[Top 10] Minecraft Best Creature Mods That Are Fun
Minecraft is seen by many as a therapeutic game to get lost in - lovely music, delightful atmosphere of nature, light combat themes, and rhythmic mindlessness of mining, gathering, crafting, and building. Obviously, there are some higher stress moments in the game, like facing down a boss, getting cornered by skeletons, or falling into a pit of lava, but if none of those sound like your speed, luckily there’s still a lot to do that doesn’t involve imminent peril. One such activity is exploring the environment during daylight hours to discover the collection of peaceful - and often very cute - wildlife, possibly even taming and taking some of them home. After all, it’s extremely difficult to be stressed when you’re looking down at a tiny mushroom cow with an enormous square head. And sometimes, the base game collection isn’t enough! Here are 10 mods that add new creatures to Minecraft.
10. Pixelmon

Alright, what I’m about to say might get me crucified, but I think I have to admit this before we continue: I’ve never played a main line Pokemon game. I know, I know - tragic, right? Truth is, I simply never had access to the correct platforms to play them on. I was raised on Kingdom Hearts and Spyro, not Pokemon and Mario. However, whether you’re new to the world of Pokemon or an old pro, this mod is sure to bring some Nintendo spice into your endlessly customizable Minecraft world. Pixelmon introduces quests, battles, and new items, along with a massive quantity of wild Pokemon to encounter and domesticate. It’s been around a long time and is pretty popular, hence why I limited it to this spot on the list, but if you haven’t gotten a chance to try it for yourself yet, give this mod a download and hop into Minecraft to catch’em all!

9. Rats
Check out this mod: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wTmlYflNt4M
This mod is relatively simple in premise: what if Minecraft, but with rats? However, its execution was fascinating and thrilling enough to catch my eye. It’s not just Minecraft with rats, but it’s also Minecraft with the bubonic plague. Not expecting that twist, were you? Well, maybe you were, I can’t prove that you weren’t, but I know that I certainly wasn’t expecting it. Not only does it introduce wild and domestic rats - with plague-carrying variations - but it also introduces a few new items to lure, trap, and feed these rats, along with plague doctors to go along with the bubonic plague feature.

8. Alex’s Mobs
Check out this mod: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8_R0aK-wbs
Alex’s Mobs is another simple mod, but this one is, comparatively, massive. This mod introduces 57 new mobs to interact with, both real and imagined. Every mob has a purpose or provides a resource, as well as diversifying and enriching the environment overall. Some of the new creatures you might encounter include bears, elephants, tigers, and orcas - pictured above - as well as the fictional “Bone Serpent.”

7. Primitive Mobs
Check out this mod: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-9nkEIUw4vE
Primitive Mobs is a lot like Alex’s mobs in that it also adds a large variety of new wildlife to the game - without breaking Minecraft’s classic style and aesthetic. Despite adding fewer new mobs than Alex’s Mobs (25 in total, to be exact) I had to rank it higher for including a chameleon mob. Chameleons are my favorite animal, so I may have let my biases affect this ranking a bit… but I don’t care, it’s my list, and I make the rules! In addition to these entirely new mobs, it also introduces a couple new flavors of classic mobs, like the iconic creeper. But aside from the chameleons, I think my favorite addition has to be the haunted tool mob. What a creative idea for a new entity to encounter!

6. Better Animals Plus
Check out this mod: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7POTntPp9sk
Better Animals Plus contains 35 new mobs and counting. It does exactly what it sounds like it does: it makes your Minecraft animals better! This mob also comes with new blocks and armor to go along with the new creatures. Plus, the creator has a second mod called Whisperwoods that adds even more creatures with a more spooky theme, the link to which is included in the description section of Better Animals Plus’s download page.

5. Aquaculture 2
Check out this mod: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Flp5CSBdBuw
Aquaculture 2 widely expands Minecraft’s fishing system! I’m an enormous fan of aquariums and aquatic life, so the idea of getting to build one such fascinating place within the confines of my own Minecraft world is incredibly appealing to me. With more than 30 new fish to populate the tanks, including jellyfish, tuna, and arapaima, I’m excited to construct my own private aquarium to visit and gawk at. This mod also introduces customizable fishing poles and bait, bobbers, and lures to improve your fishing skills.

4. Upgrade Aquatic
Check out this mod: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HgnDqnnBIw
Upgrade Aquatic is yet another mod focused on improving Minecraft’s sealife, building on in-game concepts such as the coral reefs and swamps, adding new flora and fauna to encounter and collect amongst these watery environments. The new mods include a shark-like creature called the Thrasher, which uses echolocation to track down prey before thrashing any unlucky creature that happens to wind up snagged in its carnivorous maw.

3. Animania
Check out this mod: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSz6w2RzY8E
Animania takes the mobs you know and love and retextures them with more realistic proportions, color variations, breeds, and genders, along with programming in entirely new wildlife to play with. There are several add-on packs of mods that improve specific creatures all within a set theme, such as farm animals or domesticated animals like cats and dogs. One add-on includes hedgehogs, ferrets, hamsters, and amphibious animals like frogs. Animal care has also been widely upgraded. Now, to convince your animals to reproduce or to provide resources, you must keep them fed, watered, and entertained. This mod is an animal lover’s dream.

2. Twilight Forest
Check out this mod: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKAUzlDiUZM
The Twilight Forest mod has been around quite a long time, but it’s always being updated, so it always stays fresh. In the same vein as the classic Aether mod, this mod introduces an entirely new plane of reality, accessible via a portal constructed out of grass, flowers and water. This portal takes you to the titular Twilight Forest, a unique biome featuring towering trees and mysterious new mobs to encounter, some friendly, and some… not. This realm includes new boss battles, dungeons, items, and loot, so there’s plenty to explore and discover!

1. Ice and Fire
Check out this mod: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWQJumnsHo0
The Ice and Fire mod has been discussed briefly in my research for this article, and they always speak exclusively of the dragons this mod introduces. Don’t get me wrong, it makes sense - the massive flying reptiles are what the mod is named and known for! They come in three varieties: ice, fire, and lightning, each demonstrating unique behavioral patterns and hunting techniques.. but I consider it a bit unfair not to mention the many other incredible features introduced by this mod, including hippogryphs, pixies, sirens, and trolls. This mod turns your game into a complex and diverse fantasy world filled with these extraordinary creatures.

Wow! The inner child in me that grew up dreaming of being a veterinarian or a marine biologist is thrilled by these ten mod finds. I can’t wait to hop into Minecraft and build an enormous zoo, featuring everything from deer to dread liches. Have you played any of these mods before? Let us know in the comments if you agree with my rankings. We’ll see you guys around! Happy gaming!
