’s angry, and he’s bloodthirsty. Jason Voorhees’ return to the forefront of horror games makes his debut in Friday the 13th: The Game.

A classic slasher film turned video game, this mutliplayer puzzle and slasher style game’s main feature is that one of your friends is Jason and the rest are the teens he’s hunting under the moonlight! It takes a lot of inspiration from the film series, and combining teamwork with hair-raising character deaths makes for fun playthroughs every time.

This game … is gory. There’s really no other way to describe it, each death that you can cause as Jason is filled with blood, guts, and gore. If you have a strong enough stomach, feel free to hunt down your local group of teens in the woods!

This poor teen got mutilated … just when they were on the brink of escape, too.

2. Dead by Daylight

Following with the trend of teens being murdered in the woods, Dead by Daylight pits you against your friends in a game of cat and murderer.

This game’s graphics, playstyle, and puzzles combined with the very real threat of the monstrous murderer stalking and killing the other player characters makes Dead by Daylight not only intense, but also harrowing.

The setting is creepy, the different and varying monsters ranging from psychopathic killers to actual monsters are terrifying, and the generator puzzles make for each second you take on them adrenalyn inducing. How long can you survive?

She’d better run faster if she wants to outrun this axe wielding maniac.

1. Hunt: Showdown

This gritty first person shooter looks and plays like an old Western film, and that’s partly why it’s so fun and easy to get into.

Hunt: Showdown is a Co-Op game and your goal is to kill all the demons on different gloomy looking maps centered around the swamps of the deep south. The maps are huge and expansive, the gameplay is fluid.

You’ve also got a myriad of customization additions to your player character, so if you want to quite literally be Sherlock Holmes sniping demons, that’s entirely up to you. There’s demons to slay and mysteries to unfurl, so tip your hat up and get to shootin’, partner.

This final boss looking demon’s sure to put up a fight.

Hmm … hatchet versus a demon … okay then! Go for it!
