Do you have a defensive playstyle? Do you enjoy watching your ranged units do all the work before the enemy has even a chance of getting close to you? If you do, then you should play a ranged faction. Now what are the ranged factions? Ranged factions are those that have a lot of ranged units.
Now, what are ranged units? Ranged units are any units that can shoot from afar. There can be ranged cavalry, artillery, beats, infantry, archers, etc. You get the point. Some factions have better-ranged units than others, so I'll be talking about them, and listing them so let's get into it!
5. Goldtooth - Ogre Kingdoms
The first faction I'll be mentioning are the big, bad ogres. When it comes to their ranged units, they've got a few, and they are quite tanky. They have one missile infantry, two monstrous infantry, one monster, and two artillery, which are classified as ranged units. They've got a diverse selection of ranged units to choose from, and each one of them has a lot of health and armor.
Alongside that, they've also got some tanky infantry units that can protect their ranged units while they deal with the threat in front of them. The downside to these units is that they have a hefty upkeep cost, and most units are slow in battle. The good thing is that the ranged units deal armor-piercing damage, and the artillery deals damage in an AoE area.
Goldtooth - Ogre Kingdoms Ranged Strengths:
- The ranged units have a lot of hp.
- They deal armor-piercing damage.
- They are armored.
- Some units can move while shooting.
- They have a diverse selection of units from basic archers to beasts.
4. Kairos Fateweaver - Tzeentch
Here we have Kairos Fateweaver from Tzeentch; he also doesn't have a wide selection of ranged units, but what he does have is a shield that needs to be taken out first before the health bar starts going down. Going in and out of battle is a key strategy. They have 3 missile infantry, 1 missile cavalry, 1 missile chariot, 1 monstrous infantry, and 2 monsters that are classified as ranged.
The best part about these units is that they are quick on their feet. Good for flanks and setting up ambushes. They also have one missile chariot and one missile cavalry, which are great for charging into enemies to destroy their formations. You can also drive past the enemy army while the ranged units do the damage.
Kairos Fateweaver - Tzeentch Ranged Strengths:
- Ranged units are pretty quick and can easily rotate and move around the battlefield.
- Their missile chariots are great at destroying enemy formations.
- The two monsters are good at dispersing the infantry units, and they are good at ranged and melee.
- The units have a shield that needs to be taken out first before their health starts taking damage.
- The upkeep cost for the ranged units isn't high and won’t be a problem for your economy.
3. The Northern Provinces - Grand Cathay
Where do we start with this faction? First off, when it comes to The Northern Provinces from Grand Cathay, their units gain buffs when their Yin and Yang are at 0. They have a diverse selection of ranged units, including artillery, war machines, cavalry, chariots, and so on. They are excellent for a defensive playstyle, but they suffer hugely from a lack of movement speed and are very susceptible to flanks.
Let me say that their artillery is simply phenomenal at dispersing the infantry. They have two war machines that are ranged, and both can fly. These machines are amazing for flanking and destroying the enemy archers or artillery way in the back. The units aren’t expensive to recruit and upkeep, especially the tier 1 and tier 2 units.
The Northern Provinces - Grand Cathay Ranged Strengths:
- Their war machines can fly and are ranged, which is great for flanking and destroying enemy artillery.
- Their units are cheap to recruit and don't cost a lot of gold to upkeep.
- They are excellent at defending cities from sieges.
- The "Fire Rain Rocket" is an artillery that is amazing at destroying enemy infantry units.
- All of the ranged units gain bonuses if the Yin and Yang are at zero and they are placed opposite each other.
2. The Ice Court - Kislev
Ah yes, the Russians of Fantasy Warhammer, are led by Tzarina Katarin. This faction can be found in the northern part of the old world, and some melee infantry units can switch between ranged and melee, which are called hybrids. They also have a passive ability called "By Our Blood," which makes them unbreakable when their leadership starts to dwindle for the first time.
When it comes to the units that are classified as ranged, they have 9 missile infantry, 1 missile cavalry, 2 missile chariots, and 1 artillery. The units aren't expensive and are cheap for upkeep. They require a defensive playstyle and are decent in both ranged and melee combat due to most units being hybrids.
The Ice Court - Kislev Ranged Strengths:
- The units are hybrids and can switch between melee and ranged.
- The ranged units are decent in melee and ranged combat.
- The chariots are good for destroying the enemy formation.
- The units have a passive ability called "By Our Blood," which makes them unbreakable for 30 seconds when their leadership starts to dwindle.
- The units are cheap and don't require a lot of gold to upkeep.
- The artillery unit is good for sieging cities.
1. The Legion Of Azgorh - Chaos Dwarfs
The chaos dwarfs are the newest faction added to the game and are quite insane, as they have one of the strongest ranged units. One great thing about this faction is that they can upgrade their units with the Hell Forge, making them even stronger. The downside is that they can't just spam these units, and you have to think about who you are going to recruit next.
They have three missile infantry, one missile cavalry, one war machine, and six artillery units that are classified as ranged. That's a good list, but the best unit from them is the "Infernal Guard (Fireglaives)." Not only do they do insane damage from afar, but they are hybrids, which means they will also deal damage in melee form. They also have some great artillery, which is amazing for sieging cities or defending from an enemy siege.
The Legion Of Azgorh - Chaos Dwarfs Ranged Strengths:
- The "Infernal Guard (Fireglaives)" are one of the strongest ranged units in the game.
- The "Infernal Guard (Fireglaives)" are tanky and excellent in melee.
- Their artillery, especially the "Dreadquake Mortar," is the strongest and deals insane damage from a huge distance.
- They are excellent at defending sieges.
- The ranged units are excellent at dwindling the enemy's armies before they manage to get close.
- You can upgrade the units to make them stronger.
