10. Sell Burial Certificates (best for early game)
One of the first mechanisms players are introduced to at the start of the game is burying corpses and receiving Burial Certificates. This is an item that will be regularly awarded to the player each time they bury or cremate a corpse, but won't be awarded if a corpse is disposed of in the nearby river.
Horadric is the NPC innkeeper at The Dead Horse and the husband of Miss Chain. He is obligated by an ancient contract to purchase your Burial certificates for the constant price of 1 Silver Coin and 50 Copper Coins. The price of Burial Certificates will stay the same throughout the game.
How it works:
- For a while, corpses will regularly show up at the mortuary, delivered by Donkey. After the player progresses in their quest line, they will have to prepay Donkey 10 carrots before they can get any more corpses.
- Extra corpses and corpses with too many red skulls to give a good graveyard rating can be cremated. In order to cremate corpses, players have to unlock the crematorium technology. This tech is unlocked in the theology tech tree under the graves category.
- They will then be able to cremate corpses south of the mortuary. Burning corpses produces important materials, including 1 Burial certificate; 2 Salt; and 5 Ash.
- Materials required to create a place for burning corpses: 8 Wood billets and 1 Corpse
9. Harvest Wood and Stone
Stone and wood are important materials used throughout the game. In the beginning, while most of these materials will be kept for crafting recipes, there will be some in-between time of needing to collect tech points to increase their skills, which will make it good to keep harvesting wood and stone to be sold. Unfortunately, stacks of them can’t be sold back to the villagers, as they can only hold so much, but every few days players can sell a couple of pieces to get a little bit of Copper coins.
How it works:
- A technique is to sell around 3-6 pieces, wait 3 days, and then sell until the villagers run out of money.
- Sell the Stone to Corey, the engineer found in the far northwestern part of The Village and north of the Beekeeper. He will also purchase processed stone and marble, such as polished bricks and carved pieces of stone and marble.
- Sell the firewood to Tress and other villagers like the Innkeeper and the Beekeeper. Tress is the carpenter of The Village and Cory's brother. He is found directly north of the Dead Horse. He will also buy other wood products, such as wood repair kits, beams, planks, and more.
8. Farming
Graveyard Keeper can’t be a simulation game without some farming! In this game, there are designated areas for growing vegetable crops, fruit, and even a vineyard. Not only is farming a way to sustain players' energy and health but the produce can also be sold and used in food crafting recipes, which will be discussed further below. Some crops grow without a quality rating, such as carrots and cabbage, but several crops do have a rating that affects the energy levels they provide as well as the quality rating of cooked foods.
The kitchen garden is located directly south of the workyard and requires permission before use. There are a few steps to follow in order to unlock it.
How it works:
- First, read the sign in the north at the blueprint table, which tells you to apply to Horadric the Innkeeper for it. Speak with him to gain access to the Farming Technologies. He will give you a Garden certificate, which can be used at the blueprint table in the kitchen garden. Using it allows you to claim the property, but at the moment, you can only craft an empty garden bed.
- Next, talk to the Merchant on Gluttony Day about the garden and make a deal with him. Your choice affects the direction of the quest line you will take. After that, go to the Farmer to buy some seeds and get started with your farm!
- Fertilizers will be required by players in order to create high-quality crops. At first, the only available fertilizer is Peat, which is created at a Compost heap using crop waste. Using it will add a little bit of quality rating and increase growth time. Crops will only grow to Copper quality with Peat. Using alchemical technologies will provide you with silver and gold-quality fertilizers, allowing you to produce silver and gold-quality crops and seeds for even more money.
- For a few copper coins, the Farmer will buy a couple of Beets, Cabbage, Carrots, and Flour. He will also buy Firewood.
- The Miller will buy Wheat, Flour, and Hops of all quality ratings and their seeds.
7. Fishing
The Fishing Mechanism in Graveyard Keeper has a sort of minigame aspect to it. There are different types of fish available to discover, with the chance percentage changing depending on the type of fishing rod they have, if players have bait, and the bait quality. Fishing is unlocked after interacting with the Fisherman at the Lighthouse.
How it works:
- Get started by talking to the fisherman at Lighthouse, and then he will ask for six Moths in exchange for a simple fishing rod. Moths can be acquired after unlocking the Insect technology. Moths are a good source of fishing bait. The quest can be passed by purchasing a rod from the Fisherman.
