When a player moves into a new town in the 3DS edition of Animal Crossing, a total of five animal villagers will be residents. The maximum amount of villagers is ten per town. They may move away or stay depending on the town’s conditions or their relationship with the player. This is a list of the ten best villagers in Animal Crossing: New Leaf.

10. Astrid

This snobbish kangaroo is one of the most distinct villagers in the game. She and her child share a teal star embedded in their white fur. Having her roam your village is sure to add a layer of color. She loves rock music and warms toward the player as she becomes acquainted with them. 

Her Japanese name, kuzzu, translates to “kids”. She does carry her child in her pouch.

Overall:

  • Snooty at first.
  • One of the most distinct fur colors.
  • A colorful addition to a village.

9. Buck

Buck is a competitive horse with a Southern accent. He refers to the player as “pardner”. His eyes may suggest an aggressive demeanor but he is loving towards others.

Even though he is a horse, his fur color and hoof color make him appear like a donkey. His house is cluttered with papers and clothing. When at home, he’ll watch programs on his retro television.

  • Loving personality.

  • Competitive.
  • He loves old television shows.

8. Kyle

This wolf oozes self-confidence. He dresses in a biker’s jacket and has a house decorated like a sound booth. The interior of his house is made of steel walls and floors. His preferred song, “K.K. Adventure”, is based on Pirates of the Caribbean.

True to the smug personality types, he will be friendly with the other villagers but will not hesitate to elevate his status. His nickname for the player, “alpha”, is a reference to the superior wolf in a pack.

  • Alpha wolf.

7. Bob

Bob is the Animal Crossing everyman. He has been a villager since the start of the series and was designed by Hisashi Nogami to be the first villager in the entire series.

He has a lazy personality and dons a pink, floral shirt. His days are spent fishing on rivers and eating copious amounts of food. Bob’s lifestyle confuses the neighborhood achievers.

Overall:

  • Lazy eater.
  • Fisher.
  • Everyman.
  • Essential villager.

6. Ruby

Ruby is an albino, peppy rabbit. Her name likely comes from the striking shade of red shown in her eyes. This lucky girl was also born on Christmas Day.

Her personality is marked by peppiness. She can get along with anyone but may annoy the meaner types. She views the older villagers as “boring”.

Overall:

  • Rudy eyes.
  • Christmas birthday.
  • Peppy
  • Gets along with everyone.

5. Hamphrey

This refined, black hamster joined the list of Animal Crossing villagers - along with the entire hamster species - in New Leaf. He is a structured individual who takes tradition seriously.

His home reflects his personality. He has bonsai plants, a tatami bed, and bamboo flooring. His frame quote is “Children should be seen and not heard.”

Overall:

  • Traditional
  • Japanese home.
  • Refined
  • Strong view of children.

4. Biskit

Biskit’s personality is similar to Bob’s. They are both lazy animals who eat and relax. Biskit likes to decorate his home with the cabana series furniture line.

Both of his ears are striped with differing shades of green. His primary fur color is orange.

Biskit likes to call his friends “dawg”.

Overall:

  • Calls his friends “dawg”.
  • Lazy animal.

  • Unique fur color.

3. Coco

Coco is a surreal creature. Her eyes and mouth appear like three black chasms. Her skin has a porcelain appearance. She says, “boing” often.

This rabbit is based on the gyroid figures that are spread across the town. They can be excavated from the ground after rainy days and placed in houses as furniture. 

Coco’s house takes on a tribal setting. Gyroids that resemble her face line the back wall.

To speak of her personality, she is harmonious about her self-image. She accepts her face for how it looks.

  • Bizarre appearance.
  • Self-accepting.
  • Loves gyroids

2. Marshal

Marshal is a squirrel with marshmallow-white fur. A white fringe hands on the top of his head. He likes his coffee to be brewed with Kilimanjaro beans and small helpings of milk and sugar. 

You may not expect it from this squirrel, but Marshal is exceptional at mental math. His demeanor belongs in the smug category.

Overall:

  • Kilimanjaro fan.
  • Marshmallow-esque.
  • Gifted at math.
  • Smug.

1. Lucky

Lucky is one eccentric dog. He leads a lazy life but seems unphased by the web of bandages all over his body. He never alludes to the difficulty of seeing the world through one eye.

His house is inspired by the Egyptian tombs of old.

Overall:

  • Unphased by appearance.
  • Egyptian household.
  • Lazy.
  • Bandages all over face.
