Let’s kill some orks!
Total War: Warhammer is in the works, currently stated as “coming soon”. It is already on our watch list for best new Warhammer games in 2015. It especially cool to see a game set in the original Warhammer universe – even if the sci-fi world of Warhammer 40k had given us some amazing games. So, put down your chainswords and boltguns, it’s time for some good old-fashioned skull crushing.
But before you start reading, take a moment to watch the announcement trailer. It shows Warhammer just the way Warhammer should be:
I can't decide what looks the most exciting.
5. Four different factions
Dwarves battling goblins.
As of now, we know of four playable factions in Total War: Warhammer: the Empire, the Dwarves, the Undead and the Greenskins. Factions have always been part of Total War games, but, until now, the difference between them was minimal. This time around, the developer promises that each faction will have a vastly different playstyle. The Greenskins, for example, won’t have to focus so much on taxation, they’ll just pillage a town and move on. The Empire, on the other hand, will play more like a traditional Total War faction.
Here’s how the Empire looked in Warhammer: Mark of Chaos.
4. Heroes
Mannfred von Carstein.
Each faction in Total War: Warhammer will have heroes of its own. These can act as assets on the turn based map (like in previous games), or be attached to armies so they appear in battles. So far, we have seen Karl Franz of the Empire, along with his griffon, Deathclaw, Mannfred von Carsten of the Undead, and Grimgor Ironguard of the Greenskins, Apart from them, you can hire other heroes (such as Wizard Lords for the Empire) to fight and help you. These hirelings, however, can die in battle, whereas your main heroes cannot.
A Warhammer army is only as good as its leader. Dawn of War: Dark Crusade knew that.
3. Chaos
Tzeentch, God of Change.
Although not a playable faction, Chaos has been strongly hinted at in the trailer. Which is a good thing, because Warhammer is only Warhammer if there is some Chaos God working from the background. So far, it seems that this God will be Tzeentch, not the usual Korn (horns and hooves) we’ve seen in other games. This might be a good choice, because Tzeentch’s manipulation can probably be better integrated into Total War’s turn based formula.

2. Flying units and giant creatures
Dragons!
For the first time in Total War history, flying units will be available in battles. We have seen the Emperor’s griffon, Deathclaw, in action, as well as Mannfred von Cartstein’s undead dragon. Apart from them, the trailer shows us dragons in the Greenskin army. Besides flying units, Total War: Warhammer promises ogres, trolls, and other “big” creatures. Supposedly, these will take up more space (meaning, there will be less of them in a squad), but will be much stronger than regular soldiers. Here’s hoping that the guys from Creative Assembly can pull it off.
Here's hoping that the flying units will be better than in Dawn of War: Soulstorm.
1. Magic
Fried orks in 3, 2, 1...
Another thing Creative Assembly is doing for the first time: spells. Now, according to the devs, magic and spellcasting won’t be overused. You will have to choose carefully whether or not to use your spells – too late, and enemy may overrun your wizard, too soon, and all your fireball will do is scorch the whiskers of a charging boar. Along with flying units, magic is sure to freshen up the battles of Total War: Warhammer.
