DOTA 2: How To Boost Your MMR

Matchmaking Rating, or MMR, is DOTA 2’s way of ranking players based on their skill level. To put it very simply, the higher your MMR, the better a player you are. The issue is that no one’s happy with their DOTA 2 MMR. It can always, always, always go up. There’s always something you can do to improve at DOTA 2.

Here are a few ways you can boost your MMR in DOTA 2.

1. Queue With A Squad

DOTA 2 is a team game. Each team’s made up of five individual players, each with their own playstyle, strengths, and weaknesses. This means that knowing your team is perhaps even more important than your enemy.

Queuing with a squad you know can make DOTA 2 much more fun. You can plan better, play better, and even improve faster with the help of teammates.

There are tons of discord servers, websites, and subreddits out there that can help you find a team. Another good way is to add people to your friends list after wins.

2. Work On Your Game Knowledge

DOTA 2 isn’t an easy game. It’s got hundreds of items, Heroes, strats, and game mechanics. Without game knowledge, the game just isn’t playable.

Each Hero’s unique. They all have counter picks, strong and weak items, and certain gameplay mechanics they need to abuse. Everything in this game is nuanced and worth understanding. This way, you can make more effective plans, buy items better suited to the game situation, and have improved synergy with your teammates’ Heroes.

The DOTA 2 Wiki and Subreddit are great spots to read up on the game. You can also check out YouTube channels, or have a coach guide you through it in-game.

3. Practice Your Keyboard Skills

While game knowledge is arguably more important, DOTA 2 is still a skill-based game. Ember Spirit and Invoker are great examples of Heroes that need fast hands to work.

It’s useful, then, to pop into a Demo Hero lobby and try getting your hands accustomed to Hero spell combos. These can change the way a Hero is played and can have a massive impact on your win rate given that you have more options to choose from.

In general, practicing in DOTA 2 is never a bad thing. It seems a bit tedious, but mastering combos can give you all kinds of new avenues to explore and exploit.

Following this advice, your MMR won’t just rise. You’ll be palpably better at DOTA 2. Your team play, game knowledge, and skill will translate into more wins. These wins will translate into increased MMR.

This video follows up on the advice with even more tips to increase your MMR in DOTA 2.
