15. Ju-on

Rika is sent to the house to care for the only survivor of the tragedy, an ill woman. Death finally consumes the ailing woman, and now Rika must investigate what happened in the house before the cure consumes her too. 

Takashi Shimizu’s Ju-On franchise consists of 13 films, 2 short films, a television series, one game, and novelizations written by Kei Ohishi.

14. The Grudge (2004)

The films remake centers around the house where Kayako was murdered by her jealous husband. It is said whoever witnesses the spirit will die and pass on the curse. An American family moves to Tokyo, where one by one, they are consumed by the curse, doomed to repeat the chain of events that plague the house.

Takashi Shimizu directed the remake of his own film.

13. The Changeling

John is a recent widow who starts his new life in an old mansion. Of course, there is a reason the place he vacates has been empty for over a decade. While in the house, John experiences strange phenomena. He investigates what happened in the house at the turn of the century. 

The Changeling is on Martin Scorsese’s top 11 list of scariest movies.

12. The Remains

A single and his family start over in a new town. The children are instantly drawn to items in the attic, which belonged to the original owners with a tragic past. Once the father starts seeing ghosts, he knows there’s only one solution–burn the items.

The Remains is based off the short film called Open House.

While he is there, Arthur experiences strange noises and sightings along the marsh. If that wasn’t reason enough to leave, maybe the woman who drives young children to their death is.

The couple celebrates new beginnings with their blended family by moving to a new home in New York, unaware of the murders taken place by a madman. The same voices which convinced that man to kill his family have now possessed Mr. Lutz. Will the family find out what curse has been brought upon them?

The father George Lutz sued his stepson when he was alive over disputes over what happened in that house.

9. Winchester

Heir to the Winchester Rifle Company, Sarah Winchester, is assessed for her mental health by the company after her husband’s death. Dr. Eric stays at the estate, and what he witnesses makes him question his own sanity. It’s a curse or a conspiracy, but they are haunted by people who have died by the Winchester rifles.

The real Winchester Mystery House in California is a part of the National Register of Historic Places.

8. The Echo

You never know how your neighbors will turn out when you move into a new place, and unfortunately for Bobby, they are a nightmare. He moves into his dead mother’s old place and overhears multiple disputes, but the thing is, no one has lived next door for years. Bobby tries to convince those around him that he’s not crazy, just in time to realize his apartment complex is haunted by angry spirits.

The film is a remake of the Filipino horror film Sigaw.

7. Crimson Peak

From an early age, Edith was warned about crimson peak by her mother’s disfigured ghost. Fate has a way of bringing her there despite the warning. After ghosts rise up through the red clay from which her new home sits, she discovers that her new husband has many secrets. 

Crimson Peak won Best Film at the 42nd Saturn Awards.

6. The Conjuring

The first thing you should look out for when buying a house is how the dog reacts to it. For the Perron family, their lives are about to change after there first few nights in their new farmhouse. A witch has cursed the land and anyone who takes ownership of the property. Good thing for them, Ed and Lorraine Warren are there to help them rid the malevolent spirit. 

Tony DeRosa-Grund wrote a treatment to film nearly two decades ago after hearing an interview tape Ed Warren played.

5. The Ward

Honestly, the worst place to be haunted by ghosts is at a psychiatric ward. No one believes that Kristin is being followed by something eerie. All she did was commit arson, it’s not like she’s crazy, or is she? One by one, the girls in the ward are attacked by an unseen force, and Kristin is determined to get to the bottom of things.

The film was shot at a real mental hospital in Spokane, Washington. 

4. Lights Out

Rebecca and her brother are living someone else’s nightmare. Every time the lights go out, the distorted figure of a woman grows closer with each flick of the light switch. Her presence talks to their mother and gets into the heads of anyone she haunts. Together, they must figure out how to end the spirits curse.

The film grossed over $148 million. Not bad for a couple who struggled on their move to Hollywood from Sweden.

3. The Ring

A cursed videotape circulates through a town, killing those who view it one week later. A reporter investigates these deaths and stumbles upon the origin of the curse. Unfortunately she has watched the tape, and must figure out how to stop her own death and end the curse.

Hans Zimmer composed the soundtrack to the film.

2. Deadline

Alice’s deadline to submit her screenplay is approaching. Her producer allows her to stay in a secluded Victorian home to clear her head, where Alice finds a bunch of videotapes documenting the horrific murder of the previous occupants. It isn’t long before she is haunted by those ghosts seeking justice for what happened.

Redbox had to pull the movie poster depicting Brittany Murphy lifeless in the bathtub, because it coincides with how she actually died.

1. One Missed Call (2003)

A curse passes on to the unsuspecting recipient of a mysterious phone call. If you pick up, or even listen to the message, the spirit will kill you. There is no escape, but Yumi is determined to rid herself of the curse after each of her friends die from the cursed phone calls.

The American remake holds a zero-percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
