So you’re in the mood to travel space, and maybe kick some alien butt along the way, but you aren’t sure which game you should play.

We’ve all been there, there are so many sci-fi games out there these days. There are some good ones out there, and some rather bad ones.

But look at what I got here! A whole list of excellent games for you to try out!

17. Gears of War 5

The newest member of the Gears of War series is looking to be just as exciting as its predecessors.  Mow down familiar enemies in this exciting third-person shooter.

What makes Gears of War 5 Awesome:

• Fun weapons and abilities will allow players to engage the enemy in exciting ways.
• There’s still plenty of the great cover-based shooting that fans of the series will recognize.
• The game’s graphics are looking great as well.

16. Aliens: Colonial Marines

In this first-person shooter, you play as a colonial marine who has to fend off tons of Aliens. Pretty straight forward and pretty fun.

• You get to fight tons of Aliens in a tension-filled environment.
• With the Co-Op feature, your friends can join in on your campaign, which means you can all have fun together blowing stuff up!
• It’s always fun to be able to see more of a beloved universe like this one.

15. Aliens Vs. Predator

This game puts you into the shoes of three characters. Experience the perspectives of a Marine, an Alien, and a Predator, each with different ways of play.

What makes Aliens Vs. Predator Awesome:

• You get to play as the freaking Predator and Alien. That’s awesome!
• The tense atmosphere keeps you on your toes as you explore the colony.
• When playing as the Alien, things can get gory. If you enjoy that, you’ll enjoy this.

14. The Bureau: XCOM Declassified

The Bureau: XCOM Declassified

This game has you as a member of a secret organization. Your job is to protect the Earth from the weird and strange. And in this third-person shooter, you’ll have a lot of work to do.

What makes The Bureau: XCOM Declassified Awesome:

• It’s got a fun 1960’s ascetic.
• You get to give orders to your squad, giving you the ability to strategize on how you want to take the aliens down. And who doesn’t want to lead a team against an alien invasion?
• Your squad has special abilities and tech you can use to your advantage.

13. Infested Planet

Infested Planet is a top-down strategy game where you navigate a group of soldiers to take down alien bugs. Take them down with strategy and explosions.

What makes Infested Planet Awesome:

• The simplistic art style allows for focus on gameplay.
• It is a strategy game, so you have to think and think fast, cause the aliens aren’t stopping for you.
• You can purchase upgrades for your team between missions, giving you an edge to keep on going.

12. Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop

Want to get a group of friends together (or solo it) and blast a bunch of aliens? Well, that’s Alien Swarm: Reactive drop in a nutshell. Blast your way through this top-down shooter or die trying.

• Top-down shooting gives you a unique and effective view of the fight.
• Squad members have different roles to fill, which means you’ll need to rely on each other to get through alive.
• With the addition of Co-Op, you and your friends can take on the swarms together in this industrial universe.

Be part of a resistance movement against a dystopian government run by aliens. In this tactical shooter, command your team and do your best to retake Earth.

What makes Xcom 2 Awesome:

• The tactical movement allows you to get the lay of the battlefield.
• You will also see short cutscenes based on some of your actions during combat, which allows for some cool shots.
• Between missions, you get to go back to base for story and upgrades, which means even more ways to approach challenges down the line.

10. Among Us

Need another reason not to trust your friends? Then try Among Us! This multiplayer game puts you in the shoes of some astronauts who have an imposter on their hands. Complete the tasks given to you while trying to survive, you may just find the Imposter before he finds you.

What makes Among Us Awesome:

• This game has an endearing art style for such a devious concept.
• You’ll feel tense the entire time no matter what side you’re on, as you don’t know who to trust, or who’ll send you into the vacuum of space.
• I personally appreciate the fact it’s cross-platform, which makes it more accessible and therefore more people to play with!

9. Stellaris

A game about creating a space-age empire, with a massive galaxy to explore? Sign me up! With things like research to large scale space battles, this is an immersive galaxy to get lost in.

What makes Stellaris Awesome:

• A lot of the game is randomly generated, so you’ll always have something new to see!
• Loads of customization for your empire’s species, which allows you to explore a ton of different ideas.
• Did I mention massive space battles? Because you can have massive space battles.

8. Earth Defense Force 5

Earth Defense Force 5 is a cheesy blast, filled with giant aliens, explosions, and you’re thrown into the middle of it all.

If you like your sci-fi adventures to be over the top and a bit silly, this is the game for you.

