Ever wondered why so many of today’s crosshairs are T-shaped? What about dot crosshairs? What even is a crosshair?

A crosshair is a reference tool for tracking opponents, encompassing three fundamental components: movement, spray, and alignment (relative to the player model and distance).

While many players can identify a crosshair that best suits them, it's crucial to understand their underlying mechanisms and one's surroundings. Doing so may help you find a better crosshair, make improvements, or simply keep your current one.

That said, let’s dive into a handful of examples. And what better way to do so than seeing what some of the pros offer?

Background

electroNic is a Russian CS2 rifler for Virtus.pro. From 2018 to 2021, he secured a top 10 spot by HLTV. And in 2020, he earned MVP (HLTV) from the ICE Challenge.

Crosshair Analysis

Similar to many crosshairs, electroNic uses something small. To improve visibility, players frequently incorporate a vibrant color or augment the crosshair's thickness. In this situation, it’s both. Notice, however, that the middle gap remains quite visible. Some players use this gap to peer into their opponents or establish a clear line of sight. While many crosshairs have fairly unnoticeable gaps (usually at longer distances), electroNic’s doesn’t. 

At short distances, the crosshair aligns toward the center of the head. At mid-ranges, the crosshair covers most of the head. And at long ranges, the crosshair covers about 90% to 100% of the head. 

In terms of movement and spray, it's relatively easy to spot, especially when placed on the opponent's head. The bright green color and thickness also increase its visibility. It maintains a balanced size, minimizing some distractions while potentially making recoil patterns easier to follow. Recall that smaller crosshairs often overlap more efficiently within the player model without over-extending (outside the head or body, for example).

device maintains a fairly compact crosshair, despite a small middle gap. Interestingly, at long ranges, the lines appear interconnected. This optical illusion can be attributed to the tendency of our minds to fill in gaps to recognize similar or meaningful patterns. What does this have to do with CS2? Well, it suggests that a more compact crosshair or one that reflects a similar pattern may be easier to recognize, visualize, and track, even if it isnt fully connected. 

Aside from that, the crosshair stands out thanks to its bright yellow color and head-sized shape.  

At short ranges, the crosshair primarily covers the top of the head. At mid-ranges, it often encompasses the head entirely, resembling a grappling claw. At long ranges, the crosshair envelops the head and occasionally extends slightly towards the, "ears.”

In this scenario, it resembles a grappling claw with a hole in the middle. This idea of a grappling claw may in turn help players get more headshots as it latches onto the opponent's head.

At first glance, HObbit's crosshair looks like a shining star. However, a closer look reveals a continuous T-shaped crosshair, maintaining the size of a dot. Given its fairly bright teal color, the crosshair is also lively and unique. Moreover, with its small size, over-extensions are virtually nonexistent; meaning it consistently stays within the boundaries of the opponent's head, rather than shifting towards the shoulders or arms. As a result, its compact shape exhibits remarkable consistency across various distances.

At short ranges, the crosshair covers the center of the forehead; at mid ranges, the crosshair covers the forehead; at long ranges, the crosshair covers the head without over-extending (again, these are approximations). 

For tracking movement, the crosshair is fairly easy to spot, thanks to its vivid teal color and compact shape. Nonetheless, it’s quite small. 

For spraying, the crosshair is arguably much better compared to tracking movement, given its miniature size.

His current KDR stands at 1.20. He also owns an ADR of 89.2, OKR of 1.29, and a ~60% 1v1 clutch rate. 

Crosshair Analysis

XANTARES's crosshair stands out due to its large middle gap, which stays consistent at short, middle, and long ranges. While this might seem obvious, some crosshairs possess significantly smaller middle gaps that become challenging to see at mid or long ranges; appearing as continuous. On top of that, the gap may go unnoticed subconsciously. 

As mentioned earlier, some players use a middle gap to improve their line of sight. In XANTARES's case, his crosshair not only effectively covers the opponent's head, but also includes markers (so to speak) pointing in that direction.

In fact, T-shaped crosshairs, in general, aim to draw players' attention toward the center or middle. Although the lines don’t actually point in one specific direction, our minds naturally seek patterns in objects or things. In this case, the lines appear to converge towards the center because they all seemingly lead in one direction rather than diverge. There may be other reasons as to why this is, however. 

At short distances, the crosshair tends to cover the opponent’s forehead. At mid-ranges, the crosshair tends to cover the opponent’s head while over-extending (outside the head). At long ranges, the crosshair tends to cover the opponent’s head while greatly over-extending; although it’s as if the lines were markers pointing towards the center or enemy’s head. 

For movement, the crosshair is fairly easy to track despite its thinness. Instead, the bright green color and large middle gap increase its visibility. 

For spraying, it may be difficult to follow the recoil pattern given its large size. It's important to note the distinction between spraying on a wall versus on a player model as they’re visually different. 

While the former is generally easier, the player model adds another layer of complexity. And as previously stated, larger crosshairs frequently extend outside the player model, making spraying or recoil control more challenging for some. However, users can still make adjustments over time.

Despite being small, the crosshair stands out with its cyan color, compact shape, and thick layer. Upon closer inspection, it surprisingly looks like a PS2 controller d-pad. The middle gap, though subtle, doesn't present itself as a moving dot; instead, from a distance, it takes on the appearance of a diamond shape. Users may occasionally spot the gap, as it offers a line of sight.

Unlike T-shaped crosshairs, dot, square, or diamond-shaped crosshairs often mimic the size and shape of an opponent’s head (not just one). This, in turn, can help a player’s headshot rate.

Therefore, they’re often more effective for tracking movement and may act as a grappling claw for some (latching onto an opponent's head). 

Interestingly, larger crosshairs can also offer a more noticeable middle gap or center point. This in turn, may provide players with an improved line of sight.

At short distances, the crosshair covers the opponent’s forehead fairly well. At mid-distances, the crosshair covers the head well, but extends outside a bit. And at long ranges, the crosshair covers the head completely, but extends near the player model’s shoulders. 

As aforementioned, for some players, a bigger crosshair helps with tracking enemies by improving visibility. For some, however, it may be too big of a distraction.

S1mple, unlike most players, opted for a dot/square-shaped crosshair (or used to). You might ask about the benefits and differences between a dot and a t-shaped crosshair. 

To begin, while most T-shaped crosshairs mimic the size of the opponent's head, they don't replicate the shape. However, with a t-shape crosshair, the four lines gravitate your attention towards the middle or center, as they “point” in the same direction. However, a dot crosshair often aligns with the opponent's head in both size and shape. Consequently, there's an additional layer of similarity, making headshots more feasible for some players.

Donk uses a very small yet relatively thick and white T-shaped crosshair.
