[Top 5] Hearthstone Best Mage Decks For The Current Meta

Swing your staff and ready your incantations, the magic show is about to start

As the first class that every new player uses, it is unsurprising that Mage has always been one of Hearthstone’s most popular classes.

From the Freeze Mage that dominated the ladder for a very long time to today’s Spooky Mage archetype, how players theorycraft and innovate new decks is genuinely befitting of a Mage’s curious and experimental personality.

Make sure to put on your magic robes and pointy hats, for we are exploring the Top 5 best Mage decks for Hearthstone’s current meta.

5. Mech Mage

WHY DO YOU THINK WREZIG!! If you can build a freaking Mecha-Shark, then you build a freaking Mecha-Shark!

Mech Mage has always been a bizarrely strong and popular deck archetype even back in the early stages of the game. By relying on an insane opening curve, this deck can dominate the board early on and shut the enemy down with Mecha-Shark.

Once a lead is secured, you should look into discovering more copies of Mecha-Shark and keeping up both board control and face damage through summoning cheap Mechs. If you find yourself in a position where the pace is not as fast as you’d like, Drakefire Amulet and Gaia, the Techtonic are there to provide big threats in dire situations.

What’s great about this deck:

  • Minion refill: Lots of Discover/Summon for Mech minions to keep triggering the Security Automaton and Mecha-Shark early on
  • Consistent early game: The mana curve of this deck is focused more on 2 and 3 mana to ensure that you can get a lead immediately against any deck
  • Catch-up cards: Gaia, the Techtonic is a great card to clear small minions versus aggressive decks while Drakefire Amulet can be used to deal with larger minions

Cards:

  • 2x (1) Click-Clocker
  • 2x (2) Trench Surveyor
  • 2x (2) Security Automaton
  • 2x (2) Deeprun Engineer
  • 2x (2) Annoy-o-Tron
  • 2x (2) Amalgam of the Deep
  • 2x (3) Seascout Operator

4. Ping Mage

Your bones will be added to the pile. Burn!

Commander Sivara gives Ping Mage some very much-needed help in this fast-paced Standard meta.

Initially only relying on the late-game burst damage from Mordresh, this deck now has multiple avenues to deal damage in the midgame from Frozen Touch and Magister Dawngrasp. This deck list also performs better against popular token decks such as Curse Imp Warlock since Wildfire and Solid Alibi can effectively shut down their early turns.

What’s great about this deck:

  • Deck consistency: Being a 30-card deck makes your core cards easier to draw as you can thin out your deck more efficiently
  • Midgame damage: Frozen Touch synergizes well with Frostweave Dungeoneer and all your minion summoning cards such as Cold Case
  • Card draw: Multicaster is included in the card to provide an average of 2 cards drawn, great for refilling your hand along with Arcane Intellect

Cards:

  • 2x (0) Flurry (Rank 1)
  • 2x (1) Wildfire
  • 2x (1) Shivering Sorceress
  • 2x (2) Solid Alibi
  • 2x (2) Amplified Snowflurry
  • 2x (2) Frozen Touch
  • 2x (3) Nightcloak Sanctum
  • 2x (3) Frostweave Dungeoneer
  • 2x (3) Arcane Intellect
  • 1x (4) Varden Dawngrasp
  • 2x (4) Reckless Apprentice
  • 1x (4) Commander Sivara
  • 2x (4) Cold Case

3. Spooky Mage

Hear that rattling?

The newest deck archetype for Mage started off with a bang but has fallen a bit in the meta since Renathal decks are just a bit too slow against all the aggro decks. Still, it’s not like this deck is helpless against a fast deck as a lucky Wildfire draw in turn 1 or turn 2 pretty much guarantees your win.

The midgame is where this deck truly gets annoying to play against thanks to all the control tools at your disposal. Blizzard and Deathborne easily swings the board to your favor while Nightcloak Sanctum along with Frostweave Dungeoneer can keep a big minion frozen all game.

With multiple win conditions such as Mordresh and Sire Denathrius, even disruption cards are not enough to completely neutralize your deck as there is still Kel’Thuzad providing ample amounts of burst damage.

