The sixth installment to the popular Bethesda series was officially announced by creator Todd Howard at 2018’s E3 summit.
Understandably, RPG fans like myself were very excited about this news!
Since the initial announcement, Bethesda has released very little information about this exciting and long awaited sequel to Skyrim, but luckily for you, I have done some digging to get the latest rumors to tide you over until the next update.
10. Location, Location, Location! (Where is it?!)
While we don’t officially know where in Tamriel the game is set, fans have been speculating like crazy. Todd Howard said in an interview with eurogamer that they would not be announcing the location just yet. However, eagle eyed fans may have figured it out based on the teaser trailer.
One of the most popular theories is High Rock. This theory comes from some rocks seen in the trailer that are highly removed from ground level. Another theory is that it is the lost island of Yokuda. This theory was sparked by a tweet that suggested the rocks and terrain looked to be beaten up by the ocean.
The theory of the game’s possible title (see #9 on this list) adds fuel to this idea as well. For now, it seems Todd and the Bethesda team are content to let us keep speculating.
9. Title: Redfall?
Again, there has been no official news out of Bethesda, but that has not stopped fans from putting their detective skills to work. When ZeniMax Media attempted to patent the word “Redfall” fans deduced this was because they were trying to secure the title for Elder Scrolls VI.
This theory adds fuel to the location theory of Yokuda as well since the Redguard race is from this very lost island. It’s a pretty good theory, but a theory is all it is for now.
8. Development Building
This was a huge part of gameplay in Fallout 4 and fans have been speculating that Elder Scrolls VI would include some version of this as well.
We got our first glimpse of some basic building mechanics in the Hearthfire DLC for Skyrim, so it’s not that far off to assume we might get some more development building.
7. Photogrammetry Technology
Bethesda mentioned at the 25th Anniversary panel that they would be implementing Photogrammetry technology into the game.
Photogrammetry scans real life objects and environments to bring them into the game. We will get a glimpse at this technology when Bethesda’s Starfield comes out before Elder Scrolls VI.
6. Maybe Multiplayer
It was reported in 2017 that Bethesda was hiring for a developer with "experience developing for online multiplayer environment."
Now, this easily could have been for Fallout 76 as that game was multiplayer, but fans have been speculating that Bethesda will likely keep up with trends and give Elder Scrolls VI a multiplayer option in some way as well.
5. Next-Gen
Since we know we won’t be seeing Elder Scrolls VI until after Starfield, which we know is a next-gen game, we can deduce that Elder Scrolls VI will be a next-gen game as well.
Combine that with the photogrammetry tech and we’ve got ourselves a visually gorgeous game on the way, folks!
4. Virtual Reality Support
With Bethesda titles like Skyrim, Fallout 4, and Doom already offering VR support and Prey and Wolfenstein soon joining the group, it stands to reason that Elder Scrolls VI will be launched with VR support making.
3. Possibly a Prequel
Every game from Arena to Skyrim has appeared in chronological order. Elder Scrolls Online, however, is a prequel to the entire series.
Rumor has it that Elder Scrolls VI will also be a prequel, giving the player a chance to explore the thousands of years of lore and avoid the repetition that would happen by having players in areas previous games have taken place.
2. Vampire Invasion
If the previous rumor is false and the game continues the chronological trend of previous titles, the next likely rumor I came across was that of an Akaviri invasion.
This theory is based on lines of dialogue from Elder Scrolls: Morrowind by the priest Lloros Sarano. He is quoted as saying, "I've heard rumors that Akivari is making preparations to invade us again.
They are apparently only waiting for the Empire to collapse in Civil War or some other crisis. We'd certainly need a Hortator then — if we had one, maybe they could travel to Akaviri before the invasion and weaken or stop it."
Since the Dragonborn assassinated Emperor Titus Mede II, I would say the Empire is definitely in crisis.
1. Skyrim Grandma is confirmed as an NPC!
Finally some ACTUAL news! Popular YouTuber, Shirley Curry, better known as Skyrim Grandma, landed the NPC role after a fan petition to Bethesda.
In the Elder Scrolls 25th Anniversary video, Curry was featured saying, "This means a lot to me because I would be extremely happy to know that somebody else was playing with my character in a future Elder Scrolls game."
