[Top 5] Terraria Best Gem Staff (And How To Get Them)

Colorful rainbow gem staves!

Gem staves are your earliest form of mage weaponry. They are able to shoot out powerful bolts of energy and the latter ones can even pierce enemies. There is not that much when it comes to mage weaponry, but the gem staves are strong and the easiest to get. Find out which are the best with our Top 5 Terraria Best Gem Staff and how to get them.

5. Sapphire Staff

It's dangerous to go alone! Take this starting staff!

The Sapphire Staff is the 3rd weakest among all gem staves. It's a fairly common item for a starting mage class and can be used decently up until the end of pre-Hardmode. It has the highest damage among all non-autofire gem staves and is a great starting staff if you find enough Sapphire for it.

Item details:

  • Damage - 17 (Magic)
  • Knockback - 4 (Weak)
  • Mana - 5
  • Critical chance - 4%
  • Use time - 34 (Slow)
  • Velocity - 7.5

What makes it great:

  • Sapphire is not a rare material to find underground and can be found in huge clusters

How to get it:

4. Emerald Staff

Green magic is good magic

The Emerald Staff is the counterpart to the Sapphire Staff since it uses Tungsten instead of Silver. Although it's an ore counterpart, the Emerald staff has higher base damage and can autofire and pierce. This makes this staff considerably stronger, although the chances of getting it are purely based on world generation.

Item details:

  • Damage - 19 (Magic)
  • Knockback - 4.25 (Average)
  • Mana - 6
  • Critical chance - 4%
  • Use time - 32 (Slow)
  • Velocity - 8
  • Pierces - 1

What makes it great:

  • It's the same tier as the Sapphire Staff but is considerably more powerful

How to get it:

3. Ruby Staff

Rubies are red, like blood

The Ruby Staff is the direct upgrade to the Sapphire and Emerald Staves in terms of raw damage. Like the previous item, the Gold ore staff is weaker than the Platinum counterpart (e.g. Silver vs Tungsten). That said, it's still a very powerful mage weapon and can easily dispatch the Wall of Flesh with ample practice.

Item details:

  • Damage - 21 (Magic)
  • Knockback - 4.75 (Average)
  • Mana - 7
  • Critical chance - 4%
  • Use time - 28 (Average)
  • Velocity - 9
  • Pierces - 1

What makes it great:

  • Rubies are spread across the underground as they're also part of the Slime Crown recipe

How to get it:

2. Amber Staff

No mosquito inside this gem staff

The Amber Staff is tied in power with the Ruby Staff. The reason why it's higher on this list is that it's available for crafting no matter which ores generate in your world. It's the only gem staff that can be crafted without the use of ores as well.

Item details:

  • Damage - 21 (Magic)
  • Knockback - 4.75 (Average)
  • Mana - 7
  • Critical chance - 4%
  • Use time - 28 (Average)
  • Velocity - 9
  • Pierces - 1

What makes it great:

  • Finding all the Amber to make this is a bragging right on its own
  • Can be crafted in all world generations

How to get it:

1. Diamond Staff

Diamonds are forever~

The Diamond Staff is the most powerful among all Gem Staves. It offers the best in overall stats and can still be used up until early Hardmode. Since ore generation is random, you can technically obtain this staff way before getting all the previous items in this list. If you manage to get the materials for this, you're set for all of pre-Hardmode.

Item details:

  • Damage - 23 (Magic)
  • Knockback - 5.5 (Average)
  • Mana - 8
  • Critical chance - 4%
  • Use time - 26 (Average)
  • Velocity - 9.5
  • Pierces - 1

What makes it great:

  • It's the strongest Gem Staff in the game and can be crafted early with good RNG
