Stone is one of the resources in Valheim that is easily attainable and easily farmed in the game, allowing you to craft things such as weapons, survival materials, and most importantly, structural material for all sorts of builds that you want to accomplish. While this is an easy-to-get item by literally digging on the ground or a huge boulder, the different biomes in Valheim can make it either a walk in the park to gather so much, or be so little that you may end up wasting time.

Given how the various biomes in the game offer different things, finding where to get a ton of Stone can be a good question, especially if you plan on exclusively using it for whatever plans you may have. Thankfully, there aren’t too many biomes in the game, narrowing the choices down to these five places, and we’re here to look at them one by one.
 
As with all Valheim lists, this was written at the time of the games’ latest version (version 0.209.10) and is based on Stone yields, ease of gathering, and feasibility of gathering materials.

5. Swamps

While this biome is rich in Iron, you can find some use for getting a decent amount of stone if you look close enough. (YouTube Channel: Exploration of Games)

What’s Great About the Swamps?

The Swamps may be a dark world, but the benefits are far beyond gloomy, namely, it excels at the following:

• Plenty of Iron
• Crypts house other loot
• Ingredients for mid-game food can be found here

While those are nice and all, the biome isn’t exactly stone rich, as you’ll be likely getting as much as digging straight down in any biome. Where you do get substantial stone materials in this biome are the ruins and nearby spawner areas that you must clear first, before thinking about looting so much more stone. Beyond that, you’ll be better off trying your luck elsewhere, where you’d actually consider in terms of location, build area, and even safety.

How to Farm Stone Here Effectively?

• Find mob spawners as they are surrounded by boulders
• Find remnants of stone structures as they can be destroyed for stone
• (Optional) If you find a Surtling spawner, dig around it to prevent more spawning, also gaining Stone

4. Plains

The most dangerous of biomes currently has some decent sources for Stone, and it’s as obvious as looking at it. (YouTube Channel: YouGotSnaped)

What’s Great About the Plains?

From bases to castles, the Plains requires one or two Stone elements, but past that, the biome naturally gives you other incentives to stay like the ones below.

• Biome you grow Barley and Flax in
• Access to Blackmetal
• High-grade items are usually found here

While the obvious big boulders are a good source of Stone, the best chance of getting Stone here is a huge pillar of rock, that being the Stone Obelisk. By breaking the base and making none of it touch the ground, game physics will take over, collapsing that pillar and generating a lot of Stone in the process. It’s a simple and good way to get Stone, and with a large Plains biome, you could be seeing many of these if your world seed is lucky.

Another way you can get Stone, though risky, is by trying to obtain another material in the biome, Tar. Once you clear the Growth (a huge slowing ooze ball) you’ll be left with a Tar pool, which is dangerous to walk to, putting you at serious risk. If you wish to get the Tar from that pool, you’ll need to make a trench, drain the large tar pool, and ultimately get Stone as you dig deep and far. While these aren’t the safest methods to get Stone, you’d still be getting a decent haul, if you wish to build something on-site.

How to Farm Stone Here Effectively?

• Find big boulders away from any Fuling camp or Lox
• Break Stone Obelisks from the base to collapse into more Stone
• Draining a tar pit will give you Stone naturally

3. Meadows

What’s Great About the Meadows?

You can be assured of safety when picking up stones here as tame beings generally reside here, making for wonderful experiences gathering stone, but also possibly these benefits along the way.

• Plenty of small rock clusters with some Stone being easily picked up
• Safer in terms of enemies interrupting you
• Wood is also a plentiful resource here

The Meadows is the first biome you’ll encounter Stone in this game, so you’ll be assured with the haul, and the only limiting factor is the number of Stone you need for your build. There’s no other way to go when getting Stone here other than whacking away at the various rock formations in the area, and this is where seed generation will play a part in your haul. Some seeds will show a large Meadows section that is predominant with trees, while others may be smaller but house larger open parts where the Stone you seek should make its presence known.

Again, the seed generation will be the deciding factor in your loot, but given the relative safety of this biome, biome-hopping to get the most Stone will be best for you should you choose to put a bit of adventure into it.

• Find the open spaces as they have the rock clusters
• Pick up any loose stone when the prompt shows

2. Black Forest

In the Black Forest, to get some Stone, you’ll need to farm some Stone, or rather the ore trapped within the Stone. (YouTube Channel: Drae)

What’s Great About the Black Forest?

A good area to farm so many things, Stone is one of the most common things to get in this biome, while also offering the goodies of getting the following.

• Access to Bronze (Copper and Tin)
• Many Stone and Wood sources
• Crypts to farm other resources and treasures

While a good biome in general, this biome is surprisingly tame in terms of mobs destroying your newly finished creation, meaning that Stone will be overkill to collect and turn into your desired structures. The process of getting Stone is as simple as literally digging into the earth, but not any ground can work to get the efficient quantity of Stone. Here, you’ll need to find a huge rocky mound, and the best kind is the one that also happens to house Copper ores, namely, a copper deposit. These large, veiny rock formations not only give you Stone, but also Copper, and depending on the size and depth of one of these, you’ll be either getting a lot of metal or an inventory full of Stone.

Both are super useful for you in the early game, so if you wish to load up on Stone, you should consider gathering here as they’re usually a convenient part of the world to gain tons of it, only being worse by another biome in the list.

• Find Copper deposits as they also drop Copper
• Pick around the Copper if you want the Stone only
• (Optional) Use a Troll to destroy stone structures and big rocks for Stone

1. Mountains

Last and certainly not least is the biome that has rock all over the place, the Mountains biome. (YouTube Channel: Sol)

What’s Good About the Mountains?

With a frost resist potion or a cape in hand, you can start exploring the steep Mountain biome and explore its natural wonders that also benefit you by the following.

• Access to Silver
• Decent trees to chop and plenty of stone to work with
• Stone Golems can be another fun way to get Stone

It wasn’t that long ago that the Mountains received a small addition in Frost Caves, which add a few areas that you can explore, but the weird upside to this is that more areas of elevation also increase the Mountain’s depth, allowing you to grab more Stone as a result. While the Mountains have always been a rocky place even without the changes, you can’t just level a Mountain to the ground, as the game imposes a strict depth limit when digging straight down.

So how much Stone are we talking about then? Well, that depends on the biome size but there is one guaranteed example that can show how much Stone you can get. If you were to mine Silver, it extends into a big three-pointed shape, and given the size of one in this game, the Stone can easily exceed your inventory size. Not only can that exceed that inventory size, but given that there can be another Silver deposit nearby, you could be getting enough Stone to rebuild a mini Mountain yourself.

Another fun way to get Stone is a mob that is made of it, the Stone Golem. While this is a tough mob to kill, it’s also predictable once you master the timing. Killing it will net you not only Stone, but also Crystal, allowing you to make Crystal blocks for buildings, or better yet, the Crystal Battleaxe. If you want your guarantees on Stone, you better stock up on some frost resistance mead or your best cape, as you’ll be chilling in the Mountains for all the Stone you want.

• Finding Silver using a Wishbone is best to maximize your pickaxe
• Dig around the deposit to be able to save your best pickaxe and also only get Stone
• Kite the Stone Golem by timing its attacks and killing it with a pickaxe
