So how do you know which one of these tameable mobs to choose from? What do you need to know to pick the perfect horse for you?

Have a look at the list below offering only the Best Horses in all of Minecraft and how to catch/tame them.

10. Normal Horses

Some say BREEDING can be key to creating a perfect horse.

Firstly, of course, we have the normal horses. These mobs can found in be small herds of 2-6 and spawns in the plains and savannas. While there are many variants and colours of this kind, the essential things to consider when picking the best horse are its statistics – health, speed and jump strength. And you won’t know the exact statistics until you tame and ride them yourself.

Horse Stats:

  • Health: 15-30 (or 7.5-15 hearts)
  • Speed: 4.8 blocks/sec (min) – 14.5 blocks/sec (max)
  • Jump Strength: 2-5 blocks high

How to Get Normal Horses:

  • When you first meet a wild horse, the first step is to tame it. This can be done by approaching the horse and right-clicking it with your empty hand to mount it.
  • Although you might get thrown off a few times, just keep petting and mounting the horse and eventually, you will see a few hearts. That means you have successfully tamed it.
TIP: A faster way to do it is by feeding it first.
  • Press shift and right-click to open its inventory. You may now put a saddle to ride it and armour, if you’d like, to increase its protection when you take him for adventures.

9. Donkeys

Donkeys are known for their consistent statistics and ability to carry chests.

Donkeys may be shorter and less majestic-looking than horses and while they may be a bit slower, what’s great about them is their ability to carry chests and therefore more items and resources for your long journeys and explorations. Unlike horses, all donkeys have the same speed and jump strength, although speed potions can be used on the donkey.

Horse Stats:

  • Health: 15-30 (or 7.5-15 hearts)
  • Speed: 7.5 blocks/sec
  • Jump Strength: 1.9 blocks high

How to Get Donkeys:

  • Although they are rarer than horses, you will also find them in the plains, savanna and villages.
  • Taming a donkey works the same way as normal horses.
  • You will also have to mount it a couple of times to let you ride it. And once it’s tamed, put the saddle to be able to fully control the donkey.
TIP: Holding the control charges the donkey for a higher leap
  • You may also put its unique ability to use and equip it with a chest. This will give you 15 more slots in the inventory.

8. Mules

Mules are the perfect mix between horses and donkeys.

Mules, much like donkeys, are also able to carry chests and expand your inventory but lacks the donkey’s consistency in terms of statistics. And because it is a mix of the normal horse and donkey, it may get the average speed of a horse and donkey which could be faster than the donkey, but in some cases, it might be slower when bred with a slow horse and a donkey.

Horse Stats:

  • Health: 15-30 (or 7.5-15 hearts)
  • Speed: 7.5 blocks/sec and above
  • Jump Strength: 1.9 blocks high

How to Get Mules:

  • As mules do not spawn naturally, it can only be created by cross-breeding the horse and the donkey.
  • Then it will spawn as a foal mule. It may also be spawned using spawn eggs and there’s a 20% chance that it will spawn as a foal.

7. Skeleton horse

You might find a Skeleton Horse during a thunderstorm!

The Skeleton Horses, also one of the passive mobs, are the undead variant of the regular horse. Since the 1.6 update of Minecraft, Skeleton horses can now spawn naturally in the wild. They can only spawn from skeleton traps, some in areas that a regular horse may not, such as the middle of the ocean. Once tamed, skeleton horses can also be ridden in the ocean at any depth and can be ridden along the ocean floor.

Horse Stats:

  • Health: 15 (or 7.5 hearts)
  • Speed: 8.6 blocks/sec
  • Jump Strength: 1.9 to 5.2 blocks high

How to Get a Skeleton Horse:

  • Skeleton horses can only be obtained through skeleton traps (they are a kind of trap designed for the player).
  • While it is raining, you might see that a skeleton horse will spawn out of nowhere but as it is a passive mob, it will do nothing and keep walking along.
  • However, once the player starts to approach it, a Skeleton will spawn riding the horse. Once this happens, 3 other skeleton horses with skeletons riding them will spawn nearby and will attack the player.
  • The skeletons will attack the player, wearing an enchanted iron and holding an enchanted bow. You may also use a bow and arrows in defeating the Skeletons.
  • Once they are defeated, the player will be able to ride them right away using a saddle as they are already tame. The other 3 skeleton horses are also tame right when they are spawned.

6. Zombie horse

As intimidating as they may seem, Zombie Horses are completely passive unlike the Zombie Mobs.

Zombie horses, once tamed and saddled, can also be one the fastest means of transportation in the game. They can also be used in climbing hills and jump fences and can be ridden in the water at any depth.

Horse Stats:

  • Health: 15 (or 7.5 hearts)
  • Speed: 8.6 blocks/sec
  • Jump Strength: 1.9 to 5.2 blocks high

How to Get a Zombie Horse:

  • Zombie horses won’t spawn naturally in the game and may only be created by the /summon command or with their spawn egg. When using a spawn egg, 20% will spawn as foals.
  • Also, when spawned using a spawn egg, the Zombie Horse won’t be capable of being tamed, ridden or bred.
  • If you want to spawn a wild or an already tamed or saddled Zombie Horse, follow the detailed instructions here.

5. The Ender horse

This mysterious horse of Minecraft might be the fastest one of all!

If the Zombie or Skeleton Horse is not interesting enough for you, then you can try spawning the Ender Horse through the use of The Ender Horse Addon. It is a Mod you can download to spawn the secret Ender Horse in Minecraft. What sets it apart amongst all the Horses in Minecraft is its ability to Teleport, although it might be a random ability and difficult to handle (as the horse will teleport to random locations). Still, how cool is it to have a teleporting horse?

  • Speed: 8.6 blocks/sec
  • Jump Strength: 5 blocks high

  • To tame it is pretty simple as it is just the same as what you’d do with the normal horses.
  • To be able to fully control it, again, you will need to equip it with a saddle. In Windows 10, press “E” while riding the horse and drag the saddle to the correct slot.
  • With 33 full hearts, this horse will not easily die. But to keep them alive, you’ll need to use bursts of harm potion.

The Black Pegasus is a fireproof variant of the Pegasus and one of the fastest horses in all of Minecraft!

One of the more hostile mobs in the Mo’ Creatures Mod, The Black Pegasus lives in the night and spawns in caves, completely enveloped in total darkness.