What’s great about this game:

  • Multiple win conditions: This deck specifically works well versus your opponent’s Theotar as getting one of your threats stolen is not a game-ending event
  • Damage mitigation: All the armor gain and Solid Alibi can buy time for you to reach 6 mana and cast Deathborne when playing versus token decks
  • Spell value: Commander Sivara and Grey Sage Parrot can refill and cheat spells out for you to mitigate the weakness of Renathal decks running out of steam

Cards:

  • 2x (0) Flurry (Rank 1)
  • 2x (1) Wildfire
  • 1x (1) Sir Finley, Sea Guide
  • 2x (1) Shivering Sorceress
  • 2x (2) Solid Alibi
  • 2x (2) Amplified Snowflurry
  • 1x (3) Prince Renathal
  • 2x (3) Nightcloak Sanctum
  • 2x (3) Frostweave Dungeoneer
  • 1x (3) Brann Bronzebeard
  • 2x (3) Arcane Intellect
  • 1x (4) Varden Dawngrasp
  • 2x (4) Reckless Apprentice
  • 2x (4) Deepwater Evoker
  • 1x (4) Commander Sivara
  • 2x (4) Cold Case
  • 1x (5) Theotar, the Mad Duke
  • 2x (6) Grey Sage Parrot
  • 2x (6) Deathborne
  • 2x (6) Blizzard
  • 1x (7) Magister Dawngrasp
  • 1x (8) Mordresh Fire Eye
  • 1x (8) Kel'Thuzad, the Inevitable
  • 2x (9) Rune of the Archmage
  • 1x (10) Sire Denathrius

2. Secret Mage

"So a Venthyr, an Old God, and a Tauren walk into a bar…"

Being on the cheaper side in terms of dust value certainly does not take away from the strength of this Secret Mage deck.

Feasting on the unpredictability of the unknown, Secrets steadily grind away at your opponent’s resources and give you an overall card advantage. Especially due to Objection, Mage’s latest Secret, your array of disruption tools got so much wider than before.

The core win condition of this deck still relies on Chatty Bartender overwhelming the board, but the added Hero Power package should give you peace of mind in those late-game situations where you desperately need firepower.

What’s great about this deck:

  • Mana discount: Secret Mage keeps up its unrelenting pressure thanks to the multiple mana discount cards such as Anonymous Informant and Contract Conjurer
  • AOE board clear: Chatty Bartender is a guaranteed AOE damage machine that only pumps out more value over time
  • Secret generation: Orion, Mansion Manager generates cards on his own without depleting your card pool, letting you keep up against value decks

Cards:

  • 2x (1) Wildfire
  • 2x (1) Shivering Sorceress
  • 2x (2) Sketchy Stranger
  • 2x (2) Arcanologist
  • 2x (2) Anonymous Informant

1. Big Spell Mage

Let me remind you who you're dealing with!

When you are asked to think of a Mage deck, you’re probably imagining Big Spell Mage. A cold and calculative early game to control your opponent all while waiting for the opportune time to unleash a barrage of spells, that’s what this deck is all about.

Shying away from the usual Blizzards and Flamestrikes, this deck takes a riskier route by utilizing Rune of the Archmage as the primary spell card. Despite running only 4 spell cards, Grey Sage Parrot and Magister Dawngrasp generate so much spell value that everyone has no choice but to be convinced of the spell part in this Big Spell Mage deck.

What’s great about this deck:

  • Minion control: This deck has a lot of ways to slow down the popular aggro decks such as Freeze effects and a Silence effect from Smothering Starfish to remove buffs
  • Mana cheat: Your spells are heavily discounted from cards like Balinda Stonehearth and Barbaric Sorceress so you can cast them early against tempo decks
  • Late-game guarantee: Mordresh with Brann can burst all enemies for 20 damage and if that is not enough, Magister Dawngrasp’s hero power remains a threat as it can scale infinitely

Cards:

  • 2x (1) Pelican Diver
  • 2x (2) Mailbox Dancer
  • 2x (2) Far Watch Post
  • 2x (2) Amplified Snowflurry
  • 2x (3) Nightcloak Sanctum
  • 1x (3) Brann Bronzebeard
  • 1x (4) Varden Dawngrasp
  • 1x (4) Smothering Starfish
  • 2x (4) Reckless Apprentice
  • 2x (4) Deepwater Evoker
  • 1x (4) Blademaster Okani
  • 1x (5) Theotar, the Mad Duke
  • 2x (6) Grey Sage Parrot
  • 2x (6) Barbaric Sorceress
  • 1x (6) Balinda Stonehearth
  • 1x (7) Magister Dawngrasp
  • 1x (8) Mordresh Fire Eye
  • 2x (9) Rune of the Archmage
  • 2x (10) Drakefire Amulet
