The Hero King

The Hero King himself made his Smash debut in Melee, and he’s always been one of my favorite characters. His speed and range make for some decent combos, not to mention his amazing tipper. Read on to learn some of his top combos.

The Best Combos

10. D-Throw > Bair

Showing of this great combo (Starts at 0:03)

Attacking first with D-Throw sends your opponent behind you. Following up with Bair sends your opponent away from you. At lower percent, this can lead to more nasty things.

9. U-Tilt > U-Tilt > U-Air

This can be very devastating (Starts at 1:46)

Marth’s U-Tilt is pretty powerful and has decent knockback. At low percent, you can combo it into itself pretty easily. Ending with U-Air can lead to more combos, or if you tipper it, can send opponents flying. You’ll need some space for the sweet spot, so remember that in practice.

8. U-Air > U-Tilt

Why not reverse the combo? (Starts at 2:22)

You can also reverse the order you U-Tilt and U-Air. While your opponents won’t go as high or far, this combo can lead to some decent ground attacks. If you’re fast and precise enough, you could also short hop and keep your air game going.

7. Fair > Forward-B

Trap your enemy in this one (Starts at 3:58)

Fair is a very versatile combo starter, one of the combos being Fair > Forward-B. Since Marth’s Dancing Blade can change its knockback, this combo can be unpredictable for opponents. Hitting and tipper at the end of the forward variation is a viable kill option as well.

6. U-Air > Nair > F-Tilt

Timing is key (Starts at 0:21)

A more difficult combo, you need to use U-Air near the ground. You don’t want your opponent to fly too far so you can follow up with Nair. Good timing is necessary here because a mistimed U-Air can leave you open to being punished.

5. Dair > U-Tilt > U-Air

Dair to dream (Starts at 0:59)

The great thing about Marth’s Dair is when used on the ground with the sweet spot, there isn’t any knockback. Instead, the opponent is in hit-stun for a short time. Hitting with Marth’s U-Tilt gives a satisfying opportunity for U-Air to hit (and possibly take a stock).

4. Dair > Grab

Grab setups are very important (Starts at 0:15)

You can also use Dair to grab and throw opponents. The hit stun lasts long enough for you to grab and pummel the enemy, and prepare for great follow up attacks. Don’t worry about missing the sweet spot; the sour spot works just as well for this one!

3. Bair > F-Smash

Sometimes it pays to sourspot (Starts at 0:22)

Unlike most combos so far, you want to sour spot the Bair hit. You’re setting up for an F-Smash tipper, one of Marth’s strongest moves, so sweet spotting won’t work. It’ll send the opponent too far away.

2. Dair > F-Smash

What a powerful combo! (Starts at 2:11)

This combo can be devastating if done right. You want the sweet spot again, just like combo 4. However, this time you’ll be using F-Smash. It might be a good idea to charge F-Smash first, to wait for the opponent to fall. This is a great kill option near a stage’s edge.

1. Nair > Fair

One of my favorites (Starts at 1:17)

This is my favorite combo of Marth’s. It can be used as a “get-off-me” tactic and an offensive strategy. You don’t have to sweet sot it either. It works better at lower percent but can be effectively sour spotted at higher damage.

In Conclusion

All in all, the Hero King has an assorted array of combos for all different situations. Even as a pocket character, it would be a great asset to know how to play Marth. Good luck and happy smashing.
