Heroes of the Storm Best Heroes Tier List (Strongest and Weakest Heroes Ranked)

Which characters are the strongest and which are the weakest?

S Tier: These heroes are strong enough to be a safe choice on any team. They’re so effective in their role that their flaws can mostly be ignored through good micro and macro play.

  • Johanna, Tank: 95/100
  • Lucio, Healer: 95/100
  • Junkrat, Ranged Assassin: 93/100
  • Blaze, Tank: 92/100

Johanna (S Tier)

Johanna, the best tank in the game
Blinding, whacking, and just plain surviving

Johanna takes the #1 spot because picking her first means you can be prepared for any situation the enemy team throws at you (at least, more than any other tank). She’s the Swiss Army Knife of frontline heroes, and with her damage output, you can’t afford to ignore her.

Her huge health pool and activatable Iron Skin on a low cooldown means she can go wherever she wants and last forever in team fights. A slow on her Punish, AoE peel on her Condemn, and AoE blind on her Shield Glare allow her to disrupt the enemy in multiple ways. And with talents that can bring cooldown reduction and extra damage from her abilities, there’s almost no problem a Johanna can’t solve.

What Makes Johanna S-Tier

  • High health pool
  • Ability to constantly give herself a shield with ‘Unstoppable’
  • Multiple options for crowd control
  • Several quest talents, including an infinitely scaling health recovery talent
  • An AoE blind with a cooldown reduction talent shuts down teams with an auto-attack focus
  • Both of her ultimate abilities are reliable for engage and disengage

Lucio (S Tier)

Lucio, dropping beats and saving allies
Utilizing the most underrated stat in the game: movement speed

It wouldn’t give enough credit to say Lucio is the best healer because of his passive AoE heal, it’s the movement speed he grants that makes him a unique asset. Whenever your tank decides to start a fight, Lucio strengthens that engage by propelling toward or away from the enemy at the drop of a hat. And yes, across just about all levels of play you can expect a Lucio to put up huge healing numbers.

Lucio’s abilities let him zoom around the battlefield with such agility that he’s really the only healer that can dive into enemies and get himself out again with little fuss. Utilizing the speed from Wall Ride and gap closing from Push Off means he can always be wherever he’s needed most. For ults, Sound Barrier is both easy to use and can turn a fight all by itself, while High Five can address those situations where the enemy is trying to blow up one teammate.

What Makes Lucio S-Tier

  • The utility of team-wide movement speed at your fingertips
  • Ability to safely dismount and harass enemies
  • Healing output gets even better into the late-game
  • Constant AoE healing forces the enemy to invest lots of resources in a small window
  • With High Five to address crowd control, there’s no team he doesn’t fit in

Junkrat (S Tier)

Junkrat, flying in his Rocket Ride
Good luck trying to pin down a skilled Junkrat player

Unlike most ranged assassins, it’s quite hard to punish Junkrat for his positioning while he’s dishing out long-range DPS. And considering he doesn’t have mana, he can keep up his damage for a long time. Even if he does position poorly, he has tools to keep the enemy away.

Both his Frag Launcher and basic attacks deal damage in an area, making him great against minion waves. Concussion Mine can both launch a misplaced foe into your team or under yourself to propel away from danger. And whenever the enemy team hears the roar of the RIP-Tire (while Junkrat isn’t even on their screen), they know to run for cover as the huge AoE explosion is incoming.

What makes Junkrat S-Tier

  • No mana so he can constantly be a nuisance to the enemy
  • Damage can be dealt reliably from a long way away
  • Concussion Mine can get him out of danger very quickly
  • Can safely siege structures by himself
  • Steel Trap can control the battlefield by warding off paths

Blaze (S Tier)

Blaze, spittin' hot fire
You can smell the scent of roasting enemies in the air

Not only does Blaze have the health pool of a main tank, but he also has enough wave clear and self-sustain to be played in the solo lane. And between his crowd control and Bunker Drop, he’s capable of thwarting an entire enemy team’s aggression.

Flame Stream and Oil Spill have obvious synergy by igniting, but they’re good enough by themselves to still use individually all the time. Jet Propulsion is one of the best engage tools in the game, throwing out a 1.25-second stun to all enemies near his first impact. Bunker Drop by itself can counter all kinds of enemy tools by just removing you (and any teammate that wants to) from the battlefield, spit fire damage, and return on whatever side of the impassable terrain you want.

What makes Blaze S-Tier

  • Super fast lane and camp clearing
  • One of the best engage tools in the game
  • An ult that saves allies, deals damage, and creates terrain
  • Has no weak matchups in the solo lane
  • Can both grant himself health and mitigate enemy damage in multiple forms