What makes Earth Defense Force 5 Awesome:

• There are giant monsters and aliens that you fight in droves with over the top weaponry. What else do you need to know?
• All sorts of wacky vehicles, from tanks to jetpacks, that let you flight take the fight to the enemy, while still getting a kick from how ridiculous everything is.
• There are plenty of weapons and upgrades to choose from as you progress, so you can build towards your way of play.

7. Gears of War 4

Another entry in the third-person shooter series Gear of War. These games continue to provide an excellent cover-based system and plenty of interesting fights.

What makes Gear of War 4 Awesome:

• Combat dialogue contains plenty of banter, which is great for characterization.
• The gameplay itself is solid as you go from cover to cover.
• With the ability to carry multiple weapons, you can easily switch between them mid-fight, which allows you to adapt to any situation the game throws at you.

6. Destiny 2

The sequel to the popular Destiny, you continue the story as a Guardian. In this first-person shooter, you’ll explore the space and shoot robots and dangerous aliens, some of which have launched a campaign against Earth.

What makes Destiny 2 Awesome:

• The game's overall look and gameplay are reminiscent of fantasy, even to the point were there it has magic-like abilities for the heroes.
• When you start the game, you pick from three different classes, each with a different set of abilities, making the gameplay varied and exciting.
• This game allows you to romp through space with your friends, which, who doesn’t want to do?

5. StarCraft 2

StarCraft 2 Gameplay

Essentially, this game is really complicated space chess. It requires skill and strategic thinking to play as any of the three factions in this game. Outthink your friends or computers in this exciting battle of strategy!

What makes StarCraft 2 Awesome:

• This game will have you thinking about everything from resource management to how to defend your base from an incoming attack.
• All factions have a different approach to the game, which means different ways to play, but you also gotta stay vigilant!
• This game isn’t just multiplayer, but it also has a campaign for each faction, which means more story, which is always a win in my book.

4. Crysis 3

Set foot into an overgrown New York City, and take down enemies as the Prophet, a super soldier in a nano suit.

As you explore and fight your way through the city, take the time to enjoy the incredible graphics that make the scenery stunning!

What makes Crysis 3 Awesome:

• The Crysis series is known for having excellent graphics, and Crysis 3 is the best looking of them.
• You get to use a Bow. I mean, how many sci-fi games get away with letting you do that? Sure, there are other weapons, but you get a freaking bow!
• The nano suit allows you to go invisible, so go forth and stealth!

A sci-fi game with a bow is just awesome!

3. Alien: Isolation

Most games make the player the hunter, but in this one, you are the hunted. Trapped within a space station, you will have to hide from, avoid, and trick the terrifying Alien. Will you be prey or will you escape?

What makes Alien Isolation awesome:

• Roaming the space station is a dangerous Alien. Your few options to hide, run, and hopefully outsmart it. Hopefully.
• Being on a space station, a lot of the areas are going to be cramped, giving the game a sense of claustrophobia. And the fact you’re trapped in there with the Alien only reminds you how much danger you’re in.
• Enter into the universe of a beloved movie franchise. Good luck trying to get out.

2. Prey

Prey is a paranoia-inducing mystery, where the protagonist must carry explore a space station.

Simple enough, except for the fact that almost literally anything can be a shape-shifting creature. You’ll have to blast and smash everything, just in case, to survive.

What makes Prey Awesome:

• The Neuromod system allows you to upgrade your character and make it through the station based on how you want to do it.
• One of the things that stick out is the foam gun, which allows you to solve problems and all sorts of other things.
• Few games will make you terrified of random junk that’s just lying around. Enough said.

1. Mass Effect 2

Mass Effect 2 is the second game in the beloved Mass Effect Trilogy. In the game you play as Commander Shepard, who has been recently resurrected by the shadow organization known as Cerberus, hoping he can protect humanity.

Throughout the game you will command the Normandy v.2 and your allies across the galaxy, going on missions and uncovering the mystery about a Race of Aliens known as the Collectors.

What makes Mass Effect 2 Awesome:

• The game introduces you to a crew that is brimming with character, and you must win each of their loyalty, or face the consequences.
• Your choices carry over from the previous game, and the choices you make in this game affect who lives and who dies, even Shepard himself.
• Combat is much more fun thanks to the improvements they made to the combat, which means you’ll have a blast exploring the galaxy and fighting whatever tries to stop you!
