Vermintide 2 Red Weapons Guide

Red tier items, or veteran items as I like to call them since it causes plenty of needless confusion, are the highest tier of item you can get, making them somewhat rare. This rarity has left some players too concerned about losing these precious things to experiment with them to learn how they work, that’s what this guide is here for. Everything I know about red items, and one aspect learned through hearsay, can be found here. With this knowledge, perhaps you’ll feel at ease when it comes to re-rolling properties and stuff like that… probably.

How to Get Them

These cherished red items are difficult to get because chance is a primary factor, there is no way to guarantee you’ll get one since you cannot even upgrade an exotic(orange) item to get to the red tier, chests are the only way to get them. As I've experienced, you can find veteran items in the following chests.

  •   Top tier champion chests: As far as I'm aware, you can get red items on champion difficulty, but you'll need to gather tomes and grimoires to get the better chests.
  •   Legend difficulty vaults: I find it much easier to get veteran tier items on legend since you don’t even need tomes and grims, the lowest level vaults still have a chance to give out red items.
  •   Commendation chests: Its rare but possible for commendation chests to contain red items, so even a simple level up can help you get a veteran item.

It appears that legend vaults are the best way to obtain red items. Understandably, legend difficulty makes it hard to win, and your goal is to win in order to get more loot. If you find yourself losing a lot on this mode, then forget tomes and grims for now and focus on completing the level. Speaking of levels, I consider Righteous Stand to be the easiest level so I suggest playing on that one repeatedly, once your comfortable with the challenges of legend, try beating Righteous Stand while carrying tomes and grims.

What’s Special About Red Items

There’s more to veteran items than a different colored border, the properties of red tier items are always at their maximum value, even if you re-roll them, so don’t be afraid to keep re-rolling the properties to get the duo that you like.

An example showing the awesomeness of red items and their max values: If you have an orange tier item with a property you love, attack speed + 5.0 for example, but you don’t really care for the other property and want to re-roll until you get say crit chance + 5%. After a good deal of re-rolling you get the attack speed/crit chance pair that you wanted but the value of the attack speed property is lower than before. With red items, you only need to get the two properties you want and they will always be at the maximum value.

Another sort of unique thing about red items is that some of them have their own illusions that can be extracted and applied just like any other illusion. Now I say sort of unique because many weapons do not get a unique illusion, so don’t get too excited.

Salvaging Red Items

What’s not so special about red items however is the stuff you get for salvaging them, it’s just a greater quantity of what you’d get from salvaging lower tier items. If you get a second copy of a veteran item, keep ‘em both, use one for holding your favorite trait and properties, and the other can be used to experiment with other combinations.

If you get a red tier trinket, do not salvage it for goodness sake! A veteran trinket is a blessing for it can be used by all of your characters simultaneously.

Conclusion

To sum it all up…

  •   Play on the Righteous Stand level on legend to get more red items, picking up tomes and grims to boost your chances.
  •   Don’t be too hasty to get rid of veteran items unless you’re absolutely swimming in them, hold on to them even if their duplicates of a red item you already have so you can play around with the various trait and property options.
  •   Some red items have special illusions that can used on other weapons.
  •   Red items retain the maximum property value even if you re-roll them.
