Which axes are the best in The Forest, and how do we get them?
The Forest is a game that changed the landscape of the horror survival genre. Among the reasons for its success is that it provides you with a variety of weapons to make your survival and finding your boy (dubbed Timmy by the community) more interesting and fun.
And the weapons that are most synonymous with The Forest are its axes. There are quite a few axes in The Forest and each one has its own damage and best use. However, any new player to the game could find it quite a hassle to find all of these axes and learn the tasks that suit each one of them. But we don’t want you to feel that way. So, let’s talk about the best axes in The Forest and how to get them.
5) Machete
I know! I know! It’s not an axe, it’s a Machete! But, just hear me out on this one. Even though the Machete is one of the shortest melee weapons in The Forest, and from a normal perspective, it’s basically nothing close to an axe in real life. In The Forest, the Machete technically works and plays just like the axes in the game.
- You can chop down trees with it (I know! Right?) in as many hits as the plane axe, which is 17 hits.
- You can use the machete to cut down stick trees, bushes, and shrubs in only one hit. This gives you the advantage of gathering sticks way faster.
- It does 23 damage hit points. It packs a punch more than the Chainsaw, the Molotov, and the Katana.
- It’s the fastest weapon that classifies as an axe in the game.
- It has an equal block rate to the Katana.
- You can always upgrade the machete to add more speed, damage, and give it some poison damage.
You will find the machete at the bottom of the sinkhole. It might seem difficult at first, but hey, there are many ways to go there.
The best way to reach the bottom of the sinkhole is to go through Cave 7. You will end up opening a couple of sacrificial doors. The second door will open straight to the bottom of the sinkhole. Or, you could always use the more direct way by jumping with the Glider, and spinning as you fly down to avoid hitting the walls on your way down. (It’s all worth it if you want to feel like Danny Trejo.)

4) Plane Axe
It’s neither the coolest looking axe in The Forest, nor is it the strongest. But it’s the closest thing to a companion that you get in the game.
- This little red tool of salvation will stick by your side since day one in The Forest.
- You can chop down trees with it in 17 hits.
- You can use the plane axe to cut down stick trees, bushes, and shrubs.
- Even though it deals slightly less damage than the machete, the plane axe could be upgraded to deal more damage than most melee weapons in the game (with the right combination).
- You can combine it with cloth and light it on fire to add burning damage.
- You can use it to open suitcases and break effigies.
- You can use the plane axe to kill starving cannibals in 4-6 hits, and more powerful cannibals in 8-12 hits.
- The plane axe is the only weapon that you can paint in The Forest (Plane Axe+Orange/Red Paint).
You don’t need to do anything to find the Plane Axe in The Forest (not that you need me to tell you that). You’ll basically get it on your way out of the plane at the beginning of the game.

3) Crafted Axe
No matter how many survival games you’ve played, no matter how many weapons you’ve crafted, wielding this bad boy in The Forest will always be one of the most immersive experiences that you’ll get.
- The Crafted Axe works and plays the same as every other axe in The Forest.
- It’s the slowest of all axes in The Forest, but it has the second-highest block-level out of all of them.
- It has the farthest reach out of all axes in the game.
- You can chop down trees with it in 13 hits.
- You can always upgrade it for speed and strength, and combine it with Cloth to light it on fire and add burning damage.
- It has one of the highest block levels out of all weapons in the game, second only to the Rusty Axe.
There are two ways to obtain the Crafted Axe in The Forest. The usual way, and the fun way. You can either craft it - the resources that you’ll need to craft the Crafted Axe are easy to find - Or, you can wait till you find a cannibal who has it, and take it from him after killing him (THE FUN WAY).

2) Rusty Axe
A lot of players in The Forest would rather keep this one in their inventory. Those are the ones who favour speed and stamina over everything. But imagine this: you’re surrounded by 4-6 cannibals, and they keep closing in on you by the second. What do you do? You bring out the Rusty Axe.
- It’s needless to say that using the Rusty Axe, you can chop down trees (in 13 hits), you can upgrade it, and you can light it on fire and add burning damage.
- It beats the Crafted Axe in almost everything in The Forest, except for reach (which is the same for both).
- The Rusty Axe has the highest block-level out of all the axes in The Forest – no, no, scratch that – actually, out of all the weapons in The Forest. It blocks 100% of the damage.
You’ll find the Rusty Axe at the end of Cave 5. Because it’s submerged, the easiest way to get there is through its main entrance. You can find it if you walk south from the Film Crew Camp, or west from the Camping Site. These two locations are usually around the plane crash. Progress further into the cave, and you’ll find it in the same area as the Rebreather.

1) Modern Axe
Finally, we get to talk about the Modern Axe. You can get many cool axes in The Forest, but this is as good as it gets. No one could ever deny that The Modern axe is the most prestigious axe in The Forest. It has the looks, speed, and strength.
- You can use the Modern Axe to chop down trees with only 9 hits.
- You can deal 34 damage against enemies with the Modern Axe.
- It has the second-highest block level in The Forest (equal to the Crafted Axe).
- You can use it to knock down Cannibals more often than the other axes in the game.
- Upgrade it and you’ll get up to three times the damage as the Katana.
- Combine it with Cloth to light it on fire and add fire damage.
It might be a bit tricky to get the Modern Axe. But if we’re not going to help you with this, then why would we even talk about this, right?
You’ll find the Modern Axe in Cave 2. This cave is located in the main cannibal village in the south-eastern part of the island. You’ll recognize the cave entrance by a stack of skulls that ends with a cross.
However, the easiest way to get to Cave 2 is to die. (Yes. Die.) The first time you die in a playthrough will trigger a cutscene where the cannibals are dragging you by your legs. Eventually, you wake up hung by the legs in a cave. You’ll find the Plane Axe just below your head. Grab it and cut the ropes.
You’ll need to push into the cave until you find a rope. Climb down, and push even further to reach a large cave room where you’ll find some cannibals scattered around. After you kill them, you will realize that there are three paths out of this cave opening. Choose the leftmost path, and keep going till you find a larger cave opening. The second path to the left is where you want to go. You’ll recognize it by a hanging lantern and a rope. You’ll find a little room full of cardboard boxes at the bottom of the room. And, that’s where you’ll find the Modern Axe.