- Once that quest is complete and players acquire the fishing rod, they can go fishing at one of five locations. There is a spot west of the graveyard at the waterfall, one in the village behind the house selling eggs, and one at the river, swamp, and sea. Now you can sell the fish to the fisherman.
- You can sell whole fish, frogs, firewood, and simple and good fishing rods to the fisherman, and though he has an interest in Moths and Maggots, he will not purchase them.
- Selling goldfish is particularly profitable, as the odds are to catch one fish per two lures. It gives a net profit of 27 Silver Coins and 50 Copper Coins, plus 19 tuna.
6. Perform Weekly Sermons (Early to Late)
Upon arriving at the Church graveyard for the first time, the Bishop will acknowledge you as the new graveyard keeper. He asks you to improve the graveyard to a 5-Graveyard Rating, and after doing so, he will give you the Preacher Perk, allowing you to hold sermons in the local church and gain access to the alchemy lab and the study table in the cellars.
The church starts with a base 3 Church Rating and in the beginning, the casual prayer you are given for free will be the only one you can perform reliably. Holding sermons in the church once each Pride day is the main method of collecting Faith as well as a source of money. The church and graveyard ratings affect the amount of money and Faith collected after a sermon, with the graveyard rating being the most important for donations. Because of this, it’s highly desirable to have as high a graveyard rating as possible.
How it works:
- Improve the Graveyard: Four factors affect the graveyard quality: bushes, corpses, decor, and graves. The quality of a buried Corpse determines the maximum rating per grave, with the number of red, green, and white Skulls in the corpse rating being the basis of the quality. So it's recommended to increase the rating by crafting decor including things like lanterns, urns with ashes, flower beds, prayer stations, etc. Each piece of decor adds some amount of Graveyard Rating. The fence around the graveyard can be upgraded twice, adding a total of +30 ratings.
- Other things to craft to increase the rating are grave fences, gravestones, and sculptures, all of which have unlockable technologies that increase in quality.
- Improve the Church: The church can be upgraded twice, first to a Big Church, then to a Cathedral, by talking to the Bishop at Pride and following his questline. For each step, you'll need to meet a minimum Graveyard Rating and Church Rating in addition to turning in items. The church rating can be improved by crafting furniture and temporary items to add inside the building. By using candles in candelabra I or II, you can increase the score temporarily and finish the task without having to build an expensive interior.
- Furniture includes Confessionals, Church benches, Incense burners, Candelabras, and Shrines. Temporary effects last for a few hours of the day, temporarily increasing the rating. These are things like candles and incense used in candelabras and incense burners.
- The amount of money you collect in the donation box is determined by the graveyard rating with a bonus from the Church Rating, and also by the type and quality of the sermon performed. Craft sermons that offer buffs and perks beyond the small amount of faith and money the starter sermon offers. A successful sermon creates donations at the base rate of 3 Copper Coins for every 1 Graveyard Rating and will produce Faith at a rate of 1 Faith for every 5 Church Rating ratio.
5. Sell Cooked Food and Processed Items to Villagers
Once recipes are unlocked through various means, players can sell certain quality food items to the Innkeeper and the Merchant. Each week you can only sell a couple of certain food items due to local demand and the villager’s income.
How it works:
- The Innkeeper will purchase some non-quality food as well as Copper and Silver-quality foods. After completing certain quests, players will be able to sell Packaged Meat, which sells for 64 Copper Coins each. A Royal Stamp is needed, which players can get from Snake, who comes to the Dungeon under their house.
- The Merchant will only buy Gold-quality cooked food as he likes decadent foods, aside from one Silver-quality Royal Fish dish.
- The Miller will buy Flour for a small amount, which is great because after fixing his Mill, the Flour can be processed there for free.
4. Brew Wine
Wine-making is a skill learned through the Farning Tech tree after unlocking the Grape Farming skill. In Graveyard Keeper, only Red wine can be created. Red wine is a consumable product that restores a relatively moderate amount of health and a large amount of energy. It's crafted by combining two pails of grape juice of varying qualities in the wine-making barrel. The silver-quality wine is specifically required to complete a number of quests, including a primary quest line involving the Inquisitor.
