While playing through Undertale, it’s inevitable that the bosses will become more difficult. To counter that, developing a skill in dodging bullet-hell is certainly helpful, but the game also provides means of making these fights easier: weapons. In this article, I will be sharing what these items are, how they work, and where you can find them.
1. Stick
The Stick is what the player will start off with when they first enter the game. Because of that, you don’t have to go out and look for it. With that benefit, however, there comes downsides, as this weapon applies no bonuses whatsoever. On top of that, it cannot be reequipped once replaced, so finding the next weapon is almost crucial.
2. Toy Knife
The Toy Knife is the first actual weapon you can find in the game. It is located in the balcony of the Ruins, which is to the right of the entrance of Toriel's house. It adds 3 to your attack, making it 300% more effective than the previously equipped stick. Similarly to the stick, the attack pattern is a single hit, meaning when choosing the Fight option, the player only has to account for one bar.
3. Tough Glove
Found in the beginning of Snowdin, the Tough Glove is the next progressive weapon of the game. It can be found either in the first Dimensional Box in the room just after Papyrus’ first appearance for free, or in the Snowdin shop for 50G. On a Genocide route, this price is eliminated. The Tough Glove adds 5 to your attack; 2 better than the previous Toy Knife. To attack with it, you will have to do a single slash as before, then mash your key for maximum damage.
4. Ballet Shoes
The Ballet Shoes are the next weapon following the Tough Glove, and can be found hidden in a bush in Waterfall to the left of the glowing water section, and hence is free. They add 7 points to your damage, which amounts to an additional 2 more than the Tough Glove. The attack pattern introduces more than one slash, having you time three instead.
5. Torn Notebook
The Torn Notebook is a peculiar weapon due to it’s stats, and therefore isn’t suggested for Genocide routes or Neutral runs that you plan on killing in especially late game. This is because it only adds 2 to your attack, which is marginally worse then the 7 that the ballet shoes grant. However, the Torn Notebook does give 6 extra points in i-frames, which could prove very useful when fighting trickier bosses. If you’re doing a Pacifist route, then the damage won’t matter to you, and will be a much more useful item then the Ballet Shoes. The Torn Notebook is sold by Gerson for 55G, and is also found in Waterfall. The attack pattern is similar to the ballet shoes, but only has two attacks instead of 3.
6. Burnt Pan
The Burnt Pan is a weapon found in Hotlands, tucked away on the left side in a steam panel room that rapidly switches between the two for free. It not only adds 10 points to your attack, but also returns 4 extra health when consuming a healing item, using 4 consecutive hits as an attack pattern.
7. Empty Gun
The Empty Gun is a weapon purchasable from Catty and Bratty to the right of the Mettaton Hotel entrance. It costs 350 on Pacifist and Neutral routes and is free on Genocide. It grants 12 points to your damage, but comes at a cost: when aiming the attack, you must land 4 very quick hits accurately or else your damage output will severely plummet. So if you’re a player who knows you won’t need healing much and can trust in your timing, then the Empty Gun is a good choice.
8. Worn Dagger
The worn Dagger is the Pacifist/Neutral counterpart to the Real Knife, and can be found in a box inside one of the rooms in New Home for free. It’s a single-hit attack granting 15 points in damage, and foreshadows its usefulness for the upcoming Flowey fight. Apart from its lack of additional buffs, this is arguably the best weapon to continue a Pacifist or Neutral route.
9. Real Knife
The Genocide counterpart to the Worn Dagger, the Real Knife is found in the exact same place. Giving a whopping 99 points to damage, it is the best weapon in all of Undertale, although unfortunately it proves very useless for the rest of the Genocide route as the only boss afterwards reveals a shocking counter to Undertale’s meta.
