Hooks are the pinnacle of Terraria movement. It's the most common way to get out of chasms or climb mountains. The very first type of hook that you'll be able to get is made from gems. Never underestimate them though as they can carry you through most of pre-hardmode. 

5. Sapphire Hook

Blue is the new black

The Sapphire Hook is the easiest to craft on our list, but they're not the weakest among the pre-hardmode hooks. They're made with 15 Sapphire and are the third weakest gem hook in the game. This is not a big deal however as any hook can be used up to late game.

• Sapphire is not a rare material to find underground and can be found in huge clusters

4. Emerald Hook

Emeralds are a fine specimen indeed

The Emerald Hook is one of the most common hooks used even up to Moon Lord. They're made with 15 Emerald and have performance stats similar to end-game hooks. That said, it is still not our top gem hook on our list.

What makes it great:

• Emeralds are easy to spot when you have Spelunker Potions as no other gem has a similar color scheme.

3. Ruby Hook

Rubies look like cherries, don't they?

The Ruby Hook is a high-performance hook that can save you a lot of trouble when it comes to hook upgrading. They're made with 15 Ruby and have performance stats similar to end-game hooks. Although it has better stats than the emerald variant, the gems are around the same rarity.

2. Amber Hook

These won't breed dinosaurs, right?

The Amber Hook is a special addition to this list for the reason that you can play an entire playthrough without finding a single Amber gem. Combining 15 Amber will give you this hook that has the second-best performance out of all hooks on this list.

• Finding all the Amber to make this is a bragging right on its own.

1. Diamond Hook

Diamonds are forever~

The Diamond Hook is the highest upgrade available when it comes to Gem Hooks. It is made of 15 diamonds, which may sound hard to get but is easier than hunting for Amber gems. This hook can be used up to Moon Lord as it provides the closest tile reach to Hardmode hooks.

• Velocity: 12.5

What makes it great:

• The average reach of Hardmode hooks is 30 tiles with a speed of 15, making the Diamond hook a good alternative with the smallest drawbacks