How it works:
- There is a hatch in the player's home that leads down to the Cellar, which is the starting point for making Wine and other alcoholic beverages. At the cellar workbench, players will be able to craft the Vine press, which is used to extract juices from fruits as well as hemp and fat oil.
- To craft 1 Quality Pail of Grape Juice you need 15 Quality Grapes, and two Pails are needed to make one batch of 20 Red wines. The Winemaking barrel is used to brew the wine. 12 flitch, 5 simple iron components, and 7 nails are required for one barrel.
- Zombie-winery is a crafting station that may be built in the cellar after unlocking the Zombie-winery technology. A zombie can operate at this station to produce twice as much red wine or 40 bottles. This workstation has a pre-designated location in the top-left corner of the cellar, with the Zombie Brewery in the opposite corner.
3. Process Ores
Graveyard Keeper has several types of ores that can be collected and harvested through mining. Of these, there are a few that are more profitable, either smelted into bars or then crafted into other materials. Most of these items can be sold to the villagers, such as Krezvold the Blacksmith, and the Merchant.
How it works:
- The Blacksmith will buy the most items processed from ores. He will buy both iron ore and iron ingot, steel ingot, graphite, steel parts, nails, simple and complex iron parts
- It is through the Blacksmith that you initially unlock the furnace recipe, so you can start to create iron ingots and gather iron ore.
- Process Silver nuggets at Furnace II or III to create Silver ingot. These are the real money makers, as the Merchant will purchase them for 12 Silver and 25 Copper Coins apiece.
- Process gold to create Gold jewelry details, which are used as a material for other crafting recipes as well as selling for 34 Silver Coins and 23 Copper Coins to the merchant.
2. Selling Food at Witch Burnings
Through the Inquisitor’s Snack Time quest, he asks players to build a buffet tent and sell food and drink for the witch burning. Although it’s a once-a-week event, it’s sure to draw a large crowd who will buy a lot of food! The best way to complete this quest is to stock the tent and host a burning for 2-3 more weeks to earn additional Happiness with the inquisitor, money, and faith.
The tent comes complete with a storage tent, a market stall, and four bar tables for the customers. It has a fixed place on Witch Hill and is only used during the witch burnings.
How it works:
- Only Gold-quality foods and drinks can be sold at the buffet tent. The foods required are 5 Gold-quality Burgers and 10 Gold-quality Beers.
- The required materials to build the tent are 5 Hemp ropes, 15 Wooden planks, and 20 Nails.
- On Wrath Day, visit the Inquisitor to operate the tent and watch the cutscene. You will earn 33 Silver Coins, 4 Faith, and the first time you activate the cutscene, the achievement "Not a hot dog".
- Stock the tent and host a burning three times, until the king forbids burnings and the tent has no use anymore.
1. Trading Office (best for late game)
The Trade Office is a late-game way to earn money as well as continuing with the Merchant’s questline. This is a place where Silver and Gold-quality crops, tools, and other items can be sold in bulk to the Town, making players a pretty penny. The entrance from the village and the hatch from the cellar are both closed until you complete the merchant's quest "Trade Licence".
The Trade Office is located south of the tavern. The entrance is behind the merchant who visits on Gluttony. The merchant will visit at sunset to take crates from the pallets. There is a trade report detailing the money you've earned selling your crates of produce. Silver, gold star, and trade goods crates always sell for the same price, regardless of what produce you package.
How it works:
- To unlock the Office, players first have to get a Trade license which can be bought from the royal services next to the church for 50 Silver Coins. To purchase it, you must first purchase the "Rightful Citizen" status for 3 Silver Coins.
- After bringing the license to the Merchant, he will open up the trade office and ask you to bring a crate of goods each Gluttony for him to sell. These crates are made in the crate factory which will be situated between the Workspace and Kitchen Garden at the player’s home. This means it has access to both sections' storage.
- Players can construct pallets to hold shipments and marketing campaigns inside the office. To obtain Fame for each crate you want to manufacture, you must first launch a marketing campaign. Part of this will include selling 7 crates before proceeding to the next stage of the quest.
- The crate factory is where various items to sell are packed into crates and comes complete with a built-in elevator, pallets, and a porter station in the cellar to place a zombie who will take the crates into the Trade Office. Another zombie can be tasked to work to pack the goods.
