Like the real world, most things on Final Fantasy XIV can be solved with money, you even need to at least use the current tier of crafted gear to start doing raids, which in turn will help you collect tomestones. So how do you earn Gil?
Most methods will require your Disciple of Hand (DoH) or Crafter classes, for some you even need to gear up. But spending time and money on your Crafters is an investment for the long run. A lot of money-making methods can be done with a leveled-up DoH class.
10. Craft Housing Items
We did the Ishgardian Restoration after the main story of the expansion. Finally, everyone’s efforts will be rewarded as we will soon be able to get a house in the cold region. With the Ishgard Housing announced to be released in the upcoming expansion, housing items will soon become in-demand.
This will mostly require a Carpenter class. To save up resources, you might also need intermediate materials such as varnish crafted by an Alchemist or ingot by a Blacksmith or Armorer. It is a good idea to have all your crafters leveled up to be prepared for anything.
This method requires Market Board research to know what sells (or will sell). You will also have to take some risks since the housing is not yet active.
Market Board research can be done through the following links:
If you don’t mind crafting for the long run, this is for you.
How Crafting Housing Items works:
- Level up your Crafters
- Gear them up (their gears are shared except for the primary and secondary weapons)
- There will most likely be a sudden surge of the prices when the housing district will be released so keep your eyes peeled on the announcements
- Some people cannot be bothered to craft their furniture and you will be taking advantage of that.
9. Craft Intermediate Materials
With the game currently quiet, it is hard to earn Gil through the normal means which is the Market Board. However, for those who have their crafters leveled up, this is an easy passive method that you can do with a macro while you watch Netflix on the side.
Above is a beginner’s guide to crafting, which will help any player understand how crafting works. Knowledge about crafting will save you money upon the release of new crafted gear, housing items, and minions. This will also give you
What are these intermediate materials that I’m talking about? For an instance, a Miner gets ores (primary material). Blacksmith and Armorers can craft those ores to get ingots (intermediate material). It’s the intermediate step before you obtain your desired item through crafting. Some skip this step by buying from the Market Board.
How Crafting Secondary Materials Works:
- Intermediate materials are needed in, for an instance, furniture crafting. Those who only have a Carpenter will need to buy your varnish.
- Although this requires time, you can craft multiple items with the help of macros (use https://ffxivteamcraft.com/search to generate one)
- This method requires analysis at first but is stable once you find a material that works for you
8. Desynthesis
Since you can make things in FFXIV with your crafters, you can also break things down and get materials. In Patch 5.2, changes to the desynthesis system have been made according to Patch Notes published by Lodestone:
- Desynthesis can no longer fail regardless of skill level
- The combined total level limit for desynthesis has been removed.
As a result of this change, desynthesis levels can no longer go down, and it is possible to level desynthesis to the maximum for all crafting classes. - When your desynthesis level is higher than that of the item you are desynthesizing, the number of items yielded is increased, and there is a chance to procure rare items.
- The leveling rate for desynthesis has been increased.
- The level cap for desynthesis has been increased from 450 to 460.
- The "Careful Desynthesis" parameter has been changed to "Desynthesis Skill Gain."
This parameter now affects the amount by which your desynthesis skill level increases when desynthesizing an item.
Desynthesis may sound intimidating with all the technicalities, but basically, the more you desynthesis, the greater your skill improves and eventually you get rarer items that you can sell or use to craft items for yourself.
This is a great way to get rid of Rare items used in the previous tier.
How Desynthesis Works:
- After leveling up a Disciple of the Hand class to level 30, access desynthesis after accomplishing the quest Gone to Pieces from Syntgoht (Ul’dah – Steps of Thal (X14, Y10).
- Desynthesizing weapons give ingots and crystals
- Desynthesis can be used for some fishes to obtain Allagan Gold Pieces. Platinum Fish can even yield Platinum Nugget
- Depending on the item, sell it to a merchant or through the Market Board
7. Tomestone Farming
Cannot be bothered to level your Crafters? You can still earn Gil through doing your daily duties through the Duty Finder as you earn Allagan Tomestone of Poetics (Poetics for short).
This is a passive way of earning Gil especially when your main class is a tank, which is usually the Adventurer in Need, granting bonus Gil in every run. You get to earn your Poetics and you’re given a bonus Gil for your efforts of being the tank/healer in the party. The Adventurer in Need varies on the instance, but most of the time it’s either of the two.
How Tomestone Farming Works:
- After earning enough Poetics, go to Idyllshire
- Talk to Bertana <Primal Gear Exchange> in Rowena’s Center for Cultural Promotion
- Exchange for any item you want based on your Market Board research. (You can follow the guide in the link above)
6. Grand Company
Have you ever wondered what the Grand Company is for aside from teaming you up with people who chose the same colors when in PvP mode? They can be a source of cordial used when gathering but you can also exchange your Grand Company Seals for something worth selling.
