[Top 5] Warhammer 40k Best Combat Patrols That Are Worth It

warhammer 40k, 9th edition, tabletop, best army warhammer, combat patrol
A good way to start Warhammer 40k

Warhammer 40k is, without a doubt, an expensive hobby. Luckily, Games Workshop released boxes that offer value when building your first army, these sets are called Combat Patrols. This list explores the best Combat Patrols that will give you the most bang for your buck.

5. Adeptas Sororitas

Adeptas Sororitas Combat Patrol contains:

  • 1x Canoness
  • 1x Rhino
  • 1x Repentia Superior
  • 1x Penitent Engine
  • 3x Arco-flagellants
  • 4x Sisters Repentia
  • 5x Seraphim
  • 10x Battle Sisters

Starting off this list would have to be none other than the Imperium of Mankind’s nuns with guns.  The Adeptas Sororitas Combat Patrol box set has you covered with all your bolt and flamer weaponry needs. The Adeptas Sororitas is a top-tier army in 9th edition, and some people might be wondering which Sisters box set has the best value. This is the one to look out for. Containing your primary HQ and Troops units, the Cannonness and Battle Sisters Squad, respectively, it also has high-tier Sisters of Battle Units that are very competitive and useful in any aspect of the game: Repentias and Seraphym.

While it may have an awkward amount of models for some units like the Arco-Flagellants and the Repentia, you could easily alleviate this problem by purchasing another Combat Patrol box. With some sick conversion skills, you could turn your extra characters from the second box into other vital characters (Repentia Superior to a Dogmata). In summary, this box set is definitely an auto-take when you want to start building an Adeptas Sororitas army.

Sisters of Battle Combat Patrol Pros

  • Rhino in the box offers excellent value
  • Penitent Engines and Seraphims recently got point drops
  • Repentias are one of the best Sisters of Battle Units right now
  • Good Value in terms of money

  • Getting another Combat Patrol box is a must to fill awkward model counts (Arco-Flagellants and Repentia)
  • Models are mono-pose

4. Grey Knights

Grey Knights Combat Patrol contains:

  • 1x Librarian in Terminator Armour
  • 1x Nemesis Dreadknight, which can be built as a Grand Master in Nemesis Dreadknight
  • 5x Grey Knights Brotherhood Terminators, which can be built as Grey Knights Paladins
  • 5x Grey Knights Strike Squad Marines, which can be built as Interceptor Squad, Purifier Squad, or Purgation Squad Marines.

Next up is the enigmatic Grey Knights of the Imperium. The Grey Knights Combat Patrol has an outstanding model range. Every model kit the Grey Knights has, save the characters, is literally in the box. The Terminator squad in the box could be built as either Paladins or even characters such as Grandmasters, Apothecaries, and the like. The Strike squads could be built as Interceptor, Purifier, or even Purgation squads.

There’s no specific way to distinguish the difference between Interceptor squads from Purifier squads or Paladins from Terminator squads other than their loadout. You can mix and match your Grey Knights list effortlessly with good magnet work as well. Among many options in a box like this, a person starting to build the Imperium’s designated Daemon slayers should have no second thoughts about getting this Combat Patrol box.

Grey Knights Combat Patrol Pros

  • Multipart kits in the box offer flexible configurations
  • All models in the box are necessary for a Grey Knights army
  • Best Value when building a Grey Knights Army

  • Low model count

3. Genestealer Cults

Genestealer Cults Combat Patrol contains:

  • 1x Magus
  • 1x Goliath Rockgrinder, which can also be built as a Goliath Truck
  • 5x Aberrants
  • 5x Acolyte Hybrids, which can also be built as Hybrid Metamorphs
  • 20x Neophyte Hybrids

Hiding in the deepest, darkest corner of our Top 5 list is the Genestealer Cults. With a Combat Patrol box containing a whopping 32 miniatures, the Cult’s Combat Patrol could get you a lot of bang for your bucks. You have so many multipart models offering you countless options. With twenty Neophyte Hybrids, you are pretty much solved for your troops. The Acolyte Hybrids, which could also be built as Hybrid Metamorphs, are an excellent addition with how good they are on the tabletop, and Aberrants for support are welcome to join the fray. Rocking with the Goliath Rockgrinder, a fantastic model in itself, this box is undoubtedly one of the best Combat Patrols Games Workshop has produced. Rise and assume power in the name of the Four-Armed Emperor with the Genestealer Cults Combat Patrol Box.

Grey Knights Combat Patrol Pros

  • High model count
  • Best Value when building a Genestealer Cults Army
  • Acolyte Hybrids are a top-tier unit

2. Drukhari

Drukhari Combat Patrol contains:

  • 1x Archon
  • 10x Kabalite Warriors
  • 5x Incubi
  • 1x Ravager
  • 1x Raider

Striking from the webway, the Drukhari’s Combat Patrol Box comes in second. This box offers two anti-gravity vehicles: the Raider acting as a transport and the Ravager opting in as your army’s heavy support. The box also contains the recent plastic kit incubi, sleek and neat-looking models that are actually viable on the tabletop. Lastly, the Kabalites and Archon are exceptional units in their respective slots (Troops, HQ, respectively). Overall, every unit in this box is useful and necessary, and it’s highly recommended to get a second box when starting a brutal Dark Eldar army.

 Drukhari  Combat Patrol Pros

  • Two Vehicles
  • High value in terms of money
  • All units in the box are viable on the tabletop

  • A second Archon from a second box seems unappealing

1. Adeptus Custodes

Adeptus Custodes Combat Patrol contains:

  • 1x Shield Captain
  • 1x Vexilius Praetor
  • 3x Custodian Guard
  • 3x Vertus Praetors, one of which can be built as a Shield-Captain on Dawneagle Jetbike
  • 10x Sisters of Silence Prosecutors, which can also be built as Vigilators or Witchseekers
  • 2x Burning of Prospero transfer sheets, which include insignia for the Talons of the Emperor

Taking the top spot on this list undoubtedly are the gold-clad warriors of the Adeptus Custodes. This box is worth it. While most Combat Patrols could fill in around 500 to 600 points, this one could fill in over 800 points of Adeptus Custodes goodness. You could build all sorts of configurations with this set; getting a second box is a surefire way of getting you a competitive Adeptus Custodes list. Get some named characters, and you’re good to go. Vertus Praetors and Custodian Guards are necessities in a Custodes list, and it wouldn’t hurt to get more. It may contain too many sisters, but the other units' value gives this Combat Patrol box outstanding merit.

  • Could fill in over 800 Points
  • High value in terms of money
  • All units in the box are viable on the tabletop
  • Multipart kits in the box offer flexible configurations
