Monster Hunter World is one of the best RPGs out there and is a very welcome change of pace if you’re used to Final Fantasy XV.
That sword could probably make dino stew in 1 swipe
Despite how large your weapon is, you’ll have to team up to take down some of the bigger bosses like this dragon
10. Ni Ko Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom
Ni Ko Kuni 2 gameplay
Do you want to slash a sword around like a mad-man while dressed in a fine suit and experiencing one of the most epic JRPG stories of our time?
Your objective is to spread your positive influence all over the world with the game’s innovative Kingdom Building feature - starting with a small area of land, you can recruit people to aid in your quests and eventually build up to a massive sprawling city.
You’ll appreciate the familiar yet brilliantly simple and super fun Kingdom Hearts-style hack-and-slash with a three-member party system. Despite the simplistic combat, the difficulty scales well as the game progresses, especially with boss battles - it’s easy to learn and challenging to master.
The Anime-style graphics are charming and beautiful. If being a super classy sword slashing dude with his own kingdom sounds appealing, it would be worth it to check out Ni Ko Kuni 2, and don’t worry about missing the first game as this one stands on its own.
You’re fighting someone named Mouse Captain? That’s totally a silent homage to the legendary Micky Mouse, the real star of Kingdom Hearts, from which Ni Ko Kuni 2’s excellent combat is inspired.
Kingdom Builder lets you build up a city from humble beginnings to a sprawling kingdom.
9. Berserk and the Band of the Hawk
Berserk and the Band of the Hawk gameplay
If the previous game on the list seems too clean-cut for you, you may prefer the ruthless bloody warfare in Berserk and the Band of the Hawk.
It’s based on a classical swords and staves hack and slash and the story doesn’t matter here: prepare to be acquainted with the blood of countless enemies after mercilessly ripping them apart with your humungous enchanted sword. Or you might prefer to burst the bodies of a thousand adversaries with fiery magical spells. In any case, expect lots of blood and destruction and wicked good fun.
You’ll mostly play as a bold warrior named Guts, aptly named due to the relentless torrents of blood and gore being splattered all around him.
There’s less depth to this one than some other RPGs (which is a good thing depending on your style): combat mainly uses just two buttons.
If you reminiscence about the classic game Gauntlet and want to use swords and magic to utterly decimate huge mobs of enemies on the battlefield, you’ll want to check out Berserk and the Band of the Hawk.
Mere moments before the kill counter went up a couple dozen points or so
The band of thieves all agreed - the leader is whoever is tallest. However, Guts’ sword is still bigger
8. The Elder Scrolls Online
The Elder Scrolls Online Gameplay
Calling all explorers: The Elder Scrolls Online has a huge open world ready for adventuring.
It’s first and foremost an MMORPG, so if you prefer questing solo you may look elsewhere. You can choose to play as a strong knight, a sly thief, a powerful mage, or some combination of all. Band up with the right people to quest through the game’s beautiful dungeons and take on a ton of otherworldly foes.
You can switch to a first-person view if you prefer to get up close and personal in your fights and it works especially well for stealth missions. The best part is crafting your own items, and the game has a robust and fun system for enchanting your weapons and combing herbs.
A wide variety of spells and weapons ensures you’ll never run out of creative ways to dispatch the demonic hordes
The dual axe-wielding inter-dimensional lizard person has only brief seconds to contemplate what that blue stuff does before his grisly demise
7. Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn
Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn gameplay
I couldn’t resist putting just one other Final Fantasy game on this list. If you like MMOs but you’re more into riding chocobos than horses, you’ll really enjoy Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn.
The game emphasizes player interaction and crafting items. You’ll be digging through a fair amount of menus, but any true RPG fan secretly loves that kind of stuff, and Square Enix has done a good job streamlining the menu system since its initial release.
You have great rewards-based incentive to cooperate with other players and aid them on their quests. The story is meaningful and gives great context to your questing. Combat works in a class and jobs system and is very familiar to any veteran MMORPG player. Switching your weapon can actually change your character class in real-time.
It’s atypical of the genre and fun to experiment with. I highly recommend Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn.
Riding an armored chocobo is as satisfying as can be
It wouldn’t be a fantasy RPG if at least one person didn’t have a tail
6. The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt
The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt Trailer
Quest through a super huge open world on a gallant steed or a lovely sailboat. The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt in one word is: epic.
You play as a magical bad ass searching for his long-lost love who goes around slashing and blowing up things in his path to reach his goal.
Like Fallout, your dialogue options and actions matter and will effect the game world. Prepare for an intense ride with deep combat mechanics system open to both casuals and hardcore players with lots of depth for min/max veterans. You can also hunt and get rewarded with several in-game perks.