You can earn Grand Company Seals through the Hunting Log, Duty Roulette, FATEs, Grand Company Leves, and expert and provision missions. All these are the things you do to raise your class level so you accumulate seals over time.
How Grand Company Seals Exchange Work:
- Visit your Grand Company in the respective town
- Exchange your old gear for expert delivery
- Talk to the Quartermaster
- Exchange your seals for materiel or material, depending on your server’s economy
- Sell them on the Market Board
Alternatively, in the current patch, you can check out the material Black Cinnabar which is an ingredient for a levequest. This can also be obtained through seals exchange. More items will be available for exchange as you rise in rank in your Grand Company. As you exchange for seals, you will soon be able to apply for a promotion in your Grand Company.
5. Eureka Pagos
One of the relic weapons in the game is Eureka weapons, which never died down despite being old content due to its insane difficulty at first. Eureka Anemos, the first stage, is still difficult and may require a person to party with (alternatively, you could use your Red Mage which can do DPS and healing at the same time).
Note that in Eureka, you may have to use a different kind of potion. This method is good when you’ve unlocked Pagos or you have a lot of free time that you want to do Relic Weapons for glamour. The weapons you get have a good “glow”. For those interested, check out this guide on Reddit (https://www.reddit.com/r/ffxiv/comments/hed93l/the_way_to_eureka_in_52/)
How Eureka Pagos Works:
- In Eureka Pagos, you can do FATEs which will reward you with a mini-game of using a Lucky Carrot to pinpoint the location of a buried treasure coffer
- there are coffers of different colors (Bronze: 10,000 Gil, Silver: 25,000 Gil, Gold: 100,000 Gil)
4. Gardening
One of the miscellaneous activities you can do in FFXIV is gardening in your plot or Free Company plot. This is a long-term activity that will require something to be added to your daily tasks: tending to your garden.
Thavnarian Onion has a price of almost 90,000 Gil per unit in Tonberry, and it varies depending on your server. They are used in Chocobo breeding, which is an end-game hobby of people with a lot of Gil. So as a person in need of Gil, why not provide to their needs for food to feed their Chocobo?
For more information about gardening, check out https://www.ffxivgardening.com/cross-diagrams
How Gardening Works:
- In gardening, you can crossbreed seeds to obtain rare plants
- You can also crossbreed for minions
- This is where you will need Grade 3 Thanalan Topsoil that you can obtain with Poetics
3. Treasure Maps
If you have a Free Company that you get along with, you can ask them to do treasure maps with you which will give rare items that get a high selling price on the Market Board since these items are usually used to create glamour items.
If you’re trying to skimp on your expenses but want to look good in-game, you can also farm the materials yourself with your friends.
How Treasure Maps works:
- When gathering, Disciples of the Land (Gatherers) can obtain timeworn maps
- With the action Decipher, the treasure map will become a key item
- Following the treasure map, use Dig on the approximate location of the treasure
- Enemies will spawn around the treasure due to traps, which you must defeat within an allotted time
- Upon completion, you can examine the treasure chest and obtain items as well as EXP, Gil, and Allagan Tomestones. Gil and Tomestones will be split evenly through the party. Certain items may be available for lots.
2. Levequests
Another method DoH classes can do without Market Board research is doing levequests. Levequests are usually used to level up your characters, but in Crystarium they give a large amount of Gil per levequest you accomplish (while your rewards are still doubled when you submit HQ items).
It is recommended that you have the respective DoL for your class and chosen recipe to gather the ingredients, and have macros to click while you do something else. In this method, you will accomplish Tradecraft Levequests several times.
How Levequests work:
- Gather materials needed (it is recommended that you gather in bulk so that you can accept the levequest and submit it several times)
- Craft intermediate materials
- Craft final requested item
- Go to Crystalline Mean in Crystarium to Accept Levequest and Submit items
Taking the one in the video as an example, you can turn in 3 items per levequest which cost 6,000 Gil each. Since levequests are limited to 6 per day, you can earn 108,000 Gil each day.
1. Crafting Current-tier Battle Gear
If your Crafter is on level cap geared with complete materia, you can utilize that through making the latest tier of Battle or Crafting Gear. With a lot of players who took a break a few patches after the expansion, their return this Fall (the release of the next expansion) will make them need new gear. Along with those who want to gear their battle classes are those who wish to earn their own money and thus gear up their crafters.
God/Goddess of the Hand players will be able to take advantage of the markets again soon, and you can get an early start at this by preparing for the next few months. Rushing to gearing up your crafter and adding materia to your gear fast will only eat up all your Gil.
How Current-tier Battle Gear works:
- Currently, the market prices are down due to the current active players being mostly consisted of those who raid
- You can obtain cheaper prices of materials for crafted gear
- Keep crafted items in your inventory until a month or so before the expansion, when people are starting to prepare for the game again
