Minecraft: How to Breed (and Tame) Parrots

I promise, this isn't a trick. Kinda.

One of the best pets in Minecraft is the Parrot. Why? Well, they’re cute, they sit on your shoulder, and they can perform for you. They’re a fun addition to the game that adds a little extra color and life. And, as everyone knows, there is only one way to make a cute animal in Minecraft cuter - breed them for a baby. So, how do you breed Parrots?

  • You can’t. It’s currently impossible to breed Parrots in Minecraft without add-ons or mods; you can only tame them and keep them as adult birds.

You may be wondering why I wrote this just to say, “Psych! It’s a trick question, you can’t breed Parrots at all!” Well, that’s because I’d actually never tried to breed a Parrot before - so I didn’t know it was impossible. I figured I probably wasn’t the only one who didn’t know, so I’m clearing it up now. Vivtorsing’s video sums it up pretty nicely, too!

Of course, I’m not going to post this without any helpful knowledge whatsoever, so here are two mini tutorials for Parrots.

  • The first mini tutorial is for those of you that are desperate to get your hands on a baby Parrot. If you want to breed Parrots so badly, you’re going to have to download an add-on that seems to only be available to Pocket Edition. ALGSonic has a video demonstrating this add-on, and the description links to the add-on itself and a guide to download it, as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtQNxGAqT1U
    • Once you have the add-on in your game, just tame 2 Parrots, feed them both seeds when they’re close to one another, and watch the magic happen as a tiny baby Parrot appears!
  • The second mini tutorial is for those of you that don’t know how to tame a Parrot in the first place. If you want a pet Parrot in Minecraft, break some grass to collect seeds - you’ll want to have more than 1 - and then find yourself a jungle biome. Parrots are a dime a dozen there; if you’re having trouble finding one, listen for tweeting and squawking and follow that sound.
    • When you locate your Parrot, hold your seeds in your hand and use the interact key to feed them to the Parrot. Feed the Parrot until you see red hearts appear; that means the Parrot has been tamed and will follow you! Parrots can be told to sit down, which will prevent them from following you, and will automatically perch on your shoulder.

That’s pretty much everything I have to say about Parrots - I hope this guide was helpful, especially to anyone that has been desperately trying to breed their birds to no avail. We’ll see you around; happy gaming!