The story is deep but it helps to read any of the books or play the previous entries in the series. There’s romance, intrigue, adventure, and epic fantasy combat. Overall, The Witcher 3 is a mature game for the seasoned RPG player.
Yes, you can shoot magical fire at bad guys, and yes, it is awesome
The user-friendly map system will help you navigate the massive open world
5. NieR: Automata
NieR: Automata gameplay
This game is crazy and unique among RPGs as a hack and slash and shooter hyrbrid. The post-apocalyptic art style is just enchanting if not eerie with a gorgeous soundtrack.
Nevermind the simple story: your mission is to find the truth in the most convoluted JRPG-style imaginable. However, the game rocks. You play as a sexy and scantily-clad ninja warrior with white hair.
The combat is very fast-paced and intense and super exciting with lots weapon types and opportunities for tactical combos in some fantastic high-tech environments, and you’ll also find yourself jumping around an abandoned amusement park.
NiER: Automata is just fun, high-octane, and suitable for the mature RPG gamer who wants to focus on combat and gameplay rather than story.
NieR: Automata has enough insanely-ridiculously-huge sword-wielding goodness to make Final Fantasy VII’s Cloud Strife feel bashful.
Wouldn’t be a futuristic JRPG without at least one mech soldier.
4. NIOH
NIOH Gameplay
Do you like Final Fantasy XIV and also Dark Souls? Then you have to play NIOH. You’re a foreigner in Japan who trained to be a super bad ass samurai necromancer.
Complete with Japanese samurai-style armor and katana, you can switch between different sword styles mid-combat to keep your tactics constantly on-point as you strategically take down your opponents. The feudal-era Japan settings are gorgeous and fun to explore.
If you’re a total masochist, like most Dark Souls players, you’ll love the optional Twilight missions. These are re-playable sections of the game, such as boss fights, with huge added difficulty.
Ah, a moments rest amidst the chaos of war. NIOH allows for a full range of awesome weapons including a bow, spear, hammer, and sword
Level up your samurai’s skills with the intuitive skill point system
3. Blade and Soul
Blade and Soul Gameplay
This game is all about going boom boom BLAM and making enemies explode in a soup of super powerful spells and critical hits. It’s a BIG MMO: You can fly around a gorgeous landscape and do basically anything you want.
The class variety is superb with class-combining elements - tank, healer, mage, warrior, and more are all pretty much combined while you slash and fireblast through lightning-fast battles. No more waiting around for a tank or healer: everyone can work together andn do it all in Blade and Soul, and it works out beautifully.
The combat is the best part about the game and it’s never a dull moment. Don’t forget the expansions and have fun cooperating with your friends as you take out the big bosses.
Make the practice dummy explode! Blade and Soul is not shy of making things explode
Work together with your allies to achieve your goals of making bad guys explode
2. Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor
Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor Gameplay
Yes, finally a great Lord of the Rings action RPG. Orcs will wish they had never been created as you go in effortlessly wiping out the dark horde.
In Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor, you’re a totally unstoppable powerhouse with a sword, dagger, and bow, and you can choose to go sneaky-stealth or Full Rambo as to your liking. You can even use mind control and make the orcs do your bidding.
The combat is fluid, with responsive controls. You fight in tons of awesome battles and you always feel powerful and in control amidst the chaos. During battle, reinforcements may come in to make the difficulty far more than you initially anticipated, but - unlike Dark Souls - the game never feels over-the-top difficult.
The flow of combat is visually stunning with tons of various animations
Stealth is often a smart choice…right before dropping in and going Full Rambo on the lot of em’
1) Black Desert Online
Black Desert Online Gameplay
If you think you’re a hardcore RPG veteran, you may be up to the challenge of Black Desert Online. This game is Final Fantasy XV combined with EVE Online.
Unlike other MMORPGs, there is no real incentive to reach end-game. You can totally go at your own pace while meeting or fighting people, going on side-quests, and exploring wherever you want on the quests you receive throughout the lands.
You’ll fight from horseback and the game includes a lot of PVP combat, so this is not for the faint of heart. While I would not recommend this for beginners, if you’re ready for a unique RPG, Black Desert Online is a fantastic option.
What’s the rush? The best part of any great MMO is fishing with friends
The on-screen map radar is a useful tool for spotting mobs and fighting quest givers
All these games will appeal to a Final Fantasy XV fan. It depends on your personal play style, and there’s something here for every RPG or MMORPG player. Whether you like hack and slash, or sorting through menus for an hour, or a mix of both, you couldn’t go wrong trying any game on this list.
