16. Vikings: Wolves of Midgard

Vikings: Wolves of Midgard gameplay from the start of the game

Vikings: Wolves of Midgard is an isometric top-down action RPG in the same vain as the Diablo franchise and Path of Exile.

You play as the chieftain of the fierce clan of Ulfung – the Wolves of Midgard. As one of the few survivors of Ragnarök you will battle ferocious creatures, menacing demons and of course, the apocalyptic Frost and Fire Giants.

Level up your character and your gear with new loot, experience points and special gems and amulets.

Paint the battlefield red with the blood of your enemies using satisfying and incredible looking spells and abilities, and explore the worlds of Midgar, Jotunheim, Muspelheim, and more.

The developer (Games Farm) say they put a lot of work into the environment in this game, and it shows. Every village, rocky mountain, or dark and damp cave feels alive, authentic and beautiful It easily rivals other entries in the action-RPG genera.

You can use a multitude of playstyles in this game, from calling down lighting with the aid of Thor, to shooting arrows from affar, or swinging axes up close. Of course, we prefer swinging axes up close, it is a Viking game after all.

While the core experience is form a tactical birds eye view, interested voyurs can zoom the game in and pan the camera down to capture the nitty-gritty of each battle, much like you might in a Total War game.The Avatars don't just look cool and kill your enemies, they alse tear through buildings and strongholds like butter, completely decimating the enemies hard built fortress.Eitr switches things up once in a while, but diverging from the top down view the game usually presents nad going into a more classical third side scrolling/birds eye view.The grid based battlefield is easily readable and does a great job in helping you distinguish between your own characters and the enemy. True to Ubisofts pedigree, For Honor is a visual masterpiece, here you see two warriors from vastly different cultures squaring of in glorius high fidelity.One of the many bosses of the game, Gaia is a colossus being that pre-dates the gods of Odin and Thor. It's quite the spectacle to fight her.It's not just building villages and hunting wildlife, you'll also have to battle rival clans. Here you see a skirmish between two different player settlements unfold.Little is known of the game so far, and we've mostly seen alpha footage, but as you can see from this screenshot, it looks very promising...and very viking.Skyrim needs little introduction, but on so much has changed with the game over the years that it's easy to forget just how good it looked even in it's first iteration all those years ago.The character design of The Banner Saga deserves all the praise we can give it, every sceen is filled with details that tell a story and pulls the player further into the narrative.Here you see the squad unwinding after a long day of slaying with a traditional Norse feast, they even invite some of their former enemies over for a snack.Much like games like Diablo, in Vikings you'll face off against smaller swarm type enemies and large meat shields that pose a greater challange, this Fire giant took a while to bring down, but the reward was worth it.As far as old school action games go, nothing gets more classic than dropping down on an enemy and stomping on their head, add a penetrating thrust from a sword into the mix and the blood and guts go spilling.
